Bossa Nova music help?

Yeah, I found out. I love this music. It's the kind of stuff I hear in some hotels, cafes and elevators. And also shopping malls. Or bakeries. Whatever. I download some Sergio Mendes and Lisa Ono stuff. The music is SO GOOD. It's like stirring tea.

Can someone help and gove recommendations and stuff? All help greatly appreciated. Anyone has the slightest idea about bossa nova music? The only info I got was Wikipedia and the scientific theoretical garble.

You can hear that kond of music or something like it in Koda's "A Cup Of Milk Tea" version of Koi no Tsubomi which is bloody frickin awesome.

Keishi 20th September 2006 02:25 PM

MC!!!
If Norrel & Christina were separated at birth, then we were too XD

COZ I LOVE BOSSANOVA MUSIC XD XD XD
Btw, bossanova is a sub-genre to jazz, so if you like bossanova, you will like jazz. I can't differentiate these two, but they sounds similar to me.

I have some bossa nova collections here and I'd be happy to share with you. :D I think I can upload them this weekend after school.

But if you can't wait and already want to start up your P2P Program, then I'd recommend these:
Shiroi Take she's a japanese artist from GIZA label. She has some touching acoustic ballads & slow pop music, but she slipped (lots of) jazz & bossanova music :D :D :D

take a look at The note of my twenty years, her second Indies cover album. She covered lots of classic jazz/bossa nova tracks from famous artist.
01. The Girl from Ipanema (Original Artist: Antonio Carlos Jobim)
02. Groovin' (OA: The Rascals)
03. Desafinado (OA: Antonio Carlos Jobim)
04. This Masquerade (OA: Leon Russel)
05. Aruanda (OA: Astrud Gilberto)
06. Time After Time (OA: Cyndi Lauper)

Some of her second tune ~Sekai Tomete~ official album also has some jazz/bossanova music, although I don't really recommend this.

Btw some of Shiina Ringo's & Nakashima Mika's songs is also influenced by Jazz. I think you've known Mika's already. Get her LOVE album.
For Shiina Ringo
Rinne Highlight, B-side from Honnou single
and her Baishou Ecstasy Live DVD, in which she performed her songs , orchestrated and rendered in Jazz/Bossanova tunes.
For her Tokyo Jihen works
Tasogare Naki & Keshou Naoshi. The rest of the tracks, which is from their ADULT albums, had Rock influenced Jazz, & some electronica beats.
Her brother, Shiina Junpei also makes bossanova music. Check out his self-titled album, Shiina Junpei.

paris match
Japanese jazz band from the Victor label and under-rated most of the time by mainstream listener. In fact, they are a jazz band that has some bossa / lounge-ish influence. In my opinion, all albums of them will do as great recommendations. My first album from them was PM2, but my favorite is QUATTRO album. :D
JPM has their albums uploaded in Japanese Urban Music > The Jazz/Downtempo Discussion Thread.

orange pekoe
similar to paris match, but they are more happy jazz, and definetely will suit your bossanova taste. :D :D :D
(Yeah, bossanova is happier jazz, I think. XD CMIIW)

Some YouTube links for paris match that I posted when AyuHoney requested for a new recommendations. I can't find orange pekoe's though. >.<

For paris match, I recommend STARS & 太陽の接吻 (キス) / Taiyou no Seppun (KISS), CAMELLIA, LET'S STAY TOGETHER, from ♭5 (FLAT FIVE) album.
KISS from PM2 album is not a bad choice too, or deep inside from typeIII album. And SILENT NIGHT from their Christmas mini-album, SONG FOR YOU
paris match's music is jazz with lounge/chill-out influence,
while orange pekoe's music is mostly happy, trumpet-instruments jazz.

For orange pekoe, I recommend getting their honeysuckle single or just Modern Lights album.

Those are eastern musicians.
For western, I do recommend Diana Krall. That's it.
She plays piano and deliver songs with her unique & soothing vocal. The Look of Love album is my recommendation.
For tracks, I Miss You So & Gentle Rain from Love Scenes album.
Let's Fall In Love from When I Look In Your Eyes

Also check out Kenny James Trio's rendition of Utada Hikaru's songs.

And by the way, Antonio Carlos Jobim for more jazz stuffs.

