i think this week just confirms a bit more that 200,000 for "Startin'/Born to Be..." is getting less and less likely. i think a better guess would be between 185,000-190,000.

Cyria 18th April 2006 09:46 PM

perfectdeath 20th April 2006 02:43 PM

krishna 21st April 2006 03:37 AM

Thanks for (m)u sales update!

micster 21st April 2006 03:47 AM

Heh, if (miss)understood sales stay like this it will take approx 65+ weeks to get to 1mil

hallelujah_united 21st April 2006 03:27 PM

Is this thread going to remain for 65 weeks though?

And I don't get why sales have slumped so badly this year. I read that the Japanese are starting to spend more again...:shrug

huh? (to the 1st question)

I think they are. so far, overall sales have been mixed. there are some good ones and some not so good. wait until when oricon makes it half year report (in late may) then compare with last year.

Kumichan 22nd April 2006 10:07 AM

I hope Startin'/Born To Be... will break 200,000

And (miss)understood to be 1 million ^-^

darkswordz 22nd April 2006 10:13 AM

may Ayu should start to buy her own albums

Endlessoul 22nd April 2006 12:34 PM

Still dropping. But it's not so bad.

Thanks for the info.

Yeah, it's odd. As I theorized before, it seems that all sales are down for just about everyone except for the boy bands. B'z newly released single failed to get 200,000 it's opening week(down from their last single and it's a better song I think.) Also, Otsuka's Frienger sold 70,000 copies its first week.

well as of rite now, the top 30 singles combined have sales of about 8.2-8.3m. At 2005 half year, the combined sales of the top 30 was about 8.5-8.6m. There's 1 more month left before half year for oricon ends. So i think the figure will exceed last years.

But as has been stated nearly all of the top sales have been by boy bands - not by solo artists or artists that have commonly led the sales figures.

So while sales for boy bands are doing relatively good, everyone elses sales are down.

truehappiness 25th April 2006 02:31 AM

Seriously.

If you subtract the boybands.. that's like.. nothing LOL

well last year, the chart was dominated by male groups and last year was a pretty good year in overall sales. female solo artists (minus ayu and to an extent hikki) could never really sell as much as male groups. as for male solo artists, theres just a lack of them rite now.

Last year there were more solo artists and non-johnny's groups selling compared to this year thus far. Almost all artists that are non-Johnny's sales' are down compared to this time last year. Only one song by a female artist has sold more than 200,000 copies so far this year.(and that is only because it was used in a drama) That's just not good at all. No matter what way you look at it, the only people selling well right now are the boy bands.

truehappiness 25th April 2006 04:38 AM

Male solo artists?

XD

I think very rarely do male solo artists come to be 'omg hot.'

Usually the groups do the best. Only male one I can think of that sells WELL and charts on the oricon a lot is Ken Hirai, and he has the top album position [right?]

I agree that this year especially there's a lot more JE in the top 10. (half of the top 10 is JE). But, there's about the same amount of non-JE and the same amount of solo artists in the top 30. As for having only 1 female artist selling more than 200k so far into the year, if you look back at the same time last year, "Jupiter" was the highest selling female single during this time, and that only sold 175k. We already have 3 female singles selling more than that. But hey, the year's not even half way done yet, so I'm still very optimistic for the rest of the year.

Me too. He's really the one that I can think of when it comes to success right now. Yes, his best album does have the top album position so far.

You have to remember that Jupiter did not come out in 2005. It came out way back in 2003! :) It was on the chart a very long time and sold close to a million copies. So it's not the best example. Better would be that by this time last year Ayumi released Step You which went on to sell 345,000 copies, BoA had released one of her most financially successful singles ever with Do the Motion, Mika Nakashima released Sakura Mau Koro which sold over 100,000 copies(a strong number for her). Compare that to this year where Ayumi's sales have fallen to under 200,000 and none of the supposed "successors" to her throne are selling well either.(Koda's album is selling great, but we are talking singles here.) That just looks sad. :no

I'm not necassarily comparing Ayu and other artists to the sales of the boy bands - the boy groups do typically sell more, as you stated. The only artists that hang with them sales wise are usually Ayumi, B'z, Mr. Children, and the Southern All Stars. What I was looking at more, was comparing each artist and boy group to themselves. The boy groups sales are pretty much all up across the board and other artists sales are dropping. Which sucks. I like my share of boy bands sometimes too but this year so far has been ridiculous.

truehappiness 25th April 2006 09:18 AM

Well, mainly we can blame it on fans of the other artists being all confused on who to purchase from and all that xD :x

I know that Jupiter was released in 2003. But what I was trying to say was that at the same point last year, there was still a lack of female singles too. There wasn't a 200k selling single until STEP you's 2nd week, which is pretty much in line with this year. (but of instead of ayu, its ayaka) As for BoA and Mika, all I can think is maybe the post-BEST album craze hit them?

Since Kumi hasn't released any singles outside of the 12 this year, we cant really say anything. But, all 3 of her non limited ones did pretty well. Yes, Someday/BoysGirls didnt pass 100k; but that was released 2 weeks before the album. Compared that to Promise/Star which was also released 2 weeks before her 1st best album in september, Someday/BoysGirls did a lot better.

yamogi 25th April 2006 01:49 PM

well, I don't care that

What post-BEST album craze? She released Sakurairo in early '05 and the BEST in late '05.

oh sorry i was really referring to CRY NO MORE and for BoA, everything after DTM.

*Petit* 25th April 2006 10:32 PM

Perhaps there won't be any female solos in the top ten this year? Last year only one made it; Mika Nakashima, at number 10.

for 2004 there were only three, COUNTING GORIE. :P I guess the trend is going against female solos and it's continuing this year.

Let's just hope that Ayu can make it to the top 10 this year with her new mega-summer release! Last time she was in the top ten was when "&" was released....

addicted 26th April 2006 12:52 AM

OMG!! Ayu 1st album didnt break 1 million!!!

fεяnαndδ 26th April 2006 03:09 AM

Question. Did MY STORY reach this many sales as fast as (miss)understood did (approximately 4 months 20 days)?

If (miss)understood's sales continue like this, it may very well take her until 2007 to reach one million. MY STORY took a year.

MY STORY passed the million in 6 weeks after release, which was around late January 2005.

Oh, it did? O_o I must be thinking of A BALLADS. So (miss)understood isn't doing too good, is it?

darkswordz 27th April 2006 02:50 PM

^(m)u performed quite well considering the current status of the market, but not good enough for Ayu's standard =(

Yep true.. Maybe standards have to be reset?

Sales seem to be picking up again.. This week's one sold over 200 000.. Maybe the sales will go all out like a few years back? And Ayu's next single might really break a million. It depends on promotion I say.. :D
