what is an OBI for?
Lol, I have no idea what these cards are for that are in the Ayumi Singles...
I threw the "&" one in the garbage thinking it was nothing of use... did I just throw away something that would make my "&" album incomplete -.-? What does OBI stand for and what is it used for? (Is it supposed to be stuck in somewhere...) What do YOU do with YOUR OBI Cards? |
"Obi" is a Japanese word for the sash (cloth belt) worn with kimonos. From what I read somewhere a while ago, it's also used as a decorative band around an LP (aka vinyl disc). Unless you're some collector of CDs and the things that go with them (i.e. booklets, etc), I don't think it matters whether you keep it or not, but it'd be up to you to decide that ;) !

i like to keep mine actually. in fact, i keep the cd in mint condition, including the obi and the plastic wrap. im like a perfectionist freak...lol... i get an exacto knife and cut a little slit in the plastic so i can take the cd out and make a copy, then i put it back into the plastic and put them in a place where no dust can get to them....haha, yeah, im a little obsessive
|
LOL OMG Y2KSPHINX UR LIKE MY TWIN. Hahaha I do like the same exact thing except I don't make copies. I'm just SUPER careful when I put them in my stereo. I keep everything and the plastic wrap too my family gives me weird looks when I open my cds it has to be like perfect. Also I always use antibacterial and oil reducing hand soap and moisturize after before touching my cd collection. CAUSE JPOP IS HELLA EXPENSIVE actually CD collecting is hella expensive overall. I don't even have that many authentic CDs around 19 or so. Most of them Ayu hehehe I just love her. Anyways yeah I keep everything ^_^.
Me just recently got: Zanna Don't! Broadway Musical Album (GAH I LOVE JAI RODRIGUEZ and I can't stop listening to it haha so POPPY) |
You crazy!?!? LOL Being so hard to find (and since I got my cds from a great friend) I surely keep the OBI card! The OBI one for Daybreak rocks (itīs made of blue plastic with an ayupan in the back) and looks pretty cool!
|
:laugh i didnt know what to do with mine..the one that came with &...i taped it in place.. :P
|
I have kept all mine ever since I made the grave mistake of throwing away my "I Am..." OBI card :doh They don't really do much...but I'd rather just keep it anyways :shrug
|
Err... I didn't ever know what to do with them either. I've kept most of them. But they're really just umm... yeah... :think
|
I just keep the spine card (obi) while throwing away the plastic wrap. ^_^
|
The OBI strip on my Jpop CDs I keep... I did make a big mistake throwing away a few OBIs, but they were from my anime soundtracks... and I display all my jpop CDs near my desk so I can just grab one when I'm writing or drawing something.

what is an obi for?
I don't know if this has been posted before but anyways...I am a fan of jpop music for years (my favourite ayumi-of couse, koda, namie and more) what i want to know is what is an obi used for?
|
obi is the thing they package with on the spine of the cd right? if so, I think for overseas versions, they use so they can print other languages like chinese and korean. Not sure for Japan versions, but it's probably just so it looks more complete and nicer.
|
for decoration, and probably cheaper packaging. (no back cover)
|
And for putting on all the info so the artwork doesn't have to be ruined by barcodes, price, release date, etc.
|
what IS an OBI anyways?
|
That piece of paper that goes around the spine of the CD extenally is the OBI.

