Caroline Lufkin's First Album: Murmurs

Caroline Lufkin's first album has been completed and is set for release on March 6, 2006, but I think if you order it from her label they'll ship it early. It only has 9 tracks, but if they're as good as "Where's My Love" was, then it should be a great album!

Quote:

Following the critical and fanatical praise of last year's otherworldly "Where's My Love" single, Tokyo, Japan's Caroline releases her enchanting debut album. Murmurs is a thing of blessed beauty that defies easy description. It is nearly impossible to attach words to the supernatural brilliance of Caroline's songs. From the weeping trumpet and innocent lyrical sentiments of opener "Bicycle" to the cinematic tide of "Winter" - whose orchestral weight and lyrical hopefulness threaten to crush the listener from the inside-out - Murmurs is a truly masterful album. No samples were used: dozens of live acoustic instruments - pianos, harps, bells, guitars, strings and hand drums - are shaped around Caroline's crystalline voice and threaded together by warm bass and dense beats. With a transcendence that could give you chills on a blistering summer day just as easily as it could warm your body on a bitterly cold night, it's no wonder Caroline has developed a reputation as queen of the "snow jams."

Yes, it is! It's Olivia Lufkin's sister! :D

(and they have a brother Jeff Lufkin who may have something in the works as well.)

ImpactBreaker 10th February 2006 11:48 PM

Jeff raps in one of OLIVIA songs (the "something" unconscious666)

Amazing news! thanks touchedstar!

sxesven 10th February 2006 11:55 PM

I just noticed her a couple of weeks ago on the Temporary Residence website and only later realized that this was Olivia Lufkin's sister. Might even have to check it out, seeing as she's on TR.

you should, she's awesome! you can preview "where's my love" on the temporary residence site. its very ethereal and beautiful. definitely give it a listen.

sxesven 11th February 2006 01:30 AM

I downloaded it a while ago, but when I realised it was Olivia's sister I deleted the file immediately, lol. However, she is on TR, so I'll definitely try it.

Caroline is different from Olivia, not grungy.

are you serious?! wow...i love most of Olivia's work even more than what I've heard of Caroline's. i guess to each their own. :yes

Definitely to each their own. :) Olivia just definitely isn't my cup of tea. Imo, her work is very cliché and poorly written - but of course, that is just an opinion. :yes Downloading the Caroline track now, can't wait to hear it.

Alright, it's playing right now. First impression: not bad at all. Sounds a bit like a poppier version of Noriko Tujiko's glitchpop. Not too crazy about the voice, but that's not a big issue. Will check out her album. :)

ohsixthirty 11th February 2006 02:05 PM

^yep, i can respect your opinion. :yes

Noriko Tujiko and glitchpop? I've never heard of either of those. Sounds interesting.

edit: wait, i looked it up...how have i never heard of glitchpop before...i LOVE what i've previewed thus far of different bands.

sxesven 11th February 2006 02:40 PM

It's definitely worth checking out. The Japanese are easily the best at it, the range of brilliant glitch artists they have is amazing. My personal favourite would be Noriko Tujiko (or Tujiko Noriko, depends where you're looking really), whose songs are immensily beautiful. Her entire discography is worth checking out; Shojo Toshi is my personal favourite.

ImpactBreaker 11th February 2006 02:56 PM

Yes, "Where's My Love" is completely in english.

ohsixthirty 11th February 2006 02:59 PM

yeah, i fully expect the entire album to be in english seeing as how the two songs i've heard so far have been and its a u.s. release.

and sxesven, thanks a ton, i'm definitely going to be checking out a range of glitch artists.

[ Melinda ] 11th February 2006 07:53 PM

I've heard Where's my love, and it was really good. I think I'll try to get to know this artist better, it's just that she always reminds me of her sister Olivia, and I miss Olivia. Oh, please come back <3

BanFan 21st February 2006 01:40 AM

It comes in a slipcase, apparently.

I love slipcases. ^-^

ImpactBreaker 21st February 2006 04:59 AM

This album is great, I just heard it! I love this kind of calm music. i really wonder what this genre is called :think

I love "I'll Leave My Heart Behind" it sounds like a mix of OLIVIA's and Chihiro Onitsuka's songs :D

Rins-chan 21st February 2006 09:27 AM

In Germany it will be released on March 14th or around that date and I think I might give it a try since I really loved her "Where's My Love" Single :)

Mad_Cactuar 24th February 2006 07:44 AM

Oh, this is the artist one of my friend at U-O has been recommending to me. Where's My Love is a good song.. I'm currently downloading the album..

Jkb123 24th February 2006 10:01 AM

Oooh can you upload it please??

Fevenita 24th February 2006 05:00 PM

Interesting, if I can hear some samples first I might consider buying the album. Well, after getting my over $100 order from YesAsia first -_-;. I've liked OLIVIA but I haven't heard any songs from Caroline yet. Thanks for the info!

Ah, I've been wondering who's the guy in that song ^^. For some reason it's one of my favorite tracks on The Lost Lolli even though I usually don't like rap.

sexysaucestar 24th February 2006 09:59 PM

I want to hear some Caroline Lufkin...:(

Anyway, thanks Brian for the news :D Hehe.

BanFan 25th February 2006 05:08 AM

Of course, Temporary Residence releases worldwide.

appears 25th February 2006 12:52 PM

^ id never heard of temporary residence... what is it, some kind of alternative label?

sxesven 25th February 2006 02:00 PM

Yep. They released albums by famous (indie) bands like Explosions In The Sky, Mono, Tarentel and Cex. They mostly do post-rock and anything experimental.

EDIT: by the way, if anyone wants the lyrics for this album (they're not in the booklet) you can get them HERE.

Rins-chan 16th March 2006 07:39 AM

I really wonder why nobody ripped it b now.
The think is that I would really like to buy it but it's not that cheap at last and I have not chance to listen to it before I order it because there is no local store which has it or even heard of this album/artist ;_; that's really poor I think.
But I am used to it. There are only such mainstream artists and so on you can find here. If you really want something new and not that ordinary you need to order it from some online shop.
I would also be very happy about some - let's say - 120 sec samples of good songparts. That should be enought to decide whether to buy it now or wait until it's a bit cheaper.

sxesven 16th March 2006 06:56 PM

Pitchfork reviewed it: 7.8/10!

Rins-chan 16th March 2006 08:10 PM

Thank you very much for the link. But I can't see any samples.

ja ne

sxesven 16th March 2006 08:36 PM

Oh, I know. I don't know about samples. I just happen to read PitchFork and Murmurs suddenly popped up there. 7.8/10 means that they LOVE it.

The album was available for download through torrents long before the cd was even available. If you look at my posts you'll see it has been quite some time since I downloaded the files and listened to them LOL

ohsixthirty 16th March 2006 10:03 PM

We can't share it here under the new forum rules anyhow...as this is an American release. But samples can be found on Caroline's myspace.

http://www.myspace.com/caroline

and by the way Rins-chan, i really like your Caroline set!!!

Rins-chan 17th March 2006 12:03 PM

I do not have BT and I am not willing to get it.
I am just looking for some not RealMedia samples. Since this is not my own internet connection I am not allowed to use any P2P things and stuff like this. So that's why I asked for the samples or something like this.

@touchstar: Thank you very much for the link :) that helps a little more.
And thank you. I really love this pictures of Caroline and so I was inspired by it ^-^
