The Official Spice Girls Thread

The official thread for discussion of the Spice Girls, as a group and as solo artists! (Although Emma Bunton, Baby Spice, does have her own thread.)

So back in the mid-90's, they were THE explosive girl power pop group, with their hits Wannabe, Spice Up Your Life, 2 Become 1, Say You'll Be There, Stop, Too Much, Vivia Forever, and Goodbye. There was the mature, tomboyish Sporty Spice (Melanie Chisholm); the refined and cool Posh Spice (Victoria Adams, now Victoria Beckham); the sweet, cute Baby Spice (Emma Bunton); the sassy, sexy, brassy Ginger Spice (Geri Halliwell); and the outrageous, wild Scary Spice (Melanie Brown) and her breast implants.

Anyway - a few Wikipedia links detailing the group and each girl's life/careers...

The Spice Girls

Melanie C

Geri Halliwell

Melanie B

Victoria Beckham

Emma Bunton

And Michelle Stephenson, the original fifth Spice Girl that could've been.

Ginger left the group around 1998 or so due to internal conflicts with Scary. Shortly after that, the remaining four girls released their final album, the decidedly urban/R&B-flavored Forever - to little success, and disbanded not too long after. Their legend still lives on, however, around the world, and especially in the UK - where they all still pursue solo careers to varying degrees of success.

Feel free to discuss your thoughts on the girls - together and/or solo - in here. Or discuss Emma in her Speshul Thread. (I almost feel obligated to make solo threads for the other four, but... nobody CARES about Mel B, really...)

..:Hot:Like:Wow:.. 3rd December 2006 07:49 AM

I was a massive Spice Girls fan during the 90's and I still love all there singles with "2 become 1" being my favourite.

I hope Mel C releases something soon. I'm dying for her music at the moment. I love her songs "I turn to you" and "Never be the same again".

I also wish Scary left instead of Ginger.

explodingbird 3rd December 2006 08:01 AM

I got into them a few years ago. Like '04, I think?

Mel C's new album is supposed to be released spring of '07, and I believe Life in Mono has leaked. I downloaded a copy, and I'll be checking shortly to see if it's legit.

Geri's apparently done with music, like Victoria. Geri was pretty good, but her singing did suck. I kind of want Mel B to quit while shes ahead too, but L.A. State of Mind wasn't TOO bad. Her voice is hideous, and she's rather embarrassing to listen to, but... okay, she can stop too. Leave the musical stuff to Emma and Mel C. Mel B can go have a baby with Eddie Murphy and name it Murphy Brown.

..:Hot:Like:Wow:.. 3rd December 2006 08:10 AM

*searches*

hmm... I see life in mono too.

Mad_Cactuar 3rd December 2006 03:27 PM

I only like... Geri Halliwell and Emma Bunton.

Geri Halliwell's melodies are TO-DIE-FOR. They're so catchy you'd just die. I love her songs, even in her major floppage Passion.

Emma Bunton is flawless. Nuff said.

JaysenRyan 3rd December 2006 08:04 PM

My fav is always Melanie C. I have all her albums, B-Sides,and karaokes I could find. I adore her. Emma is OK but i listened to "Life in Mono" and it'snot as good as her last cd. Melanie keeps getting better, and I hope she can top "Beautiful Intentions"with her 4th cd!

bondingo 4th December 2006 01:10 AM

I was absolutely obsessed with the Spice Girls in Elementary School. I still love them today, but I was just crazed over them (as all my other friends were) during the middle/late 90's, when they were still huge. I owned all of the dolls, all three albums, two singles, Spice World (the movie) on both VHS and DVD, a VHS documentary, their Pay-Per-View concert, and went to their concert when it was in my town. It's unfortunate that they just kind of died out as a band after Spice World, because I personally thought that Forever was a superb album. It may have been less pop, and more R&B than Spice and Spice World, but it was great nonetheless. Mel C had been my favorite during the time that I was obsessed with them, but it's Emma now. Her solo stuff kicks ass and her voice isn't bad at all (but neither is Mel C's). I wish that they would release another album or reunite for a Reunion Tour. But that probably won't happen... :(

..:Hot:Like:Wow:.. 4th December 2006 01:16 AM

There is big talk of a reunion for the Princess Diana memorial.

