Music from your country!

We had this kind of thread a while ago, but I couldn't find it anymore so I decided to make a new one! ( I guess this is the right place? If not, please move it. ) The idea is to post recommendations or even Youtube links or something of bands/artists from your own country! :)

So, I'm from Finland and I will now introduce you to my new fandom, a band called Sunrise avenue!

Youtube-links:
2nd single - Romeo (don't mind about that stupid text -__- )
3rd single - Fairytale gone bad

+ Official site - MySpace

immel 4th September 2006 07:40 PM

I can't upload anything because I think it's pretty licensed in the US... but you all know ABBA I suspect ;).

CREA.tive 4th September 2006 07:42 PM

I'm from Quebec (Canada). I think that everyone listened at least once to Celine Dion though;)

immel 4th September 2006 07:47 PM

From Sweden there's also the lesser known artists/bands...

For pop/rock we have Gyllene Tider (Golden Times) and Carola who are, or have been, pretty popular. For Hip Hop we have Kent, Fronda and tons more... Swedish hip hop is funny, and it can be really good even though I don't enjoy it much.

I belive a lot of people know about Roxette, some of the band members in Roxette is the same as in Gyllene Tider.

ayu1m 4th September 2006 07:53 PM

^I've listened Petter sometimes, I like swedish as a language used in rap/hip-hop :yes

And from my country there are few popular bands who have had success in US/Europe

Him, you should know it lol and The Rasmus in Germany at least :b

I think there are couple more but I dont listen to finnish music so I cant remember :x

immel 4th September 2006 07:56 PM

Yes, it actually sounds really good, and I forgot about Petter, I knew there was one of the bigger artists I had forgotten the name of :).

Some of my favourite bands happen to be finnish, Sonata Arctica, Nightwish... though they sing in English.

Cyria 4th September 2006 08:05 PM

Aren't one or two members of Kent Sweden Finns or something like that? Isn't that the name of a rockish band that sings in Swedish?

Music from my country, well, I love Nightwish and I'm glad they released five wonderful albums before Tarja left and the tabloid !drama! started. Maybe YouTube has their great cover of Gary Moore's Over the Hills and Far Away?

Nylon Beat is brought up every once in a while because SES (Korea) covered one of their songs. They started out as a terribly commercial girl duo but ended up being pretty good.

ayu1m 4th September 2006 08:07 PM

^I think it's a Swedish band but it has 1 or 2 members from Finland o.O

But the main band is Swedish or something..?

immel 4th September 2006 08:09 PM

I don't know :f...

Over the Hills and Far Away is a great song :yes.

My country doesn't have music. All you find in music stores here is crap.

ayu1m 4th September 2006 11:18 PM

^poor you, your country must be very boring place to live in :(

alt.total-loser 4th September 2006 11:19 PM

Here in Cucumber Land we have random rap. And the band Greenday. Which I don't like.

Dustie 5th September 2006 12:30 PM

Listen and let your ears be pwned by Edyta's voice.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfsKolaMhzg - To nie ja bylam Ewa [It wasn't me who was Eve]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCKUfLXduXg - One and One
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZoMqIvJce1s - theme song from Pocachontas [Polish], it's a bit out of sync...

Most of her English songs suck. And so does everything else about her career, except for her voice and appearance. For the years, the way she's been managed is a disaster.

immel 5th September 2006 12:40 PM

this post reminded me about another Swedish artist that's also a bit popular internationally, she is called Robyn. If you can, make sure to listen to her songs Be Mine and Who's That Girl, they are excellent if you like catchy, a bit retro, pop.

emi♡ 5th September 2006 12:46 PM

hmmm...i live in America so...yeah....*crap* :laugh,,,with a few exceptions of course...I would recommend...Tool....system of a down (though I like their older works better)....hmm...i can't think of any now...

(okej okej I'm going to sleep)

ayu1m 5th September 2006 01:33 PM

^System of a down o.O

Are they from States, coz atleast the singer is like half Albanian or something..?

"okej" is how you write the pronounciation of "O.K." in Polish!

