Koda Kumi shocking interview on YouTube

Remember this thread that was locked without any good reason?

So yes, many people PM'ed asking if the interview was on video and it is on YouTube. Thanks to MaiK from Uwasa for uploading. Go here for the videos playlist. There's 5 parts and I think that's not the whole special, just Part I of 3.

For the mods: Can you please not make this news part of the locked thread? Because lots of people asked me and if it's there, I think not many people will see.

could someone translate this, or maybe just the interesting parts. All i understood was that it takes her 2 hours to do her makeup and stuff haha! but she always looks so good so maybe it's a worthwhile sacrifice...

andre2907 30th July 2006 11:17 PM

There's already a thread with some parts translated. See the link on the first post.

I'll rip it, but the quality will be the same as it is on YT. What file do you want. .avi, wmv, mpeg...

xiaou-xijiang 31st July 2006 12:43 AM

I'm surprised, the quality didn't come out as bad as I thought it would! :yes

part two

part three

part four

- AVEX didn't let her appear on TV at the start of her carreer. Max Matsuura said: "We were looking for a singer and she was the best one.. but she was VERY ugly and VERY fat". Max Matsuura is so mean... and he probably don't have a mirror at home, I mean, he looks like an old monkey... but anyway, she was too ugly and fat to appear on TV and, according to her, she was eating too much because she was very frustrated that any of her singles went TOP 10.

- AVEX said to her "Or you lose weigh or you will be fired". So she didn't had an opition. Her boyfriend helped her and she went on a diet (she couldn't eat anything after 6 PM and she eat mostly fish and drink water and she still does that)

- About AVEX employees she said: "I was always at the building saying Hi to everybody and smiling but everybody just ignored me. It was very hard..."

- Her mother said it was very tought to see her sister, misono, debuting, going on lots of TV shows and winning lots of awards, all of this very quickly while Kuu didn't had a hit single and she was on the musical industry for a long time. It was very hard for the whole family.

- After a Day After Tomorrow concert, Kumi saw how her sister had lots of controls in her wardrobe, set list, etc. She always believed AVEX knew what to do with her, but after seeing her sister, she decided to opinate more on her carreer.

- She only had her contract renewed because of the "FINAL FANTASY" single, which was a hit. But after that, her sales quickly dropped. She was just another singer, with anything special. So her staff (mostly a female agent who always goes to work in very short-shorts) had the idea of the "ero-kakoii" style.

- She was the first very-sexy local artist and her first single with her new image, LOVE & HONEY, was a big hit. From then on, she kept the image and her sales only went up.

- About the ero-kakoii image she said: "I don't like it, lots of people have a very negative view of me. But when I talked to AVEX president about that, he said I couldn't change my image. Maybe in the near future, when I can do what I want, I'll stop with this ultra-sexy style, but 'till this day comes, I'll keep being ero-kakoii"

The third part of the special was "A Month in the Life of Koda Kumi". It starts at the AVEX office. The office isn't glamorous at all, it's just a packed and small room where managers, agents and staff of BoA, Namie Amuro, Ayu, etc works.

They interview the agent who created the "ero-kakoii" image and she takes the reporter to the meeting room. The meeting room is more what we expect, more organized. There is Koda Kumi, they show her taping radio spots, a PV and doing CMs.

At the end, Koda Kumi confirms she had plastic surgery to make her eyes bigger.

PLEASE SOMEONE DO SUBS OR TRANSLATION!!! i REALLY REALLY WANNA KNOW WHAT SHE'S SAYING...AND THE KIDS CRYING IN THE CLASSROOM WHEN KUMI ENTERED...SO TOUCHING!!!

andre2907 31st July 2006 02:36 AM

I don't believe many people in this board really know japanese (for the lack of real translations around here), so maybe that's not the best place to ask for subs?

LacusClyne 31st July 2006 03:11 AM

or maybe just a raw translation of the main talk part? so that others will get an idea.

