'JEWEL' translation

Under the grey and square sky
Is filled with all kinds of desires today
But I don't lose sight of the light among them
And can walk, looking forward
Because you always show me
That there remains a purity even in a corner of this city

Breathing calmly, I looked at you
Who had fallen asleep, so exhausted
The sweet, unprotected profile
That no one in the world but me knows

One day when the sunlight poured and the wind blew gently
As if it were nothing special
I felt alone that something was changing in me
Slowly, firmly and surely

Though I wasn't sad at all, tears fell down
Because your feelings sank painfully into
The scar in the depth of my heart
And changed it into tenderness

If you come across deep sorrow
I wish you will share it with me
I'll be able to do anything for the smile
My precious treasure
My precious treasure

If it says "for my honey" in the booklet of the album we'll know for sure.

extepan 14th October 2006 05:27 PM

oh! i love the very poetic lyrics!
thanks for the excellent translation!

HiruNoKaze 14th October 2006 05:37 PM

Oh yes, forgot to say, "taisetsu na takaramono" -> "my precious treasure," made me go wahhhhhh omg repeated lyrics from RAINBOW! Wooooo. When stuff is repeated,
1. uninspirational writer
2. extra significance

And we all know surely #2 is the case... In RAINBOW, this phrase referred to a part of herself, yes? But here...seems much more external. I hope that people won't bash her for reusing this phrase verbatim because it can be a very powerful literary tool that can be used to draw comparisons and link things together very poignantly. Maybe this phrase has a special significance to her...probably does. Maybe it's something between her and her honey...;)

There is something we must remember about RAINBOW lyrics.
Is that Avex publish the song in the internet without the lyrics, so the people who had buy the disc could download it. They call the fans to write their own lyrics for RAINBOW and sent it to them, so they choose the best ones and compose the lyrics with them. This was posted a long time ago, I think.

So Ayu isn't repeat the same words, because she didn't wrote RAINBOW by herself, gotcha? ^^U

immel 14th October 2006 06:00 PM

The RAINBOW version that was released online together with the RAINBOW album didn't have any lyrics by what I know, it was just an instrumental/beta version I think.

The song came in it's full version on A BALLADS.

Terri 14th October 2006 06:08 PM

very pretty, a lot more descriptive/poetic than most of her lyrics

I believe it's been established that the notes that fans sent in served as inspiration for Ayu. I think that when it says lyrics written by Ayumi Hamasaki, it means wholly written by her. My impression of her character is that she really cares about expressing herself, and that she would not take someone else's lyrics verbatim. In other words, the lyrics to RAINBOW are still her lyrics; it just happened that in this case, she invited her fans to be a more direct source of inspiration.

Mirai Noah 14th October 2006 06:54 PM

Thanks for the translation! I love the lyrics!

sexysaucestar 14th October 2006 07:03 PM

MeMeMeChant 14th October 2006 08:51 PM

awwww.

Dustie 14th October 2006 09:01 PM

I'm starting to hate how she's repeatable recently... she used to have more variety of lyrics...

ayujarl 14th October 2006 09:10 PM

Thx for the translation. I love Ayu's writing. it does match the song itself :innocent

If you come across deep sorrow
I wish you will share it with me
I'll be able to do anything for the smile
My precious treasure
My precious treasure ...

how touching is that :littleang

I agree :( They're sweet lyrics, but she repeats this theme too much.

truehappiness 14th October 2006 09:37 PM

I think it'd be hard to have a lot of variety after 120+ songs.

Honestly, would any of us as members be able to write that many songs, each with a different theme? :|
I guess that this is an important theme to Ayu, and it probably comes up a lot when she hears the composition of a sweet ballad~ :)

I wouldn't want Ayu going all Kurogewagyuu on us.

jkm444 14th October 2006 09:55 PM

thanks for da translation!

alt.total-loser 14th October 2006 10:03 PM

At first I thought that was some kind of crazy warlord Hun-king or some crazy Japanese mythology monster. I figured out kuroge and then I looked up wagyuu and I was like OHHHHHHH I know those kanji...wait, black-haired Japanese cattle?????????? chotto mayotteru yo...

Btw repeated lyrics like this are rare, so I'm going to choose to think that there is profound meaning behind it.

Chibi_Venus 14th October 2006 10:53 PM

Amazing, as always. Thank you, masa!

Aw so sweet. Ayu has written tonnnnnes of love songs lately.

truehappiness 14th October 2006 11:56 PM

Hasn't Ayu continually said that she writes basically about two subjects?

Love and freedom or something like that..
[it was stated at DOME TOUR 2001]

BigAyuFan 15th October 2006 12:18 AM

aww this is very poetic......but im not good at un..de...code...ing poems.hmm what would it be in very easy to understand english lyric form??can anyone help??Oh and by the way thanks for the translation:D

That's the way in which I prefer thinking about it too. She has basically pronounced about that there always is meanings behind what she does. Sure, she might make mistakes and write the same thing once again, but if anyone I think she knows what she's doing when she takes her time to write a new chunk or lyric.

She knows what she's doing, and the profoundness is there.

LacusClyne 15th October 2006 02:22 AM

thanks masa

syntherella 15th October 2006 03:06 AM

Now that I think of it, those are her most popular subjects. But she has also written about lonliness (POWDER SNOW) and about "giving up" (too late). So, she has different subjects as well.

truehappiness 15th October 2006 06:43 AM

Loneliness imo is a 'lack of social freedom'~ :D

paperbag 15th October 2006 06:49 AM

^ then what about giving up and quitting? Is that "losing freedom?"

I agree. If poets can revisit the same lines, metaphors, images, and themes throughout their career, then I don't see why lyricisits can't do the same. Sylvia Plath kept writing about her father again and again. Any great artist does this. Filmmakers like Martin Scorsese have done it. How many times has he made films about violence and redemption?

Repetition is important in art. It enables an artist to move towards a fuller understanding of his/her vision. In Ayu's case, it's what love and freedom means to her. When she revisits her themes and ideas, she is not repeating herself. She is reinterpreting herself.

immel 16th October 2006 08:39 PM

...and in the end, what matters is that people simply like the music, that it's a good tune that you enjoy listening to.

I agree very much on your post. Every detail of it. And I pity the people who let petty details such as that effect what they think about the song itself.

perfectly said. Goes along with my thoughts that there should NEVER be any complaints about any of Ayu's lyrics. It's very common with some artists, but, with Ayu, I think that after 8 years and over 100 songs written by her, I've grown to almost trust her, as if, she won't, or even, she can't just follow the path of other artists. Her lyrics are always herself, and the feelings that she puts into them, you can't possibly be unhappy with them, because, to be honest, there isn't anything wrong with them in the least.
