I have a question.. does Ayu smoke? I never saw her smoking or anything, but i never say "making of" or in backstage.. does anyone ever saw her smoking?

i dont think she smokes, but there was a picture lookin like she did, even if she smokes i dont mind its her life!

EDIT: regarding Mariko's link: after looking at the pictures nick provided and watching the video, I really dont think that she is smoking in there, she was coughing and had her hand near her mouth. and the claim that the guy handed her a cigarette is probably not true, because a few seconds before the "handoff" of the cigarette, he was clapping with nothing in his hands. and it didnt look like he grabed anything within the short amount of time before ayu passed in front of him. the pictures after just show her hands near her mouth, and her thumb was probably mistaken for a cigarette. i dont wanna make a too big of a deal out of this, but i just wanted to clarify the subject of ayu's "smoking"

It looks like gum or something because when it goes in her mouth, you can see she seems to bite down on it- Her head moves down. I don't know.. :think

thank you all of you for making this situation clearer.. it seems that there's a kind of tension here lol please dont get angry if she does smoke.. however, a singer must take care of her-his voice so she shouldn't smoke, in the more probably case.

I wouldn't really like Ayu smoking, because she's still very young, and smoking of course is bad for your health- she has a great voice to take care of. But if she does smoke, it's part of her personal life, and we as fans should still appreciate her for the great artist she is no matter what. This is a good topic, tho as long as people don't start arguing ^^;

lol I was kind of just aiming towards her smoking, not any nude photobook. O_o; :laugh But I agree, I definately wouldn't want to see that. It would just change a lot of my views on her. (Not trying to be funny here!) I believe Ayu doesn't have to go that far, and I don't think she would. That could probably put her career at risk. I think she's sure of what she can and can't do. But going offtopic here ^^; I don't think Ayu smokes. She has to take care of herself, and if she does smoke, she's probably not puffing frequently like a chimney or something. A lot of people/artists/whoever smoke :shrug

I agree with all you last post, mariko, but with this sentence in particulary. I think that she (ayu) MUST be very moral because so much people look at her and, as i know a lot of girls imit her for clothing and all.. so she need to keep on morality. If she doesnt, she will lost a lot of fans (me!!)

I agree with you .. it frankly doesn't matter if she does or doesn't ... health risks are present if she does, but it's her life ... if she smokes it's kept in her private life ... not in her public life .. to which we all know.

as for this making of gif ... she was coughing because she couldn't breathe .. I have the video ... it's easy to see. So she's not smoking in this clip.

I remember seeing a picture of her on the second disc of the LOVEppears album. She was holding something in her hand that looked definitely like a cigarette to me. Her mannerism, too, yelled HOLDING A CIGARETTE to me. But, on further review and watching A STORY OF VIDEO CLIPS (part of the Hamasaki Ayumi PV collection), it was actually just a metal butterfly clip that she was using as a prop. How strange! But I was glad to see that she wasn't smoking. I doubt ayu smokes because I've never seen her light up behind the scenes, even when others are. ^^ But, it's just my opinion. I wouldn't be shocked if she did.

Smoking is a health risk, definitely, especially for a singer, like her. Therefore, I really don't think she does. There've been other rumors about her before that were so crazy and out there that turned out to be false, and I bet this is gonna turn out to be one of them.

Sure, it LOOKS questionable, but it doesn't mean that the statement is actually true. People twist things out of proportion, many times celebrities get stuck in a bunch of tabloid-esque situations, or find themselves in some scandal, only for the public to find out it was just some stupid story. Anyway, in the clip it looks like.. gum or something. *squints* It's so fast, but it doesn't look like a cig or anything.

We should give Ayu the benefit of the doubt. :)

It does look like a cigarette but the way she holds it doesn't look right though. People who say they don't care if she smoke are quite "fake" IMO, I don't know but I don't really like to see her smoking because it's the dumbest thing to do beside suicide. How about someone now say Ayu do drugs and here comes these "rational" fans who say "oh it's her personal life I don't give a damn!", that's just doesn't make sense if you love her so much. Blah...why does it matter if she smokes? Sure it's bad for her health and voice, but a lot of things are! I mean...A LOT of things are bad for you and it's not like smoking is just going to cause her to fall over dead in 10 years. She lives her own life, just like we live all of ours and just because she is a celebrity doesn't mean we can all sit around and grumble and hold her to this god-like standard that no one can live up to. I love Ayumi and all, but she's not some sort of Heaven-Sent Perfect Goddess who can do no wrong. She's human.

on a diff forum i read that ayu smokes indeed, some of her fans there where really going mad because she did that and even started to compare her with britney spears >.< anyways, imho she can do whatever she wanna do, if she smokes that's really ok with me, i'm not going to like her less because of that... even better, i'm going to like her even more because then she is showing that she is human :D

Erm ... people, well, I don't know. I believe that yar, it's Ayumi's choice. But I do feel that she doesn't smoke, it's a gut feel, because yar, she's singer and I'm sure Avex would not allow their singers to smoke. It's for their interest.

Regarding the other incident about Ayu smoking, well, I suppose she was too drunk, hence she just picked the cigarette up. But I don't know, if you want to say that smoking has resulted in her voice getting more and more rough and worse ... well, I seriously don't think so ...

