Who will sell more?

Ayumi Hamasaki and her album Secret?
Koda Kumi and her album Black Cherry?
Mika Nakashima and her album THE END?

I say THE END will sell more than Secret in the long run, Black Cherry will sell the highest among the three, but Ayu will still have a respectable amount and not be very far behind the two.

It's not about "Who is better". It's about "Who Will Sell More". I'm not implying that the good album will sell high or whatever crap. I'm sure Ayu's album will be the best in quality but sell poorly. Like that.

Black Cherry will sell more. since THE END is under NANA that will/might also sell well. but what like Psychotic_X mention, both kuu and ayu will dominate with kuu selling just a bit more than ayu.

Hitoiro is going to be a good indicator of how THE END will sell I think. But I think Black Cherry might just outsell everything else, as we might be expecting.

Then again, we said the same things about ORANGE RANGE's NATURAL, and look where that ended up.

I believe that Ayus album will have a lot higher first few weeks, while Kodas chart run sales will be more evenly split on more weeks.

Like some of the others have said, I think THE END has the potential to do really well/outsell Secret because of NANA.

NANA is still very popular but KUU has been more in to promotion than any other artist.

And AYU loves to surprises us. That is going to be the EVENT in 2006.

HITOIRO doesn't sound as powerful as GS. It's too subtle & gentle to be considered as a NANA song. I hope the rest of the album could make up for it.

Well, if the movie turns out to be some super-tragic tear-jerker that wins awards, expect the album to benefit from it, I think.

I'm hoping for Ayu to surprise me, but I haven't heard or seen any proof of extensive promotion yet, other than magazine appearances.

Yes I do Like Kuu More...But I still like Ayu..but Kuu is the 'it' girl right now. She will sell more. Then Kuu then Mika..but Mikas album has the movie tagged on to it right *Nana*..so It might boost sales a bit.

As for the lacking of promotion, I'd say blame avex and not Ayu, hehe.

You can be satisfied with an artist even if they don't shove out pictures of themselves all over a nation, no need to be disappointed over the lack of promotion :).

It's also very hard for us to notice how much promotion the various albums/releases get, as we don't live in any major Japanese town.

Just found out KinKi Kids will go up against Mika. I wonder if the NANA tie-in will help Mika get the #1 spot. I think it's going to be another close race for KinKi.

I don't know. The End just might provide an upset. The Japanese seem to like anything NANA. And if the quality is there (knowing Mika, it will be there 10-fold), that could be a serious seller.

Then again, Japan has Kumi fever and Ayumi is always a great seller. Hmmmm. Great question, Mad_Cactaur! I can't answer yet, but how cool would it be if through all this Kumi vs. Ayu crap, it's Mika/NANA who comes out on top?

you know..to tell you the truth *my opinion* I really dont think promotion helps that much..I mean yea if your new to the artist then it helps but for Ayu, Kuu and Mika they all have a fanbase already So if they are being promoted more really doesnt matter...Its the fans who will decide../end rant

I think Koda Kumi will be the highest seller with Black Cherry. Ayumi would be behind but again, Black Cherry is rather an equivalent of a BEST (C'mon, with 9 A-sides?!) so I wouldn't say they're on par in terms of sales. Koda Kumi with all the promotion would for sure sell more than Ayu.

I think THE END COULD sell more than Ayu with the NANA tie-in. However, I think you have to keep your fingers crossed on that.

Firstly, NANA 2 has been dubbed "new NANA" with Aoi Miyazaki out of the cast as NANA aka Hachiko, and I think Ren has been changed as well. Ok, this might not have a huge impact on the singles since it's still NANA but it might cause sales to lean either way.

Secondly, based on previous single sales, ENDLESS STORY by Yuna Ito outsold GLAMOROUS SKY, so does it mean REIRA starring YUNA ITO is more popular than NANA starring MIKA NAKASHIMA? It might be the genre perhaps?

Thirdly, Mika Nakashima's popularity has really taken a fall since her change at the start of the year towards the blues, gospel genre. Although I really liked blues Mika, the Japanese public didn't seem to be receptive and those singles didn't fare well on the Oricon charts. However, her change over back to NANA rocker style might just prove to give THE END an edge. The best indication is still to look at how HITOIRO fares on the Oricon charts.

See, if those extreme Ayu fans are like all, billionaires, then Ayu would do fine. But I do think Black Cherry will sell more, and I think The End and Secret will probably be around the same, give or take 5K.

But I have yet to see other promotion for the Secret album beside magazines and a few TV shows, and considering the album is being released at the end of the month, it's cutting a little close.

I actually picked Mika because of the NANA tie-in, but... I don't honestly care who sells the most. I like all three of them a lot, hope they all do well, and plan on (eventually) buying all three albums anyway (I might make Black Cherry my first Kuu album instead of BEST~second sessions~ as originally planned, and depending on how good Mika's is... well, I'm gonna buy her stuff soon anyway since I like her music a lot, just dunno in what order).

but over a very very long period of time...I think Mika's will sell more than ayu's...but by then no one will care...

I think black cherry will sell more out of the three....Secret and The End...I have no idea which one will sell more...especially knowing that The End will be the first and last Nana album...Secret...I dont know...I would like it to sell decently but even if it comes in the third place, I dont mind at all. Ill probably enjoy it the most out of the three. :D

I agree. That is why new artists get tons of promotion, to introduce the artist to ever face in the nation, the ones who get caught will get caught and stay caught for a certain amount of time. Extreme promotion isn't needed when everyone already knows about an artist.

