Some old English albums-Any worth getting?

I've recently started to listen to English music again and as I was strolling in HMV the other day several old CDs were on a Christmas discount. Now, I've only heard the singles from these albums years ago and liked them, but not sure how the album tracks fare as an overall album.

Any insight on how the songs on these albums are?

Garbage - Garbage

No doubt - Tragic Kingdom
http://www.hmv.com.au/product_images/197610.jpg
I liked the singles, 'Spiderweb', 'Just a girl' and 'Don't speak'. But found 'Sunday morning' abit bland, haven't heard the rest.

JEWEL - Pieces of you

Again, I like the 3 singles 'Who will save your soul', 'You were meant for me' and 'Foolish games'. Love her voice but haven't heard the rest, although I hated her later 'Intuition' song. o_O'

$99?

Corybobory 22nd November 2004 03:27 PM

I've got all three of those... Garbabe is pretty good, Tragic Kingdom is one of those classcs that you just HAVE to have, it's also a just such a great album, and I love Peices of you but it really has to grow on you... I remember buying it when I was 14, and it took about 5 years for me to appreciate. But now I still listen to No Doubt and Jewel all the time. Garbage... try Version 2.0 instead, I found it better.

Hey! While you're nostalgically going through a cool mid-90's phase, go get some Bush! Bush rocked. Oh! And Our Lady Peace, Naveed. Oh! And silverchair, Frogstomp! Man... '95 was the best year for music.

jerms 22nd November 2004 03:42 PM

i have the lastt 2, ib ought them a long time ago. tragic kingdom is the best album from no doubt, imo. there are some other great songs that should have been singles, but i'm not sure how you'd like it (since i liked sunday morning). i don't know about garbage, but jewel is alright. my sister bought this one. there are good ones, but the cd bored me. not bad at all, just not my style. if you like jewel a lot, this is a pretty good buy.

sxesven 22nd November 2004 04:16 PM

Tragic Kingdom is a brilliant CD, although it strays a bit, stylistically. It wasn't really what I expected after hearing a bunch of the singles. Nevertheless, a great album with some very good songs.

As for Pieces Of You, I wouldn't really know. I've never been into the old Jewel-music, although I totally love 0304, yes, the album that includes Intuition. It's a genius pop-album, better than Tragic Kingdom, basically the best American pop album I have in my collection.

Not too hot on Garbage myself, so I won't give an opinion on their music.

m-a-z-e 22nd November 2004 06:50 PM

Tragic Kingdom is probably No Doubt's best work, I adore No Doubt and Gwen Stefani so I'd say this is a great buy but also Garbage's album is pretty cool...so I'd say between those too.

Cyria 22nd November 2004 08:31 PM

Garbage is one of my favourite albums, there's not a bad track on it. Only Happy When it Rains and A Stroke of Luck are brilliant. Ten years later I'm still listening to the CD.

Tragic Kingdom is No Doubt's best and worth buying, even though for me it doesn't have quite the same staying power as Garbage. Kingdom has classic singles and the other tracks are good enough.

Larisa-chan 22nd November 2004 09:09 PM

definitely get Tragic Kingdom!!

~K+ 22nd November 2004 11:16 PM

Thanks for the comments, maybe I'll pick up Tragic Kingdom before the Christmas sales ends. :P

CT_Cool 23rd November 2004 12:07 AM

I'll say No doubt, am just a girl quite a good song and don't speak a classic ;)

evolutionricky 23rd November 2004 01:37 AM

any Madonna album is good. I still enjoy Alanis Morsette - Jagged Little Pill

~K+ 23rd November 2004 01:57 AM

Jaggid Little Pill isn't on discount...infact, it's even more expensive than new CDs. :(

sxesven 23rd November 2004 10:06 AM

Well, if we're going to suggest a bunch of other artists, be sure to check out Fiona Apple. She's brilliant. And a big influence on Shiina Ringo.

K, HMV has sales all year round. there is a christmas sale then a new yaer sale then an easter sale then summer sale then bargain month then who knows what. you dont have to rush. and in addition, if you wanna buy cds, there are many small shops which offer cds for much cheaper than in hmv. $80 is the norm for cd prices in wanchai.

I know, but I don't live in HK and am not going back anytime soon. x_x' And it's HMV Australia I'm talking about though. (Speaking of which, why doesn't HMV HK has it's own website!?)

I just noticed No doubt has a single collection, would that be a better buy for someone who is very broke?

K i have always thought you lived in hong kong o_O

in that case you should be downloading off the internet instead of buying??? j/k

get tragic kingdom and garbage. they are good.