Yar, I was refering to that picture. Hehe, but yar, I agree that Ayu makes her own decisions about her life. As much as we would like to see her not smoking, well, if she decides to do so (which is actually still under speculation on whether she REALLY smokes), I mean even though we really hope she changes, I think there's really nothing we can do about it.

But I mean yar, it might be quite disappointing for some of us, but I believe that Ayu knows what's best for herself too. She might be trying to quit, who knows. Or maybe she doesn't even smoke at all? Well, anyway, just try to take it with a more open mindset. :)

Anyway, ayu can always be a casual smoker. Those people who just smoke when they're drinking, if it's true and she drinks really moderately, on special occasions, then her smoking will surely have less repercussions than if she's a regular smoker.

Even if Ayumi's smoking..so what? Really...The only thing in my head if she smokes now is her health and voice. T_T I hope she doesn't get sick.. But I think she does.. But there's nothing wrong with it besides you're slowly dissolving your insides as you smoke on at a time. =)

It truly is Ayu's choice, however maybe despite the risks *even i know the risks and i smoke too* she wanted to.
- it help stop stress. lets face it, she must get very stressed being so famous! and so busy!
- also to make her voice less squeaky?! maybe?
- to retain her slim figure, lets not forget ayumi is not so young now and it is not so easy to say slim.

isn't smoking EXTREMELY popular in japan? i mean all of Laruku's members smoke right? i thought it was like cool or something...yuck...i wouldn't smoke...but i love the smell of cigars, not cigarettes, cigars...for some reason whenever i say that, someone always has to say "you like cigarettes? I don't believe ayu smokes.. In the Real Me making-of screenshot someone posted the white thing is a pen. It can't be a cigarette because there's no smoke, and it doesn't look like a cigarette. And I doubt that she would smoke in such a place.

The second pic with the cigar.. Well that's just a made-up photo, not a real life situation. Anyhow, if she does smoke, i believe she does it rarely.

If I were to side on if I thought if Ayu smoked or not, I would say she does not. The picture of her looking like she's holding a cigarette, does not look like one. I remember someone saying that there was an image of her smoking in the making of Real me, but I didn't see it at all. If she smokes, I would guess she smokes very little. Smoking is the leading cause of death (among Americans, I want to say, but am unsure), even more than alcohol, suicide, fire, AIDS, illegal drugs, and other things.

We'd probably have to ask Ayu to know if she smokes for sure, lol. She's a smart girl IMO, and I don't think she's a heavy smoker (if she smokes at all). I remember a picture from the making of CAROLS and people thinking she was holding a cigarette, but it was lip gloss.

That picture of her with a cigar just looks like a poster. Just looks like a grown "male" look. Note the mustache. :P I also recall people saying her voice totally changed when A BALLADS was released, but that could've been something totally different.

Eh;; about ayu smoking.. I really don't think she'd be able to keep singing/working the way that she does. Not like her voice would just change, but her look would generally.. show it. You know? ayu does smoke. It's been published in a chinese tabloid paper that she was smoking in a pub and hurling vulgarities at someone. However, I have long since deleted away the picture, so I can't show you the evidence. I'm sure someone here may have it, so I just hope that person comes along and upload the picture.

Yes Ayu smokes and so do most Asian singers. I think Ayu smokes privately though like when she is out drinking with her friends. She probably thinks smoking in front of people is rude and she dislikes rude people. You don't see her smoke in the Area Tours or w.e. because that is her "work" and not her "free time."

Er... chinese tabloids are really not the first "evidence" you should be trusting. They always write false stuff and write things that are exaggerated just so more people will buy their newspaper...

Wasn't there photos in tabloids a while back of Ayu in a club with some friends and she was clearly smoking and drinking, and then Ayu confirmed that that was her? So she does smoke, most likely socially. Here's the link to the thread:

First page has scans and the last page has more scans with confirmation with a message posted at TA BBS. So it seems Ayu does smoke, at least socially.

Just to diffuse some assumptions about smoking...
- just because you're a singer doesn't mean you can't or won't smoke. I know an opera singer who smokes and I can guarantee that kind of singing is more difficult than anything Ayumi has done
- for emilytogawa: From what I understand, all the Laruku members except Tetsu smoke. Hyde is supposedly trying to smoke less but not quit.
- Japan doesn't have the same smoking bans as America, so it's not exactly "rude" to smoke in a public place (I mean, you can smoke inside the airports)
- there's nothing 'wrong' with smoking, even though it is very unhealthy. It's a bad habit but it doesn't make anyone less intelligent for doing it. It's also an addiction, so for some people, kicking the habit is very hard.

The board is split on whether or not Ayumi smokes but if she did, would you like her any less because of it? I'm sure we all have friends and relatives who smoke but it's their choice, not yours.

haha. Of course, we shouldn't be concerned about it, unless her vocals suffer from smoking. I believe it doesn't. In Japan, many artistes smoke, for example Hyde of L'arc~en~ciel

*sigh* i dont kow what to beleive...her voice has gotten a little deeper...and girls' voices dont change like that...but anyway, i dont worry about her getting hurt from smoking. im more worried about her and millions of other people in Asia dying from trunamis and earthquakes....they seem to be getting more plentiful and worse.
