[2004] J-pop in Walmart?

Yeah so I'm hanging out in Walmart, cause it's my favourite store, and I go to the CD section, and there before the 'A's in rock+pop, there are two CDs with different color labels... and they woud be Puffy Amiyumi and Nami Tamaki. I was very suprised!! But alas no Ayu. But in Walmart? Yeah I thought so too. So who is Nami Tamaki? Because her CD looked interesting. And at 13.99, I could afford to be a little curious. But Walmart?? Wow. Cool.

Brittany 20th October 2004 05:18 PM

Ayu .. wouldn't be in Wal-Mart.. sorry. She's not signed onto any International/American record label :(

Nami Tamaki is with Tofu Records, the company that is attempting to make Japanese music popular in America. She's a good singer, her stuff is a lotta trancey/dance/pop music.. it's very good, I recommend it :)

Puffy Ami Yumi just came to America for a tour in California and New York.. otherwise, I'm not really into their music :laugh

Bishoujo Ayumi 20th October 2004 05:39 PM

Yep. But my Walmart wouldn't have have any of it. My walmart didn't have EXODUS..or the new Tamagotchi's. But you go to the Walmart 45 minutes away and they have them.

I kinda want Nami Tamaki though.

voltron 20th October 2004 06:10 PM

Puffy AmiYumi has two American released albums, that's probably what you saw.

ayuchanfan 20th October 2004 08:17 PM

i always find this artist named "Keiko Matsui" her covers are boring

don't quote me on this but i think not. i think she started over here. her music is ok. my one friend likes to listen to her.

sxesven 20th October 2004 09:35 PM

How jazzy is she?

Calico 21st October 2004 12:48 AM

I keep looking for T.M.Revolution around here, since he's signed on to Tofu, but to no avail. I don't really like enough of Nami's stuff to buy it. I've never actually heard anything by Puffy. What kind of music are they?

ayuchanfan 21st October 2004 12:54 AM

wasnt l'arc en ciel suppose to release their "SMILE" album in america. Just a though i remembered on their website

paper_doll 21st October 2004 01:00 AM

They did release SMILE in the US.

ayuchanfan 21st October 2004 01:06 AM

yeah and its nowhere to be found here :P, anyways, i found a puffy yumi album in sam goody about a month ago, it was a pink cover, very very bright cover

paper_doll 21st October 2004 02:06 AM

Puffy aren't with TofuRecords, that's why you can find their albums, even I can. But, I can't find any releases from TofuRecords (not sure if they even do Canadian releases), or in the States. And Ive talked to plenty of Americans that havent been able to find Tofu releases.

-BOKU- 21st October 2004 02:21 AM

lol Walmart kicks ass!!

everythings 5 dollars cheaper at walmart than target :yes

y2687 21st October 2004 02:27 AM

that's where all the kids are getting their clothes :yes

Corybobory 21st October 2004 02:27 AM

I've never been to Target before... but I'm such a Walmart fan. They all look the same so I can always find what I'm looking for. Yesterday I bought licorice.

ShAdOw X 21st October 2004 02:30 AM

Keiko Matsui is light chilly jazz type.

Wal-Mart is always better than Target.

Hok 21st October 2004 02:58 AM

OMG, i heard some of (this) Keiko Matsui's music like a month ago, and I thought that it was strange (piano?). Why? Because I assumed it was Keiko Matsui, the lead singer from globe.

Delirium-Zer0 21st October 2004 03:07 AM

Keiko of globe's last name is Yamada, not Matsui. Keiko's a common japanese name for girls, best not to assume anything about who it is. Kinda like the name Hitomi. :P~

Here is a short list of singers that have released things in the states (it's incomplete, but at least this is quite alot of them):
Seiko Matsuda
Toshi Kubota
Ken Ishii
DJ Krush
L'arc~en~Ciel
Pizzicato Five
Puffy (AmiYumi)
Tamaki Nami
X-Japan
Dreams Come True
T.M. Revolution
Utada

Compilations like Tofu Records' Neo Soul have other artists like Crystal Kay and Ken Hirai, and the soundtrack for the animated american movie Heavy Metal 2000 has the song "Inside the Pervert Mound" by Zilch, one of Hide's bands.

Also, puffy have three albums in the US. "An Illustrated History", a best-of that was only released for the american audience, and US versions of their albums "Spike" and "Nice".

Corybobory 21st October 2004 03:16 AM

^I thought Mossimo was Zellers... [edit] wait wait! I get it haha... I... dont' know how to read English. That's why I'm a linguistics major.

I have sneakers from Walmart. They cost 12$. Canadian. That's like 4 cents American.

Brittany 21st October 2004 03:57 AM

I lub Ken Hirai (he's also so damn hot also.. lol) his songs are so touching to me..

O_O Yeppers.. Laruku is with Tofu.. Tofu is a bunch of crazy freaks.. their romaji sucks plain ass. Simple as that :laugh

No, no, no. It wasn't actually anything like that. I actually thought Keiko of globe was named Keiko Matsui.

Hmm. If I say Billie Holiday, do you say Keiko Matsui?

Another Japanese pop artist that made it relatively big in the US: Ryuichi Sakamoto. He's got Virgin to release his albums. In other words: he's got it made. Apart from Pizzicato Five albums, Sakamoto's are the only ones I can pick up in a number of record stores here.

Mirai Noah 22nd October 2004 01:19 AM

I was able to find Nami Tamaki's CD at a local record store (in fact I am listening to it right now ^^). But I cannot find T.M. Revolution. I've seen Puffy at Tower Records, though.

Your best bet right now is to just order it online. Apparently, Tofu Records has gone on an indefinite hiatus since March.

Corybobory 21st December 2007 05:16 AM

Hurrah! A thread I made three years ago :) *beams*

Ani_C 21st December 2007 05:22 AM

I don't know about WalMart, but I just bought ULTRA BLUE in Best Buy last weekend.

paper_doll 21st December 2007 05:50 AM

There were Candian (not sure about US) releases of her Single Collection and Ultra Blue, but I can't find either now.

The version I found in Best Buy was the Taiwanese edition, in case anyone was wondering where it came from.

evolutionricky 20th January 2009 08:04 AM

all we have at my walmart is punjabi music.

Evolution7/4 20th January 2009 04:42 PM

Yeah i saw the Thai version of ultra blue in best buy.

rookies 20th January 2009 11:49 PM

Was Utada Hikaru's HEART STATION album ever released domestically?

JaysenRyan 23rd January 2009 05:21 PM

BWA HA HAHA I work at Wal*Mart, yes the evil company lol. I have never seen a JPOP cd in WalMart though I hold out hope for Ultra Blue cause I swear people said they'd seen it there. Although I was surprised to find The Veronicas and Kerli at my store.

mimika 25th January 2009 06:29 AM

I'm from Toronto Canada...and yes I bought 2 Hikki's CD (ultra blue and heart station) at Wal-Mart!! Hikki is with EMI though so it's an internataional label

the hikki CD's i got actually says "canada edition" at the back!

tinka69 30th January 2009 10:55 AM

what the hell is wallmart? you shop for walls?

Solarblade 30th January 2009 02:46 PM

I don't see J-pop at my wal-mart, but they have Lariku's "SMILE", Nami Tamaki's "greeting" and T.M.Revolution's "Vertical Infinity" at my barnes and noble which I have all of em. I agree Tofu sucks at Romaji

mimika 30th January 2009 10:09 PM

I actually bought ultra blue and heart station at my wal-mart...

here's the thread with more details with pics