Vinylfantasy 4th December 2006 01:25 AM

I was obsessed with the Spice Girls when they were popular, those were the days. *nostalgia*

I still listen to some of Geri Halliwell's stuff like Ride It.

chocopockymaster 4th December 2006 01:26 AM

^ There was big talk about it for Live 8, too. Let's hope it materializes this time! :D

Ayumi-Yummi 5th December 2006 04:01 AM

... I'm a Spice Girl fan and I've been one since the late 90's.
Geri was a huge part of my life, and I have her devil/angel logo on my left calf. In recent years she's been acting a little off, so when Geri was on a loooong hiatus in 2002-2003, Geri was replaced with Ayumi (and it's still kinda that way). The Spice Girls rock, so far the only one I have hopes for musically is Emma. One day Geri needs to have a GH w/ DVD, she owes it to her long time fans.

On another note, a lot of Spice Girl fans are really defensive to their particular Spice Girl. I really don't know any nice fans either, not saying there isn't any (I'm one!) :)

jeffycue 6th December 2006 12:47 AM

weee! this is cool! am still obsessed with the spicies!

LA State of Mind is such a nice album.. nice but not great.. but i didnt understand some lines in the track LA State of Mind. i think i heard her say Filipino Little Sis. hahaha.

and hey! another Live 8 rumor? waaahhh! that reuniting rumor always gets me.. i want it soooo badly! GERI and VICKY has been hanging around now.. waaahhh! i want i want i want!

my last SG collection stopped with * at *
SG > FOREVER Album
Mel C > First Day of My Life Single
Mel B > LA State of Mind Album
Victoria > The Real Beckhams Album
Emma > Free Me Album
Geri > Passion Album

explodingbird 11th December 2006 09:20 AM

I have...

Mel C: Northern Star and Reason
Mel B: Hot and L.A. State of Mind
Geri: All three albums
Emma: Free Me (the U.S. version with the prettier cover)

Geri's done making music, she said. Victoria too - they both agreed that there's pretty much a snowball's chance in hell of a Spice Girls reunion. Mel B and Eddie Murphy apparently broke up, but not before he popped a bun in her oven. Mel C's releasing an album in spring, and Emma just put out Life in Mono.

Good times.

Keishi 11th December 2006 10:44 AM

I was wondering. Lots of people keep saying "Never be the same again" is about homosexuality. Is that right? o_________O

explodingbird 11th December 2006 10:50 AM

Well... I doubt it. I never thought of it that way, but really, the lyrics moreso imply that it's about two friends who've fallen in love with each other.

Mad_Cactuar 11th December 2006 10:58 AM

Wow, I just read about Mel C on wiki. Damn! I thought she was the biggest flop from Spice Girls. She's done pretty awesome. :eek Anyone care to upload her newer material (a track or two perhaps?) to give a chance to some people who haven't discovered her music?

explodingbird 11th December 2006 11:02 AM

If someone doesn't do it by tomorrow afternoon, I can upload a track or two off Reason and Beautiful Intentions (can't wait for the new album). Obviously, I can't do Northern Star since it was sold in the U.S. too, but the other two should be fine - they didn't get released here. DAMN IT.

Unless you already have stuff from Reason?

Mad_Cactuar 11th December 2006 11:06 AM

I have zero stuff. I have never heard of her music on my comp, radio or CD. They played a video by her on TV once, I hated it because her voice sounded terrible to my ears back then. The video looked something like Coldplay's "The Scientist". I don't remember or even noticed the music because of her vocals.

But I'm sure now I'll be kinder to her songs, after hearing all kinds of vocals over the past year.

I think maybe like her B-sides would be cool to upload like "Like That" and "Next Best Superstar (acoustic)

Kylie smells like victory as Beckham is knocked off top spot

Kylie Minogue has knocked Victoria Beckham off the top of the charts – but this time the battle centres on smells rather than songs.

Kylie took the No.1 spot for her new perfume Darling, while Intimately Her by Victoria Beckham was in second place, high street chain Superdrug said.