Syphex 31st July 2006 03:25 AM

Is there a good picture of Kuu when she was younger? I'm curious to see how "fat" and "ugly" she really was (I'm betting she's not, and they're just being nitpicky though..)

everlastingRAINBOW 31st July 2006 03:26 AM

Ohhh wow! Those were pretty cool, loved the re-enactments! She is so sweet to those school girls <3!

greggerz189 31st July 2006 04:32 AM

she really is the new icon. the way those girls reacted to seeing her, i doubt that ayu's had that kind of effect on people...and the Grand Taishou to top it all off. and now she's beaten KinKi Kids. i don't think it's the greatest thing in the world, and i wish she would cover up a bit more, but i must say that she has worked hard to get where she has and it's nice to see how happy she is. i have to say that i'm happy for her. she is such a nice person. it's just that ero kakkoi image that i really don't like. it's too bad, because i know she probably won't ever shed that image because it's what got her where she is now. but i do miss the old kuu back in the real Emotion/Cutey Honey days...

anyway. just to put it out there, I'm not a jealous ayu fan, and i don't dislike Koda Kumi. I'm not a fan of her ero kakkoi image, and I don't think her music is SPECTACULAR, but i do enjoy some of her songs. no hard feelings if i put off any kuu fans. thanks for posting this link.

Well, there were these pre-idol clips around, and she really was.... no all that, to put it nicely. That discription from max wasen't all off really. Compared to pre-idol clips of other idols they were really bad. Not because she was physically REALLY ugly because she obioulsy werent (she woulden't had been picked uo by avex if she was), but she had no charisma what so ever. She wasen't idol skinny either. Compared to preidol clips I've seen of f.ex ayumi hamasaki, Ai takahashi and Aya matsuura, she definetly had a lot to improve.

Yeah I think that she is my icon, its true that my fave is Amuro but the way she is...she become my idol...think of her as a not perfect girl, that had to fight much for become popular and was not perfect but also overweight before debut..she is human, I know everyone is but that human part of her never gone, many idols look like perfect dolls but she is always human and natural, I like her for that...and I enjoy her music much, to tell the truth I think Ayu's music used to be better and original before and now I think she lack of originality and Kuu didnt reach that originality Ayu had but I really like her =)

And thanks so much for the YSI links xiaou-xijiang! ^°^

Oh, btw, can people just stop saying my translation was sensationalist? If you want a perfect translation, I suggest you to learn Japanese or Portuguese, so you can look the real one at Uwasa.

It's not sensationalist. Max Matsuura called Koda fat. Maybe Max called her chubby, but the translation from the japanese word is "gorda" (I'm 100% sure) and the translation gorda is fat. So don't scold me for saying Max said she was fat, because he did. Plus, there's a more especific translation of what he said later on the thread, so look for that.

And there's anything sensationalist on them. Actually, there's most of the info in the other recaps and more, so stop saying it's out of proportion or misleading because from what I saw people translating, it isn't at all.

Oh well, that discussion is over. Now, let's hope someone decides to sub that.

In Japan, "fat" means you weigh more than 115 lbs. And people think that the west has impossible standards of beauty. :rolleyes

Ayu has had that effect and to a greater degree I think, but right now it is Koda's turn to shine. Also, Koda has not beaten the Kinki Kids. Sales from this week:

1 - Kinki Kids - 239.000
2 - Koda Kumi - 207.000

Bad news for Ayu though as that makes Koda's single the highest opening sales for a female artist this year and its total sales will likely surpass any female single released this year so far.

Very interesting video though. Thanks for the link. It helped me understand Koda better.

Yes and imagine all the artist who try that hard and never suceed? Koda was lucky.

Once, I read an english article about a japanese AVEX female artist who never suceeded. She was pretty and all and she tried very hard, but she didn't had any hit and so she had an eating disorder and tried suicide and then give up on the entertainment world (I find it during a random Google search and unfortunetly, I didn't bookmarked it)... I think that's very common...

