About Hikki
Quote:

Spoiler:
Utada Hikaru (宇多田ヒカル) is a Japanese pop singer-songwriter under the Emi Music Japan label. Utada is one of Japan's most successful artists of all time. Her debut album First Love is the #1 best selling album in Asian music history with over 7.65 million copies sold in Japan alone. In total she has sold over 38,000,000 million records in Japan, and 3 of her albums are in the Top 10 best-selling albums of all time in Japan (#1, #4, #8), making her one of the most successful and popular singers in J-pop history. Utada is bilingual as she was raised in both New York and Tokyo. She is also known in the west under her English language project name 'Utada', most famous for singing the Kingdom Hearts theme song, "Hikari / Simple And Clean" and the Kingdom Hearts II theme song, "Passion / Sanctuary". Initially, Utada's music had a heavy R&B style to it, but later her music progressed to a more pop / experimental tone. Her distinct R&B sound brought her much attention with her first release in Japan, "Automatic / time will tell". Utada was married to director Kiriya Kazuaki, who directed the movie CASSHERN, but in March 2007 the couple split.

On August 9, 2010, Utada announced plans to go on indefinite hiatus following the release of "Utada Hikaru SINGLE COLLECTION VOL.2", her second compilation album. On November 24, 2010, "Utada Hikaru SINGLE COLLECTION VOL.2" was released. It debuted atop the Oricon charts once again. It has also been anounced that Utada has severed ties with Island Def Jam, who releases her English language works. She has secured a global contract with EMI Music. Upon returning from her hiatus, all her future releases will be under the name Utada Hikaru regardless of the country of release.

Utada Hikaru has been deemed the Most Influential Japanese Artist of the past decade (2000-2010) by Japan Times.

I just needed a place to say that BAD Mode may be her best album yet and that after revisiting Exodus and TITO I still love her English work and miss her horny tracks.

Has anyone been able to listen back to their Zane Lowe interview? I'm in the UK and it doesn't appear on the Apple Music app for me (I'm not a subscriber) but I can see later shows. Thanks in advance!

I've created a month-free trial to listen to it and forgot to do it completely haha

Been obsessing over the new album so much. I wasn't expecting to get so emotional during 'Kibun Ja Nai no (Not In The Mood)' every time I listen to it, especially at the end when Hikki sings the end section "Hey how are you"... followed by her son. What an unexpected touch to that song.

Definitely a favorite on the album, but I utterly love "Find Love" and it's probably my #1 off the album right now.

Honestly it was a pleasant surprise to see this album selling over 90K. I was expecting around 60K since it was released digitally a month ahead.

I don't think I'm really in love with the album... Bad Mode is still the only album song I really like (I just can't get into the other three). However, I have been hooking onto PINK BLOOD and Face My Fear for the past month, though I prefer the single version of FMF. I just don't like how hikki took on softer approach in the album version. As a whole I think this album is better than Hatsukoi, but I prefer the concept of Hatsukoi more.

Katsuyuki012 15th April 2022 10:09 PM

^I had hoped she'd get 100k first week but it's a very solid number!

In other news Hikki is going to perform at Coachella this Saturday!

https://twitter.com/88rising/status/...--HI4Krow&s=19

https://twitter.com/88rising/status/...PCm5jIQWQ&s=19

Apparently there's gonna be 8 artists in 80 minutes, so Hikki will probably do two songs. I'd love for them to perform Find Love.
Also, some fans have speculated that Hikki might perform sth with Jackson Wang, since she started following him recently. Could simply be due to appearing at the same event and nothing more, who knows.

I'm shocked but also super happy! :)

Hikki's tweet: https://twitter.com/utadahikaru/stat...iusn42UYQ&s=19

Katsuyuki012 17th April 2022 05:58 AM

Hikki's setlist (it was basically a ten-minute medley):

1. Simple And Clean
2. First Love
3. Face My Fears
4. Automatic

It was very nice! :heart Hikki was clearly nervous & the stream had some sound issues but it got better as the performance progressed. Hikki also seemed a lot more relaxed during Automatic (my personal favourite of the night). Still can't believe this actually happened.