So the thing on the left? That's cool :)! I really like the one for Duty and the Daybreak single
lol....good thing i save those...>>! Too bad my My Story one was kinda damaged... |
But I wanted to know what happens if u lost them?
|
oh..the paper that really useless its called obi
but its still really important although i don't know what it is used for |
I think it's there just so you know which cds are creditable and which aren't.
|
It came into use for two main purposes. One was the importing of western cds, so that the cds could be alphabetized by their katakana spelling. On domestic (japanese) cds, it was used to advertise the artist's other releases (you still see that sometimes on japanese cds now). Now a japanese cd just looks bare without one, so they're almost always there, just for decoration really. Alot of times the designer of the artwork will use it for the track list, and with some CDs, you NEED it if you want to keep the tracklist (i.e. kanariya, Fly high... it's hard to read the one inside Far away so having the obi helps). It doesn't help make it easier to see what cds are real, as the few japanese-manufactured bootlegs i've seen also include obis, and HK/China manufactured bootlegs don't end up in japanese stores, as that'd be too damaging to the japanese economy. Japanese CDs are expensive, and japanese people know that. Western CDs almost always have to have extra bonus tracks and have to be released up to a week in advance of their original street date just so they're a little more appealing to the japanese people than their western counterparts. But i digress.
Oh, another thing is (again, a design thing) that the release date, price, copyright info, and UPC scan code are on the obi, so as not to interfere with the design of the back cover. (Just compare the US and japan versions of Utada's Exodus there. The US version is just ... yuck >:P) |
Well I kept all mines i don't kno why but I did...anyways thanks!
also why don't westerns do that!? |
i :heart obi's!
|
i keep em ^_^
thanks for explaining |

Most of the extra details go onto the obi like the detailed tracklisting and tie ups. Sometimes, it also indicates whether its PC or Mac Compatible etc.
Yup, its main use is for decoration so that the stickers and everything don't interfere. It also makes the spine of the cd look "fuller" because u'll just see the title and everything when the spine is facing you instead of the plastic cover then the title of the CD (you can't even see it clearly at times because of the reflection of the light on the CD) and it makes the entire CD look as if its a box, without the spaces in between. It's mostly for decoration but it also helps because it contains quite a substantial amount of information. |
Obi-Strips
What do you do with those?
I often hear it quoted on sites that sells CDs, but I've never quite understood what makes those piece of paper a selling point. I mean, the CD, case, booklet all have (obvious) purposes, but I honestly don't know what I am supposed to do with Obi strips. |
i use them as bookmarks :D
|
what is an OBI for?
I always wanted to know what those things are XD
|
I've kept a few cool ones such as Ayu's Duty, Namie Amuro's Queen of Hip Hop, and Koda Kumi's Secret OBI (which I taped to the case) but a lot of the time I'll just throw them away. I buy the CDs so that I can enjoy them. I don't plan on selling them later so that's just what I do.
|
I always keep the obi, if you get rid of it, your cds worth nothing.
|
I think OBIs put a unique quality to Japanese CDs...=) I keep all of mine, heheh.
|
i keep all of my ayu cds wrapped in plastic with the original packaging cause i don't want it to get damaged..i forked out good money for the cds so i'll keep them looking new :)
obis are ok except when i want to take out the cd from the plastic wrap it can get in the way sometimes.. |
I have a question concerning obi's for overseas releases (Hong Kong and Taiwan), does the info in the obi come in japanese of chinese, I think it's obvious that it might come in chinese, but I don't really know (I'm more interested in knowing about HK obis).
|
I keep all mine ^^ I think they're unique too myself
|
...I throw all of mine away...

I keep mine too :D (well except LOVEppears and Duty cuz they're oversea version). Everytime I open a new cd, I will just take the cd out and put it into the cd case that I keep all the cds in. I will seal the cd with the plastic wrap and store it into a drawer that I put all my cds in.
Like others said the OBI slips serve some purposes. However if you dun care about it, it doesn't matter what the purposes are. If you treat the whole cd as a treasure, then you can keep it. If you love being perfect, you keep it. If you just want the music, dun let this small slip bothers you :D |

But sometimes it's just in English/Japanese with no Chinese. It really depends on which artist's HK version you buy from. Taiwan OBIs usually have the artist/band's name translated in Chinese, as well as the title of the album, even if it's originally in English, and that looks icky. |
I started keeping mine after knowing that jpop fans do this *_* a few months ago. I think they're cool to look at, and just for keepsake. I used to throw away everything though. And if you think about it, obi's ARE pretty useless, hehe.
