Walking Proud PV--the pop and lock guy

So I like Ayumi. I like her PVs. I like the song "Walking Proud"--- in fact, that song is one of my 3 favorites off MY STORY.

And I've just seen the PV. And I just can't help but be left with the feeling of how bad a PV it was. Maybe I just need to have it grow on me... I mean- the concepts were good- I loved some of the imagery ((her with the rhinestones- the strange place, etc.))...

But I think what killed it was the guy on the right of the screen who was doing his pop-and-lock sorta thing. So distracting when he's moving more than the central figure. Bad idea with him... x.X

Opinions on why he was there?

((I understand there's another thread for the PV in general- but I wanna know what's the deal with this guy!))

Jennie Mae 4th January 2005 12:31 AM

I figure, they were all robots in that scene, right? Except for Ayu of course. Because they all had blue stuff inside them, like wires or something, right? Seemed like the kid was programmed to offer candy, and the other dude was just supposed to stare off into space, and it looked like the "pop and lock guy" was a malfunctioning robot. Er. It was a really bizarre PV, but I liked it. Pop and Lock Guy was pretty cool.

hana_sanctuary 4th January 2005 01:55 AM

Pop and lock guy weirded me out. Everyone else looked like ok robots, I suppose- but it was distracting while she was trying to sing. At least they could have placed him in a better position in the scene... some of the times he was directly behind her and with his movements it was hard to focus on the actual singer -_-.;;;

Qt Mashi 4th January 2005 01:56 AM

i liked the PV and yeah they seemed like they were robots

tl1029530921 4th January 2005 02:01 AM

..i don't like the PV...bleh..><...so weird..@_@

spacelion 4th January 2005 02:16 AM

"the pop and lock guy" is doing what we call 'upstaging' AYU! Directing the focus away from the main character to him. But yeah...I liked the PV. If only they made him stay still! >.<

That's exactly what I think -_-.;;; just when he was getting on my nerves the camera angle would switch so that was good... but I think the editors only did that ((the above angle thing)) because there may have been too many shots with the "pop and lock guy" (henceforth- P n' L)~maybe there were too many shots with him in it. The above angle was a horrible angle--- but it may have been the only alternative.

gogirlanime 4th January 2005 03:02 AM

yeah, I didn't like the extra people at all, they were all bad, the PV was cheaply made too, I would have much rather seen Ayu in a real setting instead of a set that was obviously a set. I only like the "kanariya" part of that PV.

Larisa-chan 4th January 2005 03:52 AM

yeah, that guy was really annoying =/ soo distracting!

devilayu 4th January 2005 04:03 AM

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the actual PV but I really liked the scene where she had the short, black wig in the white room.

Echiko 4th January 2005 04:26 AM

I really agree! That guy was really distracting!! But i guess they did not know where he would go that wouldn't be distracting. Haha.

LEOyumi 4th January 2005 05:49 AM

I think that is the intention, to distract.. That's why he was there o.o~
I love this PV, my favourite from all My Story PV's, with Carols. ^^

BanFan 4th January 2005 05:58 AM

I watched the first 30 seconds of that PV the first 30 seconds of the Humming 7/4 PV streaming, and I turned them off because I thought they were boring and I didn't like the songs. But I thought the "Walking proud" PV was a little more interesting, but still boring...

Looks like I won't buy the CD+DVD, but I'll probably buy CAROLS CD+DVD because I love that PV! :D

lolo66 4th January 2005 06:35 AM

Maybe distracting, but it must be the intended disctraction. It's all directed. The meaning? well, I think they just throw it in there for visual. Sometimes people tends to over ananlyze things.

hana_sanctuary 4th January 2005 06:40 AM

How can you over analize when you're just watching it for the first time, though? I would imagine that the second or third time you'd watch for more detail- but for this to stand out the first time?

And I don't see why it should be intentional... of course the robot part- but maybe that guy over acted...

lolo66 4th January 2005 06:47 AM

If the director(s) didn't like it or intend for it , then it it will be definitely be cut, like the swinging part in CAROLS' PV.

Yes, that's what I think too ^^

Larisa-chan 4th January 2005 07:18 AM

it should have rained on him or something halfway through the PV and made him malfunction so he'd stop <3

Kazuko 4th January 2005 07:25 AM

hmm.. that guy was pretty weird... but at the same time it was pretty cool... however, i don't know what's the significance of his presence.. XD

Tasked 4th January 2005 08:42 AM

I think it's a very good PV considdering it was created in 1 day..

