3" CDS discs?
Can somebody please tell me what is a 3" disc (eg poker face, trust, you) and wot is the point of them???? :eyebrow
|
They're just like regular CDs, just a bit smaller. You guessed it, 3''. There's not really a point in them, they just look nice. Of course they can't contain 74 minutes, if I'm correct it's 21 minutes/185 Mb that fits on.
|
so they play in normal cd players?
|
I think they do play in most CD players, if not all. If you check out your CD player you'll see there's a spare part in the middle of the CD drawer, which lies just a lower than the rest of it. That's where 3'' CDs go. I'm not sure whether they play on every CD player out there. It's said to be impossible to play them in car-CD-players. I wouldn't know, I haven't tried it. But last time I played 3'' discs on my regular CD player, they worked just fine.

ahhh kool i see the line there hehe thanx dude :D
|
Np :yes
|
japanese singles used to have that "snap-pack" format, but now maxi cds have become regular
|
when did it change?
|
interesting
i never know all this |

As you probably know, nowadays, the 'normal' format is mainly used. You don't come across those 3'' discs very often anymore, except in the experimental music area, where deviant formats are quite common. (which makes those deviant formats normal altogether if you consider it that way, but that's not the point here, and a different discussion on its own). |
Itīs sad that this format does no longer exsist.
I like those 3" singles. Have 3 from ayu and one from Namie. |
It still does exist, it just isn't commonly used anymore. You can actually get CD-Rs in that format as well.
|
Yes, but thatīs not the same.
i loved the Package of this Cds. |
i guess the packaging is kind of interesting, but 4 storage purposes they kind of sucked :p along with [the other side] series...
and the fact that theres a limit of like 20minutes on them... |
i think ayu is the one that changed the whole 3" cd single to the normal single cd's because she is the one that introduced maxi singles which has to be normal size cd's and made it so popular...all singles used to be 3" cd before that (which is like before 98'?)
|
i miss them, kind of convienient actually, didnt take up too much space. especially since she's gone back down to 4 track singles, she doesnt need a big disk.
|
^ ...? less than 25% of her single releases were snap-pack, how can u miss them :trout
|
waaaa thx for the info guys... (really want 3" cds now) heuehuhe
|
Well, it was really Ayu that pioneered the abolishment of the 3" it's something Sony or some company said about stop making all players compatible with the 3" that they stopped using the system. I read this awhile back but can't remember the exact details.
You still see some people use the 3" eg. Hitomi Yaida's i/flancy first press had a bonus 3" with a live track, and HYDE's evergreen/Angel's tale/SHALLOW SLEEP First press edition were released in 3". It seems to be mainly reserved for limited editions nowadays. |
yep, garbage's single [push it] had a limited 3" cd...
|
^ Really? I've never seen it o_o" only have the regular one over here...
|
'Drugsherpa' by Muslimgauze is a quite regularly available album (if you know the right shops) that's in 3'' format, just like Shiina Ringo's ZCS by the way, which is 3 times a 3'' disc.

it was pretty cool actually, came in a blister pack :p |
More than 99% of CD players/ROMs can read the 3" CDs - you'll notice in the tray there's an extra inset for them.
They're cute little things. I think one reason they aren't sold much is because they're too easy to steal from shops, so small they can easily fit in the pocket. Even so I'm surprised they're not used more often - looking unique always improves sales. |
Those 3" CD cases can be particularly flimsy though...the plastic tray is only held to the card by a bit of glue. . . . . . -_-'
I never knew Shiina's 3 single set were 3" though, since the case doesn't look it, but that's a pretty cool fact. They have it here, but at $60AUD it's so overpriced =/ |

I only have Namie's CAN YOU CELEBRATE? 3" single and the holder is very flimsy. There was a tiny stip of glue that pretty much came apart when I first bought it 2 years ago. =/ I think her 3" singles stopped when she released Something 'Bout the Kiss since I remember a 3" single released and a regular-sized CD released of the single at the same time.
I'm almost certain Nintendo Gamecube disks are 3" too. |