Thats sad ... Reminds me of Nanase Hoshii

her second single was released in March and it only sold around 1,500. It fell out of the oricon 100 in a week

*Petit* 1st August 2006 06:21 PM

I don't think it's neccessarily "bad news" for ayu. remember, this is 4 hot wave, it's supposed to be THE koda single. To me this seems like Koda's "A" or something. Ayu has only released "normal" singles this year, the decision to change BLUE BIRD from another triple A side to what it became was probably the wisest decision this year, as she ended up having almost comeback sales with a normal single. 4 hot wave 'll probably end up like mika nakashima's GLAMORUOS SKY single did, the special female solo single selling a lot. The past years since 2002, in which ayiu's H was number one overall, she hasen't had the top female single. The difference IMO from this situation to the past years is that koda may have more staying power (if her general sales became like koi no tsubomi) than f.ex ai otsuka, ayaka hirahara, mika nakashima had. But we won't be able to see that before a couple of more singles and the album is released. If the same thing happens to Koda like it did to f.ex ai and mika, and ayu's single sales are more or less consistent, ayu willstill be the top single selling artist, because all ayu singles tend to sell more or less a very well. (remember that B&D was the fourth single of 2005, making the total single sales for ayu in that year even higher than for 2004) If koda consistently has sales like koi no tsubomi with her normal singles, then I agree that her position as most selling female is "threatened". Of course it is bad news in general that her singles are moving down the yearly chart (which is probably what sunshine slayer ment, right??).

andre2907 1st August 2006 06:38 PM

^ Ai Otsuka is still selling very well and her singles have very consistent sales, with two since Sakuranbo going over 300k (SMILY and Planetarium).

I don't think the mods do a bad job. I tought the way the whole situation was handled was a little irresponsable, but another mod replied me very nicely when I explained to him the whole deal (the one who locked my topic wasn't very nice 'tho) and I think most of them do a nice work.

Yes,indeed. But sales are still not higher than ayu's. If ayu's sales go down even more and ai's continue growing though, ai might surpass ayu, but as for now she hasen't. A year ago ai seemed like the strongest competitor to ayu, but now Koda is also.

Err, maybe that's because most women in Japan are less than 5'5" and Western women are taller? It's proper height-weight proportions... :) And it's not just in Japan... it's in most of asia too, hong kong, singapore, malaysia, thailand, etc. etc... standards of beauty do somehow reflect cultural and physical realities...

thanks for the sales numbers...I don't think it's bad news for ayu, because I don't think she has to prove anything anymore (she's been around for eight years - a lifetime in Jpop -, she's multi-award-winning and has sold more than enough). And she's only been releasing regular singles. but koda kumi... hottest artist of the moment, most hyped single of the year (well, along with Kat-tun's), and she didn't even get the weekly number 1 with a quadruple A-side. That's pretty bleak.

Koda Kumi's first week sales are the biggest for a female artist since 2003. I think actual sales are much more important than positions, don't you?

But even someone who was say around 5'3" or 5'4" and weighed more than maybe 115-120, would be considered fat, but wouldn't be in other cultures such as America is what I'm saying.

I've seen the early pics of Koda and I would have never classified her as "fat."

Psychotic_X 1st August 2006 10:48 PM

Big deal if she didn't get #1, coming so close to KinKi Kids is a major achievement already!!! If you look at the sales... its like

1. 239k
2. 207
3. 50k

that's a 150k+ gap... I think Kuu's proven herself don't you?! You guys have to take it into account... KinKi Kids have been around for like decades, Kuu's been around for 6 years, 5 of which were unnoticed and 1 year of being noticed. I think we should commend her for her hard work and for getting to this level...

Even Oricon was unsure, they worded the news article carefully saying "it is a matter of time before they get their 23rd consecutive single"... unlike with Ayu's BB and KAT-TUN where they said it will "definately" take the #1 spot.... Kuu posing such a threat to such a big name in Japan is already amazing, let's just be happy rather than saying it "bleak" for not selling as well because it was a 4-A Side single

shadow*puppet 1st August 2006 11:14 PM

i think it's definitely a big deal given the following things:

1. koda kumi is the hottest jpop artist right now (arguably)
2. the single is a quadruple a-side single. that's the equivalent of mr. children's four dimensions single and every little thing's untitled 4 ballads. almost all 4 a-side singles by reasonably very popular artists in the past have reached the weekly number one. plus, koda kumi's single has bonus intro, interlude, and outro tracks.
3. her main competition was a single with 2 b-sides (i think) from artists who aren't as big as she is now (especially with the success of second session)
4. the single was heavily promoted and marketed, almost to the point of insanity

in theory, koda kumi should have taken the top spot.