Jade Goody, Calum Best, J-Lo and Naomi Campbell all scored top ten hits too.

The market for celebrity perfumes has grown over the past year, according to fragrance buyer Tim Hughes.

He said: 'Five years ago fragrances were all about big beauty houses such as Chanel. The only celebrity fragrances were rather naff but J-Lo changed all that with the launch of her first fragrance.'

Mad_Cactuar 18th December 2006 03:12 PM

Again! :roflmao Victoria will never win against the great Kylie. I hope Sophie Ellis-Bextor beats her too next.

I believe so.

Here's the cover of her first solo album, where they're extremely obvious:

Either that or they're sagging very dangerously.

Chandrachan 24th December 2006 12:51 AM

Geri Halliwell's Passion and Emma Bunton's A Girl Like Me!

Sorry but I had to revive this thread.. I miss them so much!
I am watching their live videos on YouTube right now, and I'm thinking how the pop world has never had sth greater then them. They were poppy but they all could sing, the songs were creative, the shows were AWESOME. I so wish for a comeback =/

REUNITE? WE REALLY, REALLY WANT £1M!

Quote:

THE Spice Girls’ reunion will never happen - because Posh, Scary, Ginger, Sporty and Baby want too much money, an industry insider has revealed.

They are demanding £1million per show, more than any other all-girl band on the planet.

Pop industry sources accuse the five of flexing too much girl power and only being “in it for the money”.

At these rates, promoters say, they would never be able to recoup the cost of staging the shows.

Geri Halliwell (aka Ginger) is the ex-Spice who really, really wants the reunion, following the money*spinning comeback of Take That.

“The difference is that Take That weren’t just in it for the money,” said one industry source who refused to negotiate with the Spice Girls.

“They worked hard, wrote a new album and made their show a great spectacle. No one is convinced that the Spice Girls can still do that.

“The money they want will leave nothing for the promoters. Nobody wants to take them on.”

The source said reports that the band would reunite for a tour this year were false, although they did lead to talks between Victoria Beckham (Posh), 32, Geri Halliwell (Ginger), 34, Melanie Chisholm, (Sporty) 33, Melanie Brown (Scary), 31, and Emma Bunton (Baby), 31.

They agreed to reunite after Mel B and Emma Bunton, both pregnant, have given birth. There is still talk of them taking part in July’s Concert For Diana.

Mel C is the most resistant to a reunion. But her new album is released tomorrow, and she may have a change of heart if it flops.

I'd say she's having that change of heart now. With all the girls, their only real solo success came with their first solo albums, basically everything after that flopped.

yes u r a horrible human being and i hate you lol. jk. seriously i want it to do well, but ive got the cd now and its good, but not great like her last one. and im a total Melanie C *****

..:Hot:Like:Wow:.. 3rd April 2007 05:39 AM

I am a huge Mel C fan and it pains me to say that her new album is crap. The lead single is already horrible but the rest of the album is so much more worse, when you listen to the other songs, by the time you get to "I want candy" you'll think it's the greatest song ever.

LEOyumi 3rd April 2007 05:50 AM

LOOL, really? I haven't heard the entire album yet. But I really dislike everything I heard, and the two lead singles are ridiculous. And IWC entered the UK charts in a low position, but I don't know if the physical single is already released or just download/airplay.

..:Hot:Like:Wow:.. 3rd April 2007 06:10 AM

I think it was released on all formats which is really disappointing, I bet the Spice Girls reunion is really looking good now. lol.

Ayumi-Yummi 4th April 2007 11:01 AM

Yay the Spice thread is resurrected!
Mel B. Just had her baby girl on the 3rd of April -- AND the baby shares the same B Day as her daddy Eddie Murphie (Though the test to prove that Eddie is the father of Scary's baby has yet to take place)

As for Mel C... I'm loving her new look -- And I'm happy she still considers herself a "Spice Girl" (I read that somewhere) I Want Candy is cute and I can't wait to buy her album sometime soon.

Jordan 4th April 2007 05:06 PM

I only own the Melanie's albums, Melanie C is my favourite by far =]

Went to see her a few years ago (wow time has flown past) and i threw her my Dogtags on stage and she put them on :D you can see pictures at my Myspace!