~K+ 24th November 2004 01:02 AM

If I were living in HK there wouldn't be a problem since all the CDs are cheap! :D

Or I'll just shop at all the nice 2nd hand stores.

Such old albums doesn't seem easy to find to DL anyway.

sxesven 24th November 2004 08:40 AM

The Singles Collection is a good buy, I have it too. Nice collection of songs.

And, I'll say this again, try Fiona Apple. Really.

~K+ 24th November 2004 11:04 AM

Okay, I'll try to find some Fiona Apple, what is she like?

I went into an English 2nd hand records store today, the items are NOT cheap. -_-

She's a big influence on Shiina Ringo. I guess they're somewhat alike, but Fiona Apple's music is a tad more laidback. I'll upload some of her songs tonight.

sxesven 24th November 2004 09:35 PM

I uploaded four of Fiona Apple's songs here, enjoy!

~K+ 25th November 2004 01:34 AM

Thanks sxesven! I'll try them out and tell you what I think of them later.

walking proud 25th November 2004 03:12 AM

Kazuko 25th November 2004 05:06 AM

all right.. you must think i'm some weirdo.. but I suggest buying one of The Beatles CDs... Lucy in the sky w/ diamonds was a really good song =D

~K+ 25th November 2004 05:13 AM

I've heard HYDE's "Lucy in the sky w/diamonds", I heard people said he killed the song. :P

I'll just borrow my dad's I guess if I wanted to listen to The Beatles. :P I don't think it's weird though, I know lots of young people listen to them too because they're a classic.

BanFan 25th November 2004 05:20 AM

Hm...I dare not return to my native language's music. It's so horrible now. But yes, there are some good old ones. :)

Yes she did. And who did she have a big influence on? Was it YAIKO? I remember one artist really liked her. But who?

~K+ 25th November 2004 05:28 AM

No! It was Oni! I think it was after she heard 'You were meant for me' I think. Nice song.

Corybobory 25th November 2004 06:53 AM

Remember Incubus? And I Mother Earth during that period they were cool after Edwin left? And... I'll love Matthew Good Band till the day I die...

Nu-NRG 30th November 2004 04:41 AM

Sky..the older version with the two guys only
and also
Sixpence(sp?) non the richer is also good
Kiss Me is still their best song imho

PickleCookies 30th November 2004 05:47 AM

If you don't mind the wait, I could purchase them for you at Best Buy. Tragic Kingdom is like US$13.99, which is cheaper than the $16.43 that HMV.com.au. Pieces of You is $14.99, while $23.58 at HMV. Garbage is also $14.99, while $17.15 at HMV. So, I could get you a better deal, unless the sale prices aren't listed. However, the trust issue comes into play. But I do have a 100% rating on eBay. Shipping is also a factor. So, whether you do want me to get them for you or not, just ask.

~K+ 30th November 2004 05:51 AM

Nah, don't worry about it Chuck. Since the prices listed on HMV.com.au aren't accurate, they're different in the actual store. They're actually
Tragic Kingdom- $12.99AUD (Saw it for $9.99AUD elsewhere yesterday)
Garbage- $12.99AUD
JEWEL- $9.99AUD

So ya...thanks for the offer though.

PickleCookies 30th November 2004 05:57 AM

Okay. I say buy Tragic Kingdom. But I'm not really sure. Do what you want. :thumbsup

CaliAyuLuva 3rd December 2004 01:39 AM

Go with the No Doubt, they ROCK

Belinda 10th December 2004 02:35 AM

I got all those at the time they came out (back when i actually bought cd's because I had no idea what downloading was :P)

They are all good for their time, but I would rather download then, rather than buying them now...

appears 10th December 2004 04:20 AM

garbage are freakin rad, althou id agree that [version 2.0] is probably their best album so far, im looking forward to [bleed like me]..

the only no doubt cd i own is the greatest hits one, althou gwen stefanis solo effort [love angel music baby] is pretty cool yo...

extepan 10th December 2004 10:04 AM

its amazing this thread is still getting responses. i guess the sale is already over? and k, what have you bought in the end?

~K+ 10th December 2004 10:36 AM

In the end...I brought none of those, I'm broke. But the sale goes til Christmas I think.

I did get U2's 'How to dismantle an atomic bomb' CD+DVD, but then that's a new CD.

And I'm still looking for Alanis Morrisette's 'Jagged Little Pill', every store I've seen it has it priced way higher than new CDs......

extepan 10th December 2004 05:15 PM

k, i hope you can find and download those albums on the net then :)