In Swedish aswell ;).

More Swedish bands that are quite known, make good music and sing in english are:

The Cardigans
The Ark

Both of them are really worth a try :yes.

Aga-chan 5th September 2006 09:05 PM

Wow~! The perfect thread for me. *_* I love discovering music from different countries. <3

I actually don't like Edyta THAT much. She has a great voice and nice songs, but I liked her earlier personality more... ._. So I share some other Polish songs. ^^

http://youtube.com/watch?v=gW6iMM3Rsvg
Natalia Kukulska: I L O V E this song. And the lyrics are A M A Z I N G (for those who understand Polish). They reflect my own way of thinking well.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=0pc30-KebmA
SiStars: From their second album, which in my opinion is better than their first. MUCH BETTER. No guest-rappers, less tracks... They won the EMAs for "Best Polish Act" twice. I like how the lyrics seem to talk about a woman, but are in fact about music.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=dZQX7USWQXQ
Anna Maria Jopek: With Pat Metheny. I don't know the original tune, just this version (if there's any difference). It's a rather calm song with driving lyrics. (She also recorded an all-English album called "Secret".)

Hopefully you'll like it and enjoy! ^.^

immel 5th September 2006 09:17 PM

I figured I should post some links to the music I mention so that people don't overlook the artists, because some of their songs are simply great :).

Here's some of The Arks' best songs, almost all of their songs are good, but here's some that I found the PVs of:

It Takes a Fool to Remain Sane

Father of a Son (Title explanation: the vocalist is gay)

Let Your Body Decide (a personal favourite)

Robyn
Be Mine!

Who's That Girl (I only found a AMV of it, I don't think it's got a PV)

Piccolo 5th September 2006 09:27 PM

I happen to enjoy Minh Tuyet's stuff...

Greenday's kinda... annoying. Honestly I don't have anything to recommend. >__> Music here pretty much sucks.

I'm from the US, and I can't post our music xD

emi♡ 5th September 2006 11:21 PM

^^recommendations!!!

I also like Journey....because...man...Steve perry (right?) god he can sing like...just...insane.

i like how swedish/polish/german/others are all so close together...I feel like I know like 5 languages in one (even thought I don't completely know swedish at all yet :laugh).

seriously...Journey...I think it's a bit of an acquired taste if you are not used to that style of music...but his voice just captivates...omg...he's amazing.

Swedish is like a mix of German and English to me... it's the same family/genre/smth of languages, so it's quite right... As for Polish, it's different family, along with Slovakian, Czech, Russian and few others from Eastern Europe.

I think I should start learning some Swedish through e-mail or something again... :P

immel 6th September 2006 07:39 PM

The Latin family, French, German, Swedish, Italian, Spanish (and more~) are all based on Latin, thus often sounding very similar, sharing many words.

German was very popular to speak here during like the 19th century, that left heavy tracks in our language.

We have quite a number of words that's borrowed from English aswell, and they grow in numbers steadily as the English education here in Sweden start really early and is very serious.

A lot of vietnamese songs are covers of other songs, or variants of covers. I honestly don't know which are covers or not because the credits are random a lot of the time. Also, from what I've heard, and I've heard a lot, vietnamese songs are hit or miss to me. I like the modern stuff. The country/traditional stuff is not my favorite type of music. But anyways.. more of her stuff since she's the only person I'm really familiar with...

I absolutely hate her makeup and hair in the video... she looks like a walking Barbie doll, seriously! Nice voice, though the song is kinda bland... I hope she comes up with something more original than such a foreseenable pop.

As for A-Teens, I used to love them, lol :D Anyone there have their 3rd/4th album [Pop 'Till you drop/New Arrival] to share? :D

LacusClyne 9th September 2006 04:34 AM

US music isn't really worth promoting, but i'll list some artists i lke outside of the US. Give em a listen, but don't criticize me because i like them, i don't have to explain why, i just do.