i can understand koi no tsubomi not taking the top spot (it had only one a-side and three tracks in total)... but not 4 hot wave's performance.

again I am not criticizing koda kumi. i am just trying to express why i'm surprised and why i think this is not a good thing for her career...

andre2907 - given all the above, i think the positions are more important especially since sales this year seem lower than previous years :) but we have to see how the single performs in the long run... if it sells as well as glamorous sky, then all is well...

andre2907 - given all the above, i think the positions are more important especially since sales this year seem lower than previous years :) but we have to see how the single performs in the long run... if it sells as well as glamorous sky, then all is well...

It's a cute explanation, but don't make any sense because in no way positions are more important than sales and you're wrong if you think it is. Sorry for sounding rude, but it's true. If Koda's first best album (that sold 1.7 million) didn't reach 1, it would still be a hit. AVEX don't care how much the album sold, they care for actual sales. After the initial week, do you think they were very desperate because Ayu's A BEST didn't reach Number in week one? I don't think so.

Taking that into consideration (the fact sales seems lower than previous years), Koda's sales are very very big.

Anyway, it doesn't matter if it's 1 or not. Sakuranbo never hit one. What really matter is how much it sold in the long run...

You forget one thing though, when ayumi and a lot of other female artists had their primes (few females has that now..) the female solo artists were the its. Now they are in the background of the boys. She isen't the hottest right now, she's probably the hottest female solo singer. And the market for solo female singers isen't that good. From a sales point of view a lot of acts are "hotter" than her.

On a different note though, if this single has the staying power of the average morning musume single... It's not so good. I don't really knowabout how much wow-promotion it has gooten, because i'm not in japan, but it probably won't have the same staying power as koi no tsubomi if what everyone is writing is true.

Generally I agree with what you are saying though, I don't know how much the common japanese care for sales and details like that. This is koda's most anticipated single ever and it fails to hit number one, like shadowpuppet wrote.

Well, there's a big difference. If you look at those they are sleeper hits. In addition to a good tie up=P a sleeper hit is probably the best way to secure your next release in the chart. 4 hot wave will probably not be a sleeper hit. Not many artists I can think of had many sleeper hits, it's usually one and then the next release sells well. A sleeper hit is noticed as the weeks progress and that's how many get to know it and the artist. 4 Hot wave if it turns out to not be a sleeper hit and stays in the top 20 for like 4 weeks will still be a single that debuted in 2 and stayed in the chart for 4 weeks (this is just a theoretical number, I have no clue at all how it will do, and I don't bother trying to predict it.) It will get some extra publicity for appearing in the yearly top chart, sure. But to take suki sugite baka mitai, the lowest seling number one in oricon history, it was still played at kouhaku, and was heard by as many people as the number one hit of the week as any other number one song would. So because just because it sells a lot doesen't mean it'll get a lot more attention before the yearly chart arrives.

anyway. just to put it out there, I'm not a jealous ayu fan, and i don't dislike Koda Kumi. I'm not a fan of her ero kakkoi image, and I don't think her music is SPECTACULAR, but i do enjoy some of her songs. no hard feelings if i put off any kuu fans. thanks for posting this link.

-WHEW!-

I agree. I`m not a big fan of Kuu`s ero kakkoi style, but she`s natural and normal and she really has worked hard to get to where she is. Yeah and most likely she won`t let go of the whole ero kakkoi thing, but she`s very original and I do enjoy her music. I also enjoy her dance moves. They`re very unique. Yes I`m happy for Kuu too. She`s not ero kakkoi in real life. That`s just her "entertainment" image if you will.

Your not taking into account the power of Johnny's. :) Kinki Kids have never had a single that didn't debut at #1; they are actually in the Guinness Book of World Records - there's a reason for that. :yes

I always thought the sales would be close, but in the end I was sure Kinki was going to get #1.

