THE MOST SELLING ALBUM OF ALL TIME

Hey guys! I was checking the charts and I was wonderin'... What is the most selling J-album of all time?

Annabelle 4th November 2006 12:20 AM

Hikaru Utada's "First Love". It sold over 7 500 000 copies :)

immel 4th November 2006 01:16 AM

^Up till todays date it's even over 10kk I've heard.

alt.total-loser 4th November 2006 01:51 AM

Go Utada, go.

Uemarasan 4th November 2006 05:43 AM

Around 8 million in Japan and 2 million overseas :)

~X2RADialbomber~ 4th November 2006 06:26 AM

That's amazing O_O Too bad she'll never get sales like that again x.x (Well you never know, I guess...)

Mad_Cactuar 4th November 2006 06:30 AM

Utada's first three albums are all in the Top 10 of "highest-selling Japanese album of all time". Not counting Precious of course.

Partino 4th November 2006 06:56 AM

and her new album is hardly making the one million. what's wrong with the people in japan. have they enough of utada??

Uemarasan 4th November 2006 08:33 AM

Ultra Blue isn't that good an album.

*Runs away from the Hikkidites*

~X2RADialbomber~ 4th November 2006 08:41 AM

^ I'd also have to agree with that statement.

I LOVE ULTRA BLUE!! I hate the originals of many of her older songs... Too RnB for me!

Halla 4th November 2006 06:26 PM

this site lists sales and is up-dated too :RIAJ Certified Million seller albums

I'm not sure how accurate it is , but it looks pretty correct to me. it has 'First Love' by Hikki as the best-selling album.

truehappiness 4th November 2006 06:32 PM

Yes and while we're at it:

Michael Jackson's Thriller is the most selling album-ever in the world..

50-60 million copies worldwide, I believe.

immel 4th November 2006 06:43 PM

^That's sick, considering Ayu is working on reaching 50mil in total sales, counted throughout her entire career with all her releases added up together.

As much as wikipedia can be trusted... they have a compiled list of the highest selling albums, world wide.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...bums_worldwide

Here's one for singles, as well.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Best-se...gles_worldwide

Don't trust those blindly, but they do actually give a quite accurate view of how it looks. No Japanese artist is even close to entering any of those two "charts".

That is what the recording companies tell us, research pretty much point in the very much exact opposite direction. Piracy has rather saved the recording industry, making the sales drop slower than they normally would.

The normal CD-R is almost an obsolete medium after so many years, just like its predecessors, vinyls, tapes etc. They all had lower and lower sales, and then a new medium to release media on was invented.

The recording companies simply need to find a new attractive way to present us their music, if they want to earn excessive amounts of money again.

None of them is certainly not running low on money, at the least.

Seriously, the whole downloading thing really helps with deciding on purchases. I've purchased a bunch of things just based on downloading.

Although I'll mourn the death of the CD market. 192kbs mp3 purchasing does not cut it for me.

It's not that I hate it. I'm a very big Hikki fan (but why, Exodus, WHY???). I just don't think it's the work of genius everyone (particularly, the Hikkidites) seems to make it out to be. I like half of the songs. The other half - eh!

That's what they meant, I think.

iTunes 192kbps rips -> not exactly the best quality..

And if CDs are eliminated... :< :<

ULTRA BLUE may not have reached a million in physical copies, but a few weeks after it was released, TOSHIBA gave a statement saying ULTRA BLUE has officially surpassed the 1 million mark in downloads and stuff. So by now, I expect like.. 3 million downloads? :shrug

I love ULTRA BLUE. :heart

truehappiness 6th November 2006 10:00 AM

Toshiba's statement was 1 million copies sold though, which was totally wrong. :B

Which is exactly the reason why the album was such a big hit. The R'n'B tune it had.

*How can you not like Hikki?:irked IMO, She's like the one who put Japan on the map.:yes I also think she (and Ayu) got other J-Pop artist such as Koda Kumi and Namie Amuro to be noticed in America*

Anyway, back to the topic.....I thought that it was The Beatles who had the Best Sold Album?

Personal taste? :) Why worry, there a LOT of people who like Hikki. Most of them are rabid to the point of irrationality, though. Hehe. It's actually refreshing to come across someone who doesn't like her. Nice change of pace.

A lot of other sources say that Thriller is the bestselling album ever in the world. I'll chalk that up to the capitalist frenzy that was the 80s.

I can't understand the CD stores that sell mp3s in 192k... well, actually I can understand them, because people doesn't know how little quality they get for the money. 320k is better, but I've seen a few stores that offer full wav's or even flac files, but at a higher price.