Mad_Cactuar 20th September 2006 03:42 PM

WOW. WOW. WOW. I can't read all finish today. Thanks, I'm definitely checking these out later!

Keishi 20th September 2006 03:56 PM

Sure. :D

If you need my help, let me know. :D

Mad_Cactuar 20th September 2006 10:28 PM

Damn, none of them appear on LimeWire. :dead2 I guess I'll have to wait for your uploads then. I'm more inclined towards English music, so if you have English stuff, please upload, alright? :D Err, no Diana Krall though. I think she's more of a jazz artist stuck to a piano. I don't like her voice. Norah Jones is jazz too I think.

I think bossa nova and jazz differ from their instrument usage and mood. Jazz is kind of somber to me while bossa nova sounds very commercial and uplifting. Bossa nova also sounds more uptempo and Brazillian I guess. Lisa Ono stuff is definitely bossa nova, she's quite awesome. I love all her songs I found so far. She also has "The girl from Ipanema".

I get confused deciding whether something is jazz, soul or R&B though.

Classification!
Mika Nakashima:
Seppun - reggae? dance? or R&B? jazz?
Koishikute - soul? pop? R&B? reggae?
Carrot & Whip - pop? dance? reggae? R&B? soul? bossa nova?
Fake - jazz? R&B?

p3ayu 20th September 2006 11:20 PM

The Korean group Clazziquai has some bossa nova type music as well. One song that comes to mind in particular is the song Bossa Nova^^

Keishi 21st September 2006 03:39 AM

CLAZZIQUAI! YEAH XD
how could I forgot them XD

and btw, the title is not boosanova, but Novabossa, from Instant Pig album. Another version is its bonus track Cat Bossa.

Ah I see. Ok, I thik I can upload the stuffs tonight. And you only want Western artist? Since I only have Kenny James Trio's stuffs. :cry
And can you use torrent?
I think I can look for you some torrents for bossa nova music.
Have you ever heard of the world music compilation company, "Putumayo"? They also have some compilations on bossanova music.

Seppun is reggae.
Koishikute is reggae.
Carrot & Whip is reggae.
FAKE is jazz.

That would be quite scary.

I actually think I like this type of music if i'm thinking of it correctly. Just too lazy to look up.

Keishi 21st September 2006 05:49 AM

^ you can recommend something? Since I'm looking for a new bossanova artist too.

Yep, I can use torrents. No, Japanese stuff is alright too, just give me the torrent links. :yes It's just easier for me to purchase English music. Although I don't think they sell bossa noca stuff nearby.

I always thought Putumayo was a group. o__o I'mma scour P2P for some of em.

LEOyumi 21st September 2006 02:32 PM

I love Bossa Nova as well! =D~
Well, let me name some songs here:

~ Kelly Clarkson - Thankful
~ Rachel Stevens - Blue Afternoon (<3)
~ Shiina Ringo - Aozora

Kelly's song is note pure bossa, I think. But it's really similar to a bossa, so you can see how it influences the song ^_^

Keishi 21st September 2006 03:16 PM

Wasn't Kelly's music rock?
Ah, Thankful album has some jazzy tracks >w< like "What's Up Lonely" & "Thankful" and....eh? I think that's all XD

MC, Putumayo is a record label. XD XD
It specifies in world traditional music genre that is lesser-known like Asia & Africa. Some include bossanova, lounge, dance, samba, and stuffs. :D

Oh, and you might wanna try Audiophile's stuffs. They're also like Putumayo, but they specifies in Jazz. Some jazz musician in that album also has some bossanova tracks so you won't regret buying "anything" from them. Yes. Audiophile is a special record label where any artist in that record label is good. Period. And I'm not exaggerating (sp?) XD

I have some friends uploaded me already some jazz/bossanova albums on other forum, I'll share them with you via PM in a few minutes.

Ah yes, it is indeed Novabossa. My mistake:)

THIS SONG IS LOVE. I was just listening to Funky Dory yesterday, like usual I skipped most of the tracks. But the one that stood out most was "Blue Afternoon" and "Silk". "Blue Afternoon" is my fave track ever from that CD ever since I bought it. Yes, it has an urban bossa nova feel.