3. her main competition was a single with 2 b-sides (i think) from artists who aren't as big as she is now (especially with the success of second session)
4. the single was heavily promoted and marketed, almost to the point of insanity

1. Koda Kumi is definitely not the hottest artist in the Jpop scene. My senses tell me it's strongly KAT-TUN this year.

2. Yes, but these artists didn't have competition that Kuu had. Also, they were already well established in the industry, and labels already know that they have to avoid them.

3. No, her main commpetitor was not 'a single with 2 b-sides from artists who arn't as big as she is'. Her main competitor was a group that has been out at least 8-9 years, and all their singles have placed #1 since 1997. And not to mention, the word 'Johnny's'; that word alone boosts sales. I think you are really underestimating the power of a) fangirls, housewives b) KinKi Kids themselves and c) Johnny's Entertainment as a whole. There is a reason why Johnny's is by far the largest talent agency in Japan and a reason why Johnny Kitagawa is one of the most powerful men in the entertainment industry.

4. Regardless of the promotion that '4 hot wave' had, KinKi (and other well established Johnny's like SMAP) fans still overpower anything and anyone when it comes down to singles. Plus, they perform in their own TV shows which are high rated itself.

Kuu was never the favourite to win. KinKi was always the favourite. So in theory, KinKi is supposed to win and they have.

I don't understand how her not getting #1 is not good for your career. Hikki has singles that haven't hit #1 and her career is doing just fine. BoA has only 1 #1 single and her career is doing well, Otuska Ai only has 2 and her popularity is growing basically with each single release.

Ranks arn't really all that important. STEP you/is this LOVE? placed 19th on the yearly charts, ranking lower than INSPIRE and ranked the same as CAROLS yet STEP you/is this LOVE? sold more than INSPIRE and CAROLS.
***
About the Otsuka Ai thing, I think her sales are growing by each release. So far she's matched/outsold Ayu twice. Sakuranbo>No way to say and Planetarium = fairyland.

~Matt~ 2nd August 2006 04:19 AM

^^Yea yea lol..i heard this interview in HF too.=P

Bazaa 2nd August 2006 12:28 PM

Well, I must say that this interview did change my opinion about Koda. I misjudged her because of her ero-kakkoi image - she's a nice girl after all. I feel bad that she was told that she was fat and ugly, when she was just average looking.

Avex can be quite harsh with their artists, isn't it? They were a bit with Ayumi on that "A Best" time...

Alessia_Tateno 2nd August 2006 05:37 PM

What did they do to Ayu on her A best time?
And yeah Avex seems to be very severe with their artists..

~Matt~ 2nd August 2006 10:09 PM

But they (avex) always support their artists, even if they're going not so well...

in the beginning avex kept releasing singles and albums of kumi even when she was failing in the charts and sales with every release

Well I think that's obvious. She was signed on a contract and was still getting paid no matter if she sold well or not. They had to at least use her...

*Petit* 3rd August 2006 01:18 AM

Koda was the one desperately wanting to be a singer remember? Avex was the only one willing to pick her up at all. Like in most fields of life it's about giving and taking. Koda isen't a victim or anything, think of everything she can thank avex for (which is.. hmm, every tie in she had to make her popular (who knows where she would've been without cutey honey), composers, arrangers and um, even the idea of her ero-kakkoi image which has gotten the blame for a lot of her popularity now). I'm not saying it's good or whatever, but that's the business. Some busienss' are harder than other, showbusiness being one of the hardest. And koda was the one desperately wanting to be in it. I'm sure she's thankful for her popularity now, at least she should be. Because along the way there are so many people helping out. and those people are hired by avex.

andre2907 3rd August 2006 07:01 PM

^ I agree. Plus, Koda Kumi story is one of the few with a happy ending. Most just work work work and never succeed.

Anyway, I don't think AVEX forcing Ayu to release an "A BEST" is that shocking. And seeing how she agreed to do billions of magazine covers, I think she didn't care as much as she said. And I don't believe at all when she said she tought it was her last album. Hello!? There's no way she would go out of AVEX in 2001, she was half of their profits...