I don't remember what it was, 1411kbps or 1511kbps, that is full wave quality.

bluegie 6th November 2006 07:17 PM

1411Kbps... is that full wave on the cd?

192 was considered really good back in the old days because most people's hard drives were like less than 10Gbs.. it's impossible to store every single mp3 in 320kbps format. Now 192 is just a so-so quality.. 320kbps (the max we can get from mp3 rite??) should be the correct choice when downloading songs..

immel 6th November 2006 07:32 PM

320k is maximum for the MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3 codec :yes.

1411kbps is full CD quality, 44khz or 48khz, don't remember that either, lol.

It's higher if it's SACD or DVD audio.

Uemarasan 6th November 2006 08:09 PM

I love tech talk! Maybe that's because I'm a tech-idiot. Hehe.

Finally, after all these years, I know the difference between 320k and 192k! Thanks, guys :) And I thought it was only a difference in size. Just goes to show...

Now I'm a bit sad that my whole, er, "collection" is 128, 160, and 192 :( I gotta get back to work on those downloads.

immel 6th November 2006 08:23 PM

The only one that you, with todays standard home equipment/sound set-ups, can hear any clear difference on, without trained ears, is between 128k and 192k.

128 was, back in the days, considered full CD quality, but it's so far from it that you can hear the difference quite easily.

You don't have much use of anything higher than 320k mp3 unless you got a $$$$ sound set-up, heh.

I got Ayus discography in flac, though, which is a lossless compression method for wave files (and it supports tags, yay <3!).

Uemarasan 6th November 2006 08:41 PM

That's good to know :) Except for some mp3s that I burn onto CDs, most of them are stored in my computer. Still, too bad I can't get the full CD experience if I choose to burn them :(

I actually want the whole Ayu library in physical form. Pretty ambitious. Hehe. I think I have to wait for my midlife crisis for that to happen.

bluegie 7th November 2006 01:03 AM

back in the old days you won't hear the difference between 192 and 320..
now even with a normal sound card, you can hear quite a bit of difference between these two waves.

oh and dun forget the 256kbps.. my fav back in the old days.. better quality than 192 while file size smaller than 320 :D

Thulanks 8th November 2006 02:19 PM

I dunno what's the big deal with "First love".... for me RAINBOW or MY STORY are way better than it, without counting L'arc en ciel's AWAKE , but hey! That's just my personal taste, I dunno what's the big deal with Love destiny either, I'd rather Love refrain all the way!

hallelujah_united 8th November 2006 02:31 PM

Like Dustie said, it was probably the novelty that her R&B-tinged sound had at that time, since Japan hadn't been exposed to it much before.

immel 8th November 2006 02:39 PM

Indeed, and when something is new and fresh, and catchy, everyone catches on and when you're caught in the storm, there's nothing stopping anything from happening. I wonder what the next big boom in Japan will be.

Mad_Cactuar 8th November 2006 02:42 PM

You guys are crazy. Ever since the start of the year I've been ripping at 128kbps. You can't really use the 320kbps files unless your hearing is still exceptional or the songs are utilizing hgh frequencies. I only can tell a little difference (crispness mostly). Plus I have a portable CD player I use 75% of the time, so... heh.

320kbps files are just too big for me to store with my 20GB + 20GB computer storage.

Yeah, that's true and I can see why. I think too much pop was produced at that time and I think the pretty pony~pretty pony~pretty pony~'s needed a change in music. IMO, Hikki came at the right time. I love listen to every single track on First Love.:D I'm not surprised that her record hasn't been broken yet and I think it probably never will be broken.:P

Uemarasan 8th November 2006 04:19 PM

I consider First Love and Distance to be the best Hikki albums. In my opinion, she has yet to achieve something like those two works of art. Although I'm liking Deep River a little more every... month? (I really dislike ASAP, though.)

Personally, I don't think Hikki's early songs were THAT R&B. Sure, they have R&B influences, but they're pure pop for me. Several artists had already begun dabbling in R&B before Hikki. She was simply the one who popularized it.

Before Hikki's R&B pop, Eurodance pop was the most popular.

Jayee19 9th November 2006 01:03 AM

I'm supposedly a Hikki fan, yet I have never listened tothe album tracks of First Love or Distance. I really need to get on that. It's going to be hard to beat "Deep River" though. That album was crazy good. CRAZY GOOD!

Yeah I totally agree. Deep River is my second favorite Hikki album. I think Final Distance was best track on there. You should really listen to First Love and Distance though. I consider First Love the best of her albums because of the R&B/pop tune it had to the album (I love listening to J-R&B).

Uemarasan: I think that ASAP was her second best R&B song she's ever made:yes