I downloaded some Putumayo tracks but they're all in weird languages I don't speak or understand. :dead2 And they never name their albums by genre, it's always weird names. "Music From the Coffee Lands" wasn't even bossa nova, but that makes sense.

I'm downloading yer stuff CK, will comment much later. There's lotsa stuff there. :yes Sankyuu very much.

No, i'm afraid I can't. The only person I knew who you've mentioned in this thread is Shiina Ringo, and as awesome is she is I still haven't been able to grasp on liking her music that much. :shrug It doesn't seem Bossa Nova to me, as far as I've heard.

By the way none of Mika's material is Bossa Nova.

ImpactBreaker 22nd September 2006 04:10 AM

Listen to Brazillian music. Bossa Nova is all around brazillian roots. After all it was created in Brazil. The name that comes to my mind would be "Tom Jobim". Bossa Nova makes me think so much about Rio De Janeiro LOL

Well you should definitely listen to Every Little Thing~The Remixes III~ something rice plantation or whatever..... That CD is pure bossa nova. A lot of people find that album weird ahahha I think the songs are relaxing and cafe :)
Another good JPOP Bossa Nova song is shiina ringo Aozora. That one kicks ass. It's her best song btw.

Keishi 22nd September 2006 07:54 AM

ELT has bossanova songs? I gotta get this. XD

wait which Ringo's album has Aozora?

It's a b-side song from the "Honnou" single. Her b-side material can be oh soooo much better than her a-side material. I've always wondered why.....

Keishi 22nd September 2006 02:40 PM

Aww, I don't have B-sides....mind sharing Aozora with me?

Will have to find my copy of Funky Dory and listen to those songs again! Don't listen to FD anymore as Come & Get It is miles better!

I KNOW! I downloaded the tracks some time ago and they were SO AWESOME. "So Good", "I Said Never Again", "Nothing Good About This Goodbye", "Negotiate With Love", blah blah are PERFECTION. But since it wasn't a success, no worldwide release was issued. That means, I'M DOOMED to never get that CD. :weep

Keishi 25th September 2006 10:45 AM

Do you find my downloads suit your taste?

mi|kshake 25th September 2006 10:34 PM

Awww....hopefully Rachel's next album will do amazing and it will get a worldwide release and a tour, in which she'll sing live!

mi|kshake~

Mad_Cactuar 26th September 2006 01:28 AM

Nice Krisdayanti set, CK! So far, I find some of the uploads kinda boring.. x__x Shiina Junpei is quite ok though. Maybe I'm growing out of the bossa nova phase. And moved on to scat singing. Sorry.

Yep, milkshake, I hope she releases in the US and gets famous.

Keishi 26th September 2006 01:21 PM

Thank you. I never expect someone will even realize her here. XD

Sorry to waste your time with those uploads, though. :laugh
Btw, what is "scat singing"?

Mad_Cactuar 26th September 2006 01:49 PM

No, you didn't waste my time dude. It was education after all. :yes

Scat singing is.. I dunno how to describe it. It's a part of jazz in the 1950's to 1960's. :laugh It's fun and different, quite upbeat. Stuff Ella Fitzgerald made.

Keishi 26th September 2006 01:58 PM

Talk about Ella's, I listened to her "My Funny Valentine" yesterday. It was wayyyy to smooth XD

I've listened to lots of covers that is much better than that, in my opinion. Was she the original singer of that song?

Mad_Cactuar 26th September 2006 02:22 PM

I'm not sure though, maybe it's someone elses. Those songs are OLLDDD. :laugh I like Lisa Ono, I just found out she was #72 in HMV's list of top 100 all time artistes. #42 was Ayu, #27 was Hikki.

Keishi 26th September 2006 02:42 PM

Lol. #42? XD

Is Lisa Ono any good? I only know one song from her, Derniere Valse.
I think her voice is very unigue & soothing.

Mad_Cactuar 26th September 2006 02:59 PM

I only know her bossa nova stuff, her English is very very good. I like her lots and saw her album today but bought Justin Timberlake instead. x__x

extepan 30th October 2006 07:20 AM

bossa nova is a cool genre. it is so classy and stylish, and it is relaxing as well!

you have to check out the queen of bossa nova, Lisa Ono, who is brazilian but her ancestors are originally from Japan. she makes bossa nova songs in english, french and portuguese.