I wish they had sung Find Love but god, seeing her on that stage felt wonderful. She really deserves it! :love
Apparently, they will perform next week, too, so I'm really looking forward to that.

Lastly, this is completely off-topic BUT
Spoiler:
THERE WAS A 2NE1 REUNION AT COACHELLA!

UPDATE: HIKKI JUST PREMIERED A NEW SONG!!!

DeepRiver 17th April 2022 02:44 PM

The new Song is amazing. Her Performance was cool but she was so nervous. ;)

Katsuyuki012 17th April 2022 03:25 PM

^Agreed! She was a lot better by the time she started singing Automatic, tho! Some non-fans made some harsh comments about the vocal but most seem to realize it was the nerves and that it got better (+ Hikki just struggles more with these really high notes). Hikki isn't the best live performer by any means but Automatic showed she's a lot better than what the S&C performance would lead one to believe.

I'm really liking the new song! :love
I'm also glad that Hikki has been getting quite a lot of attention (they even trended in the US), as I kind of expected them to go a bit 'unnoticed', but thankfully that's not the case! There are tons of tweets about them that have thousands of likes.
Get that promo, Godtada! :)

visionfactory 18th April 2022 05:06 AM

I loved Automatic, rest of songs were messy

I Love how people write „they“ and „she\her“ in the same sentence lol

Did she perform at Coachella in this weekend? She was trending on Twitter last weekend and I was surprised she was there.

^She didn't.

This is part of the BAD Mode packaging, yeah! The album box had the same thing.

I've been looping the Live Sessions audio a lot since it dropped officially. Absolutely gorgeous.

Wow, that's a beautiful collection! Very tempted by the vinyls but I think they'll just sit around collecting dust. Perhaps I will just order one of my favourite album. If only I could decide what my favourite album is... :bgiggle

BAD Mode has been in solid rotation here. Took me a while to get into it because I had been listening to many of its previously released singles so much already, I found it difficult to experience it as an album rather than a bunch of semi-recent and new tracks slapped together on a disc. Less of an issue now though, I really like it.

Amazon has them all up for preorder, to be released 12th of August.

Amazon.com unfortunately - not sighted anywhere local yet for me, so that would add hefty shipping and VAT fees.

can't wait for "traveling" pv, the one in vevo so bad in quality.

mi|kshake 21st March 2024 10:35 PM

OMG yes can't wait for Travelling! And the Deep River & Ultra Blue era PVs!

Automatic is also...not one of my faves! That text!!

emi♡ 23rd March 2024 05:19 PM

Y'all. I have been dying for 10 years to have Passion in high definition I can't wait omg :luv2

bluegie 28th March 2024 12:18 AM

I'm really happy that she released 4K videos. Strangely tho she omitted FOL and Goodbye Happiness (she did include Sakura Nagashi). Also I wish she would also release 4K of the recent videos. Her latest one (Naniiro Demonai Hana) is so beautiful...

Edit: I realized she did include FOL. And also I just realized that how small number of pvs she has lol. The number of Japanese pvs before her haitus was... 25 right? (Automatic, time will tell, Movin' on, First Love, ATY, W&S, For You, Time Limit, CYKAS?, FD, traveling, Hikari, SD, DR, COLORS, Dareka, BML, Passion, Keep Tryin', Boku wa Kuma, FOL, BW, HS, POL, Goodbye Happiness).

And after during and haitus... Sakura Nagashi, Hantaba, Nijikan, Forevermore, Anata, Hatsukoi, Time, OLK, PINK BLOOD, Kimi, BAD mode, Gold, Naniirodemonai Hana. 13, not bad...

Maybe ayu released so many pvs throughout her career, so compared to her, hikki's collection seems so minimal lol....

mi|kshake 3rd April 2024 10:14 PM

OMG the Deep River & Ultra Blue PVs are tiny! :(

KLJames 9th April 2024 05:47 PM

I hate that they turned all pvs into 4:3 format. Why did they do that? The original ones were 16:9...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA I read this and had to run and listen to it and IT DOES SOUND LIKE DONKEY KONG MUSIC I'm really laughing!!!