LEOyumi 4th April 2007 10:44 PM

Wow Jordan, that's nice! Although I'm not a fan of her music, it seems she gives lots of attention to her fans (well, fans of her solo stuff lol).

And I wanna see if Mel B's daughter is really daughter of Eddie Murphy. As she claims it's true, I believe her lol I miss her solo stuff as well, Hot is good but I like LA State of Mind more.

Peger 5th April 2007 01:17 AM

I LOVE POSH SPICE.

That is all.

marty518 5th April 2007 03:01 AM

I miss the Spice Girls! I don't think I could look at them the same way, though. I was only like 10 when they debuted.. so now that I'm 20 I may not really be into the music they would make. If they sing their first two albums, I would probably love it if they reunite!

Peger 7th May 2007 10:58 PM

Mel C's latest album peaked at #57, and Emma's didn't do so well either. Hopefully they'll reunite after Emma has her baby!

I've really liked Emma and Geri's solo music so far. I think Emma deserves a lot more credit than she gets, her motown/60's stuff is really innovative. Posh has some good songs, too bad her voice is so bad. I can't stand Mel C, mainly because her accent is horrific.

cool_kickin_dude 8th May 2007 06:29 PM

it's a good thing they're considering a reunion tour. will be interesting to see

SKYia 8th May 2007 07:08 PM

When I got my first CD player in 1998 my very first CD was "Spice" :) They were quite popular here at that time but one year later nobody remembered about them anymore...

no matter what anyone says now, the truth is that those 5 women revolutionized the pop scene. they were cultural icons, even though were all too emo now to admit it.

i used to love the spice girls when i was younger. i even had they're CD, spice world. it was called that, right? and i also saw the movie a million of times, lol. the good old 90's.

extepan 28th May 2007 06:02 AM

i like geri the best.

anyway, the new emma bunton's single didnt even reach top 40 in the uk, which makes it the worst charting spice girls related single ever.

mind you, mel c will be releasing another single soon to follow 'i want candy' up. let's see if it will break emma bunton's record.

PrincessAyu 30th May 2007 10:39 PM

Spice Girls Planning Reunion Tour and Album

Quote:

The Spice Girls are preparing for a Christmas reunion tour, sources close to the band tell PEOPLE.

"It should be happening in December," a source tells PEOPLE. "Geri [Halliwell, a.k.a. Ginger Spice] and Emma ["Baby Spice" Bunton] have been in the studio writing new material and they want to do a worldwide tour."
It's going to feel strange if it actually happens, it's been talked about for so long.

..:Hot:Like:Wow:.. 11th June 2007 01:00 AM

^ yeah, as each day goes by, it seems more and more definite... I can't believe it's really gonna happen.

I remember people saying (including me) Mel C would change her mind and join if her album flopped and Yay! it did... and she decided to join in.

They seem to be very confident that one of the songs will be massive... I just wish they would make a proper studio album instead of a Greatest Hits one.

Ayumi-Yummi 11th June 2007 02:10 AM

They better get together, people like me have been waiting for ever and been supporting them all for a long time now (Geri is still my fav though) and like, I will be happy when Geri remembers her Ginger persona... I think it will even make her happy to be on stage with the 5 of them again.... I'm all for reunions btw.

JaysenRyan 11th June 2007 03:09 AM

YES! I WANT THE REUNION and yes i do think they should do a full album, or at least re-record all their old songs with their newer more mature vocals just for a change. If they did that I could be happy even if there were no new songs (but there damn well better be at least 3)

cater2u 11th June 2007 06:34 AM

extepan 11th June 2007 09:17 AM

victoria has already confirmed a reunion tour and an album, at the end of this year!

..:Hot:Like:Wow:.. 12th June 2007 01:31 AM

If something new happens ill eat my words, but i cannot see it happening!

marty518 14th June 2007 06:15 AM

The news is already out - Victoria herself confirmed the new album!

Not only that, but the news media has already gotten contract details for the recording! Each girl was contracted for roughly £5 million a piece for the album and promotional apperances/performances, and the album will have TWO new songs.