Lisa Scott-Lee
Marie Serneholt
The Veronicas
Within Temptation
Shaznay lewis
Faye Wong (one of the best voices in the world)
Sugababes
Girls Aloud

Meh that's the majority of my fav bands, and yes, i'm a pop fanatic.

(sarcasm start)

So obviously I must be a teeny bopper with no brain who just listens to what is fed to me, because nobody on this planet would like pop music because it's actually good.

Obey her.

As for Estonia, we have some good and some not so good music here.

Ines
She represented Estonia at ESC in 2000 and placed 4th, after that her label "forgot about her". She got a new deal and released a new album in 2004 which had many radio hits. It sold well, thanks to being a host of numerous TV shows. At the end of 2005, a new album was released, this time she wrote everything. It contained a lot of well-known radio hits including her entry to Eurovision 2006, "Iseendale" ("For Myself"). I found a video on YouTube, check it out of you're interested.

Rosette - Crushed

It's pretty much how I'm feeling right now =\

Crushed,
By the sweetest lips I've never kissed
And your fingertips and the
warmest touch I've always missed
Crushed,
By the softest hands I've never held
Probably never tell,
You're the strongest love
that I've ever felt
Crushed,
That I haven't ever let you know
How it always goes
'Cause I lose my nerve
whenever you get close
And so I'm left,
Short of breath
With that heavy feeling in my chest
Baby, I'm so crushed

Ayu, you r ayu!!!
Unlike you m2yu , Ayu means a Fool in our language. . . but which could also mean that a person has brilliant and creative mind like an artist . . I think that definition suit Ayu . . cos I'm Ayu fan .
I feel so embarrassed to show music form my country because most of them are copy form the other countries. Thank god , a little know about Ayu so they haven't copy her music yet.

Thai music sounds really hot!!

So I'll just list some of my favourite songs from Germany...

Reamonn - Serpentine
this sometimes makes me cry. the singer is Irish, by the way.
Ich & Ich - Stark ("strong")
this is a great, strong ballad!! very popular right now in Germany.
Killerpilze - Liebmichhassmich ("lovemehateme")
such a funny video xDDD
Wir sind Helden - Nur ein Wort ("just one word")
such a great video!
Karpatenhund - Gegen den Rest ("against the rest")
still rather unknown band, but this song ROCKS!!
Sportfreunde Stiller - Alles Roger ("everything roger")
so crazy xDDD the lyrics are soooo funny. pity you won't understand them >_<
Jenna + Ron - Jung und willig ("young and willing")
pretty strange but cool xDD

Honestly, I dislike 99% of the music of my country. It's terrible. I just like:

- Rouge (died girls-band trying to be the brazilian spice girls)
- Sandy & Junior
- S.N.Z. (their song Nothing's Gonna Change My Love For You, featured in their english album rocks)

caio.taiko 29th December 2007 05:44 AM

^
Yeah, they aren't much good... i liked Sandy&Junior when I was like 10, or something...
Ivete Sangalo has some nice songs, and she is a good singer

But yeah, I'm not a big fan of brazilian music either...

TITANIC 29th December 2007 04:19 PM

I miss this thread. :(

Maemi 17th January 2010 11:54 PM

My country music is currently... a crap. People mostly listen to turbo folk and they don't know for better :( But our music in the 90s used to be very beautiful (from both Croatia and Serbia) so I'll post some :) Please listen to and judge :)

Magazin is the pop band from Croatia, and their singer Jelena Rozga has a beautiful voice, too bad she's not the part of the group anymore :)
Spoiler:

Colonia is also the pop/dance band from Croatia. Kinki Kids covered their song Deja Vu into Junetsu :)
Spoiler:

And some other songs I like...

Yooku 19th January 2010 05:15 PM

^ Joensuu 1685 for example debuted in 2008 and Hanna Marsh participated in the 2008 Finland's Eurovision Song Contest prequalification. Maybe they are kinda new or at least even Finnish people don't know much about some of them...it's a pity. :(

nemesisyume 19th January 2010 05:19 PM

^as seen in my post I'm pretty out of any new music in finland
I like the good old ones LMAO
I only follow PMMP