Love it tho!! very underwater stage! :D:D:D:D

bluegie 10th April 2024 12:19 AM

Oh yeah it does sound like underwater stage as well lol.

I actually like re-recordings (probably except ATY). She managed to give modern vibes to Hikari and traveling. Gotta listen to those 202X Mixes and see if they do good or bad to those classics :).

voltron 10th April 2024 04:20 PM

While I appreciate new takes on material in general, Deep River is a masterpiece of an album and I'd really like for her to not touch and ruin anything else from it. The new version of Traveling is...not good. Ultra Blue and Heart Station are full of duds she can mess with as much as she'd like.

Edit: Listening to the album, the new mixes are fine. But the re-recordings are a no. Hikari is also...rough.

brener 10th April 2024 05:23 PM

Debuted with over 100k copies on Oricon Daily Albums :blove

i actually enjoyed very much the new versions, i believe it doesnt ruin the old material, and you can still listen to the old ones ^^

thinkingoutloud89 11th April 2024 02:21 PM

I'm not the biggest Utada Stan. It took my a lot of time to get into their discography and it was a slow process to find a liking to everything they put out, that said rewatching the TVs I came to a realization that I already had some time ago: Utadas Music, whille always a testament to its time and Utadas personal circumstances, never sounds outdated like a lot of their peers music. Utadas discography is also one of the few enigmas in the J-Pop landscape, putting out rather crafted bodies of work with only a very few overall (compared to the average "female" J-Pop singer).

SCIENCE FICTION is what it is, a rather bland Best-of like the last few Single Collections. Utadas music never was fancy for the most part and I guess that's what the charm is (and the reason for what I stated above).

I do think the new mixes are superior to its originals. The sound quality is so good. These new versions just made me realize how much of Utadas vocals are muffled in its original and the addition of new instruments (or maybe just a polish of what was there?!) really makes them fuller.

As for the re-recordings: they are exactly what I would expect from a "2024" Version of those songs, and for that matter they are rather clever. Compared to Namies rerecordings or even Taylor Swifts, who are just vocally updated versions of their originals, Utadas are more of a self-cover. If we never knew these songs, we wouldn''t question them at all.

For that matter I can't share the sentiment of "ruining" older works. Firstly, those are Utadas Songs, and if they don't feel consent with those versions anymore, they are free to alter them to their liking. It is, as a matter of fact, what most artist do during live shows if they have an extended career anyways. Other than that tho, they are not taking away your memories with the originals. Especially in our day and age, where music is this readily available, you are free to chose what to listen to - and in this case which version.

I enjoy the updated version of traveling a lot. Do I think it's better than its original? - probably not. But I like the freshness of it and it brings me new memories I enjoy.

voltron 11th April 2024 05:12 PM

Yes, I'm well aware that the original versions will always be there for me to enjoy. My hope is that these new and lackluster versions don't become a staple for them. Personally, I find that they take away from the greatness of the original works instead of add something new. It's not that I ever expected they would be better than the original, but I feel like they don't add anything worthwhile - and I think their vocals sound really rough. Particularly in Hikari there are parts where they could've benefitted from changing the key or doing something more drastically different. Not to make an Ayu x Hikki "competition," but I think of the 10th anniversary re-recordings - while I don't like them better than the originals, they added some new color and flavor that I can appreciate as their own thing. I just wish the Hikki songs did the same for me.

Obviously most everyone here disagrees and really likes them, and I think that's great for you all. For me, it's just disappointing. Maybe "ruin" is being taken too literally when I say it, and again I do appreciate the idea behind it all, the execution just feels poor and unnecessary.

Hmm I don't see why it should add something, as enhancing the song is not the main goal. Something I already pointed out. It is simply a different version. traveling has updated vocals and a fresh sound, which I fairly enjoy. Hikari is like a different remix, not even really comparable to the original and it shouldn't be, since it is a version its its own. I also enjoy this new take for what it is and it certainly is what you call "a new color and flavor" that you simply don't seem to enjoy. Which is also okay, but it does not take away from the fact that it is exactly what you seek. Lastly I don't think they are "poor" since this album is sonically one of the strongest Utada albums, as everything sounds polished and clear.