Well there is the possiblity that she didn't want to re-sign the contract and continue singing.

devilayu 4th August 2006 12:54 AM

Well, I just watched the parts of the video and there doesn't seem to be anything too polarizing in it so far (will wait to see the 2nd part).

As Psychotic_X said, Matsuura said that Kuu was chubby but nothing else that is that controvesial. Everything so far looks like any other music documentary.

evolusean 4th August 2006 03:02 AM

^ It's true. The video really isn't as scandalous as most people would have it. Max Matsuura, as much as I'm not sure if I particularly care for him or not, said nothing horrible, and the terms "very fat" or "very ugly" were never spoken. He said she was chubby, and that's it.

As far as Avex pushing their artists, even when they aren't selling well... that's because producing artists costs millions of dollars (or 100s of millions of yen). The company ONLY makes a profit from their initial investments if the artist releases like crazy and sells well. Whereas most companies would just drop an artist if they flop, Avex's philosophy is to fabricate something of an image around them, squeeze as much out of them as possible, and then let them do whatever they want until they have new artists to make up new revenue.

~Matt~ 4th August 2006 03:03 AM

that's because the first part is not important at all...

evolusean 4th August 2006 03:24 AM

Yeah, I noticed the documentary is cut in two pieces. The 2nd isn't up on YouTube, though, is it? I'd really like to see it. Kumi is really very interesting; I like her very much as a person.

Well, there's that whole thing where a BEST is probably going to be your last album / will probably signal the end of a career.. She probably wanted to quit singing at the time of A BEST.

I don't find Koda's story at all sad or anything. I think it's mostly HER pushing herself and that's about it. D: I wonder what'd happen if Koda was on toshibaEMI or like Sony...

andre2907 4th August 2006 08:08 AM

The point is: if in 2001-2002 Ayu decided to quit, she would take Avex with her. A whole record company. And I don't believe that was really an option.

About Max, the word is "fat", but in english it can be translated as "chubby". Anyway, in my opinion, I don't think it's nice to call people fat, even as a joke, because they get mad, unless they have a big sense of humor (most people don't). It's not very nice to say that she was fat, as a joke or not (and it wasn't a joke, because of course we know that's AVEX opinion), after all she had inferiority complex for a long time (the first-part is all about how unhappy she was when she was "fat"). So Max wasn't nice, anyway, it isn't ok to call people fat "as a joke".

hmm yeah i agree, but the thing about Max calling her fat is just rude, calling anyone fat is rude, when someone who u don't know relli well says your "fat" especially from a guy it's relli hard to take it off their mind, so Max is just an ass

truehappiness 4th August 2006 09:36 AM

Well think about it..

Would you want to put someone on TV who most of avex probably thought was chubby? [I'm sure Max wasn't alone in his thoughts] And even then if you put them on TV, they probably wouldn't sell much anyway...?

I think it was in order to save money even though it was a bit 'rude' D:

andre2907 4th August 2006 06:58 PM

she said that she did those covers because even though she didn't want to produce the best album, she felt that she had to give it a "presentation" for what it was -- she felt that regardless of whether or not she wanted to do it, she ought to give the album as much as she could. that was in the NTV interview

If Kuu was at toshibaEMI or Sony, it would probably be the same way...Except they probably would have dropped her a LONG time ago because of her sales. thing is, the whole BEST album thing isn't just with avex. Hikki said that she was pissed off at toshibaEMI because they went ahead and produced her BEST album without even consulting her. It was already ready to go on the market before she even knew about it -- she only had a little bit of time to tack on that silly quote on the front of it...there's a lot of trouble between Hikki and her label right now. They're apparently pissed at her because she doesn't consult them over anything anymore. It's not just avex where artists have problems...it's just avex is the most public about them. I'm sure if Hikki did an interview and told about toshibaEMI, people would think the same way about them as they do about avex. Avex does seem like quite the ass-kicker, though.

Presently yes, but that's because Koda is currently riding on a wave of popularity driven by ero-images and the boost given by the 12-singles / BESTs. I don't think she'll consistently beat Ayu though..