I'm in very strong doubt that BLACK CHERRY would sell that much, considering that's around as much as BEST second session sold. BLACK CHERRY isn't a BEST album.

Second session sold like 1.8 million, not 1.2. I wouldn't say that a 600K difference would qualify as "around." 1.2 million sounds like a reasonable total sales number for BC. For Secret, that would be pushing it.

Black Cherry I think would sell around 1.2 million, Secret will sell 800-900k, THE END will sell around 400k. I don't think it can even compete with the other two.

I hadn't even given THE END any thought, but I'm unsure of how that will do. We'll have to see how well recieved Mika's new Nana single is recieved, I think.

The songs from Nana are pretty weak. I seriously cant stand them. GS was really great but the newer songs, meh. I'm also not a huge Nakashima fan so I can't really place my opinion on her. I haven't heard anything new from Kumi, in fact I'd only known that she had relesed one single this year.

I'm still kind of pulling for secret, I mean after My Story I was disapointed like no other but MU wasn't so bad so I kind have some hope.

Well, there's 4 Hot Wave, Yume no Uta and Cherry Girl. 3 singles, while Ayu has 2 out. Or 8 A-sides versus Ayu's 4.

They happen to like her music. There's nothing wrong with Ku fans being on an Ayu forum. I'm a fan of both women.

Perhaps there's something to be said for the release of two consecutive compilation albums helping her out - I think LOVE & HONEY with Cutie Honey gave her a boost, but BEST~first things~ really skyrocketed her career, and the momentum's been kept up with the ~12 Singles Collection~, tons of promotion, quality music (in my ears, anyway, and remember: One man's trash is another man's treasure) - her image probably isn't hurting things either, but I think that if the music weren't any good, her sexy image wouldn't be doing jack to move records.

Reason why I'm a fan? Personally, I love her music. Before secret, that's a different story. Still pretty good, but not exceptional, but those who like her early work - nothing wrong with that. But she's put out a lot of stuff that sounds great to me. Music I love listening to.

People sometimes act like Kuu doesn't deserve to or isn't allowed to have any fans, which is selfish. Don't like her, fine, but let US like her.

Besides, this... is a sub-forum for discussion of Asian artists. Kuu happens to be one - a very popular Asian artist too.

I never got the competition thing anyway. They're on the same label. Avex does not care about any competition. Ayu and Ku probably don't either - do you see them being pushed to sell against each other? No, they sell alongside each other. Competition within the same label is pointless. Competition between labels is pointless.

Can't the two release whatever and have their own fulfilling, happy careers without all the mud-throwing and catfights between their fans? It's... very immature.

Cutie Honey really helped her a lot, and then BEST ~first things~ cemented her in the hearts of casual music listeners. Since then, all her singles have either gone gold or platinum.

It was first with real Emotion, then she returned to being unknown for a year until Cutie Honey came along. Then her sales started to rise with Kiseki. secret was released 5 months after Kiseki and her popularity continued to shoot upwards (I think it outsold all her previous 3 studio albums in just 2 weeks). Butterfly kept her career high (as did her other 2 BEST ~first things~ singles). BEST ~first things~ it greatly affected her career, popularity and sales enormously as it outsold secret in (less than) 1 week. Then came the 12 singles/BEST ~second session~, which attracted even more fans. And her 4x Black Cherry singles attracted fans (while maybe losing some) and kept her popularity up.

Her popularity has kept on going up for like ~2 years now, and it was kind of gradual and it wasn't like: unknown pre ~first things~ => unstoppable post ~first things~...

Probably it will be a fight between Secret and Black Cherry. I doubt Mika's album will sell as much as them.

I think there's no chance of Mika's winning for Johnny's. I really think they manipulate the charts for some of their acts, like Kinki Kids (because of the #1 streak and all) because they always ends up winning with a very small difference.

I'm going to say Hamasaki's Secret because I haven't heard a lot of the tracks for her album, since she's only had two singles, as opposed to Kumi's. I've heard a good sum of her album tracks from her singles and so far from what I've heard, I don't really care for any of them, except for Cherry Girl perhaps.

As for Nakashima's Nana album, most of the songs have been on the singles so we've heard a good majority of them already. I like more of the songs of hers than the ones I've heard from Kumi this year. I'm starting to dislike Kumi because of all the rabid fans and the fighting that's occuring between Ayu and Kumi, not to mention that her releases have been really lacking this year.

Honestly, if Mika's first week was so low back then, how can she expect to beat out Johnny's? D:

THE END will sell great since it's a NANA album, but I doubt it can sell more than Ayu's Secret. As for Secret and Black Cherry...as of how things look from the sales of this year and last and if the trend continues, Black Cherry probably might sell more, but you never know :P.

As of today, I still think kumi will sell the most out of the three...but I will enjoy ayu's album more...(so far all the album tracks sounds great!) with mika its hard to predict if she will sell more than ayu...but if she does sell more than both ayu and kumi...I'll be shocked...just like how kaoru amane single sold more than 4 hot wave...

The younger generations will buy whatever is popular to keep up with everyone else and nana and kumi is the in thing right now...I think its safe to say black cherry will sell more than 1 million copies. As for Secret, if it does happen to sell more than 1 million copies, it will take many weeks and will barely break it. The End....I really have no idea..o_O