Well- that's true... but if such a large chunk of the PV was shot in that one scene... cutting it out would be hard, ne?

nanami606 4th January 2005 10:36 AM

I really liked the PV. And that robot guy. I don't see why people are whining so much. It's never good enough for them.

If Ayu does something, it's never good. And if she doesn't do something, it's not good again.

Ayu made the rest of the PV'S(About You, Humming 7/4, and walking proud) to appreciate her fans support. In three days. She had to make quick because the album was soon going to be released. I don't think that those PV's were even planned at first.

Well, they would've called "CUT!" on the spot, if they they didn't want it. I don't think it would've ran under the directors' radar, if it didn't ran under ours.

SheFliesHigher 4th January 2005 11:04 PM

I really thought that the pop-and-lock guy was going to attack Ayu at one point in the video. They show him walking towards her quickly, menacingly, and the angles really focus on his approach...but then the PV just goes back to Ayu singing. I was confused.

elepop 4th January 2005 11:56 PM

I think it's a very good video. I like the concept, Ayu looks great, the final shot makes you wonder what's underneath the cloth. I don't get some stuff but yeah, it's Ayu! There's always some weird stuff on her PV anyway. Maybe there's a relation with the song's lyrics? Or she's trying to express another emotion? I don't know.

I don't mind the weird malfunctional guy. The PV is overally amazing. I won't dislike it for a such little detail.

You don't have to take this thread that way. All I'm saying is that the guy was distracting and I wanted to get people's take on his significance and presense there. I'm not critisizing it saying that it was a horrible PV just because of that guy. I all ready said I liked some of the imagery--- besides, we're not true fans if we just say EVERYTHING is good, are we? That's just saying we're blind. And while some people critisize everything, there are those who don't and like to voice their opinions as to why they don't agree with some things.

Don't make things black and white- "you like everything or you hate everything". That's not being objective at all.

Besides, it's not like anyone here doesn't appreciate Ayu's efforts in making the PV. We do or else we wouldn't have watched it and have been making comments on it.

Hey- even if the PV only took one day to shoot, then maybe that's one of the reasons something distracting was allowed to happen? I don't wanna say "half-ass", but if it only took one day and was without much planning, things like that happen. What can we expect? I'm just saying I personally didn't think having him there was a good idea.

elepop 5th January 2005 12:41 AM

^^ If you hate the part with the weird guy so much, skip the part. LOL. :D

I probably will- which sux because I like the song so much ;_;

----

On second thought, maybe I'll just grit my teeth and try super hard to focus on Ayu instead of him moving in the bg. I'll do it for the sake of the music. Ayu- carry me through, please.

Well, then you don't have to watch the PV. Just listen to the music instead. I downloaded the PV too, but i don't even watch it even more. Sometime, i feel like i'm wasting my time downloading those 'cause i rarely watch them.

Or else, you can cover the weird guy with your hands LOL!

walking proud 5th January 2005 02:27 AM

how come everytime someone is dressed extravegantly they're automatically "Taking the spotlight off of ayu"? just like peco.

Yes. Sorry. You're right. I was a bit rude. :headache

MTRLevolution 5th January 2005 05:51 PM

i'm glad somebody made a thread on that idiot. first of all, he takes away attention from ayu. last i checked, it wasn't his song or pv. second of all, doing the robot dance to convey that you're a robot is cliche as hell. thirdly, HE SUCKS AT THE ROBOT. he's not even good at what he does! i'm sure ayu could've enlisted the help of one of her 95 or something dancers to do it thirty times better. the pv being made in one day is no excuse for something like that to happen. the director needs to be shot. i really enjoyed the pv other than the robot guy, he totally ruined it for me.

Why are you bashing on the robot guy? He didn't do anything wrong. It wasn't his idea. It was the idea of the director of the PV to make him dance and move like that. What makes you think he's trying to get more attention than Ayu? He's on the background. Ayu is in front. :irked

i agree, the director sucks too. and i don't care if it wasn't his choice to do the robot or distract viewers, that just makes him a tool. as far as him getting more attention, i'm saying (like many others would agree) that his dancing takes away from the audience's attention to ayu, which is probably not what anybody wanted. and that's regardless of where he's placed on the set. and i think you're digging too deep to defend some guy we'll never meet. i don't like him, his presence ruined the pv for me, end of story.

*claps in agreement*

First it's Peco, now we have the extra in walking proud 's PV or its director... *sigh