Victoria was the only one to speak publicly so far, and she said her recording was done at Olympic Studios in London. The girls have all recorded their bits separately, as far as I know.

"For the first time ever, there is some truth in the [reunion] rumours. We've been discussing it and it could possibly happen. I've always said, 'I don't want to do it, the past is the past. It was amazing, it was magical. We could never recreate it. But this year people have been talking about it and some of the girls have expressed an interest in doing it. There is just so much great feeling out there and I just thought, you know what, I don't want to be the person that stops it happening or stops it being a five-piece. But there have been a lot of reunions and not all of them have worked. If the Spice Girls were to get back together it would be for a very short space of time. It would be a final goodbye and a thank you to all the fans all over the world."

I love that they announce the announcement! So exciting. Only a few more days to go.

I think it would be heartbreakingly funny, though, if the announcement was just "Suck it, World, leave us alone."

As much as I love funny, I hope this isn't the case.

Yes, Spice Girls videos were great. Right now I can't think of one I didn't like.

They're having a press conference today, presumably to confirm a tour and greatest hits album, saw it on GMTV today xD

criminal 28th June 2007 11:57 AM

Spice Girls need computer power to boost their weak voices

So that means they won't be 100% live on their tour. Aww.

Anyway, is it me or does Victoria's hairstyle resemble Koda Kumi's?

AyUmIXx 28th June 2007 01:31 PM

yeah, spice girls are back at one!!!!

They look really chic. Looking at those people, I can't imagine them singing songs like Wannabe, though. :D

ohsixthirty 28th June 2007 05:01 PM

i think they all look astounding still. i used to be such a huge fan of theirs, secretly i still really like them. i would love to go see them in concert though, that would be great.

Faiza 28th June 2007 06:48 PM

I hope they wear the old iconic Spice Girls clothes for the reunion gig... that would be awesome, they look.. old atm =/ geri especially!

Keishi 28th June 2007 07:15 PM

Oh no!! The right to buy tickets is being given out at random lottery!! You have to register at their website, pick your city, and then the random selections will apparently be made later.

This is so scary.

I think they all look amazing, actually. They're in their 30s now, and have all lead their lives in a high-stress position, so of course they look old. But old is foxy, and it's so cool to see them all mature and classy. I think motherhood really looks good on Geri -- she's all earthy, it's so cute!

i was literally crying when it was on the news! :P

That article is 100% pure bull. Sounds like another crazy British tabloid.

Besides, nobody goes to a Spice Girls concert to hear perfect voices... they don't have them, and they never have. We've heard them sing before, so the whole world knows what we're in for.

Las Vegas, here I come! It's the weekend before the week of my first ever college finals...oh geez. But it will be so worth it. :D :D :D

bondingo 29th June 2007 04:25 AM

Well that sucks that they aren't coming to Hawaii. The Spice Girls were my favorite band of all time for so many years and now I won't get to see their reunion tour. That makes me want to cry.

But on the flipside, they may release a DVD, and they're going to release the greatest hits album anyways. Hopefully they re-record the vocals or do something to make it special for the fans who already have the albums. I already have two copies of each one, haha.

But if that article about the computer vocal changing device is actually true, then I'll never be able to believe live voices ever again. That's such a disappointment.

extepan 29th June 2007 10:30 AM

OMG they are coming to Hong Kong!!!!!! yeah!

Except for Posh, they look pretty nice in the reunion pics.

Why do people always believe what they see? I for one know that Melanie C would not use this method, as she has been performing live alot and has never sounded badly. This is just anolther thing the anti-spicers are doing to sully the return of one of THE most influential bands ever. You know what I say to the anti-spicers? F**K OFF! GO SPICE YOU ROCK I LOVE YOU!!!!!

Are you serious?

The computer voice thing is not true at all. It's all British tabloid rubbish. In fact, Victoria Beckham has quit smoking to prepare her voice, and all the other Spice Girls are strengthening their voices right now with a coach.

I'm so glad they're reuniting! It's like I'm in the 4th grade again! lol I recently listened to their CDs again and it brought back so much memories!

Anyone remember those lolipops with the Spice Girls on them? Those were so tasty!