It was the tie-in with the just-as-sexual Cutey Honey. HAVE YOU SEEN AN EPISODE OF IT? O_O

The point I'm trying to get across is, that if Koda Kumi is "only" popular because she has a sexy image, then why did those singles fail?!

Yes, it helped but her music is good and her singing has improved...

I was told that Japanese are kind of like that. As in, they’ll tell you if they think you’re fat. My old Japanese teacher was teaching English in Japan and a teacher told her, “Michelle, You’re looking kind of fat now.” I don’t think it’s meant to be like “pig” and it’s just a cultural misunderstanding for us? Koda obviously wasn’t fat, she had a chubby face but I’d hardly say she was fat.

Kuu has also failed in every aspect compared to Hamasaki (at many points). If not even more so. You cant even compare artist anymore. They have different sounds and even know people keep talking about how sales for everyone in general has dropped. I think Kuu has shown that she knows how to make a come back though. Hamasaki has hardly faced threatening sales and needed to make some kind of huge come back.

It’s one thing to succeed and another thing to succeed, fail and then succeed again. Kuu beats Hamasaki on that level.

No, you see if the person that was responsible for 43% of avex income would leave shareholders would take their money and put it into whatever company that would pick ayu up, or some othe rmusic campany. So Avex shares would plunge leaving the company almost bankrupted. The same thing even almost happened in 2004 when ayu's sales were lower. And that means that a lot of talented people would have to leave avex ecause they coudeln't pay them . There obiously are a lot of talented people working with /in avex on marketing and a lot fo other tings.

And that means that a lot of talented people would have to leave avex ecause they coudeln't pay them . There obiously are a lot of talented people working with /in avex on marketing and a lot fo other tings.

Maybe, but Avex cant be dipendent on Ayu, before her Avex was on too, with Namie and other artists so they can live without her too...

Hamasaki has hardly faced threatening sales and needed to make some kind of huge come back.

It’s one thing to succeed and another thing to succeed, fail and then succeed again. Kuu beats Hamasaki on that level.

I agree ^^

The point I'm trying to get across is, that if Koda Kumi is "only" popular because she has a sexy image, then why did those singles fail?!

those singles didn't fail because of the sexy image, those singles failed because they weren't any good. :innocent
Her sexy image isn't the only reason she's popular, but lets be honest its good selling power. And Avex will exploit that. :shrug Its not necessarily a bad thing, so why are you annoyed?

they were alright... There were some singles she released afterwards that weren't that great either...

I'm annoyed because people think Kuu is simply popular because she took on the sexy image.. That's partly true but mainly its her music.. her music got better so she got better sales... I was just pointing it out to those who are just ignorant and just base what they see on her looks...

Agree, its true the ero-kakkoi image helped her but her music improved also. it becomes more and more good ^^ back then there were singles not so good...and people who think she is famous ONLY because of the sexy image makes me very very angry..and trust me there are many!!

I would say yes and no. avex was doing alright without Ayu, but if all of a sudden your largest revenue maker leaves the company, obviously it will have a devestating effect on avex.

xiaou-xijiang 9th August 2006 05:09 AM

^I agree. They're spoiled now. Ayu is like their machine. She sells like crazy, and they rake in a bunch of profit. Now that they've seen what they can earn with her, they aren't gonna let her go so easily. And they probably will be fine without her because they still have good selling artists like Koda Kumi and others on the field so I don't think that they'd screw themselves over without her but with her they're making that much more.

I think the reason she is selling better now is that she took charge of her career. The Ero-Kakkoii thing certainly helped her, as she now ranks at the top of polls among the girl most Japanese guys want to sleep with, and the girl most Japanese girls want to emulate. But I think what makes her a great, well-selling artist now is really a combonation of Avex sudden willingness to promote the crap out of her, and her own recent take-charge attitude, bringing out more of a personality (whether or not it is her own) which these guys and girls can take a liking to.

Before that happened, she wasn't much more than an Idol; another doll strung around by a record company, releasing music just for the sake of having some sort of additional, underlying income, while the real stars did as they pleased.

When did she top that poll (or rather when did that poll take place?) Imo, I would've thought it was Otsuka Ai since she has a much larger male base than Kuu does.
