The Official Rihanna Thread

Well, I already made a thread for JoJo... so now let's tackle Rihanna Fenty, another teenager singing eerily sexualized lyrics!

A pop/R&B singer from Barbados, Rihanna burst onto the music scene in 2005 with her hit single, Pon de Replay, and has since had other hits, such as:

If It's Lovin' That You Want
S.O.S.
Unfaithful

...And... those are really all of her hits thus far.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rihanna

She's released two albums, both of which have sold well, and mixes pop, dance, R&B, ballads, and a bit of an island flavor with he rmusic.

And Beyoncé apparently wrote Ring the Alarm about her (that'd be hilariously awesome).

So let's all discuss Rihanna.

Cyria 17th December 2006 09:17 PM

SOS is very catchy but I don't care about the rest of her music.

criminal 17th December 2006 09:23 PM

I find Rihanna to be a great singer, a singer, not an artist. I loved Pon de Replay when I downloaded it on a whim, seeing it was #3 on the Hot 100 and I liked it, I proceeded to obtain Music Of The Sun which, at times, was too evident about her culture (read: too much darn reggae!). Highlights included the amazing Now I Know. When SOS leaked as that LQ 320-bitrate 48KHz song, I played it over and over, hoping it would get to me, but to no avail. Only when the video was released along with an okay rip, I began to love it without shame, nowadays I compare it to D. D. D. by Koda Kumi, they both have that non-stop singing thing going on which lasts almost 3 minutes. Then came A Girl Like Me, pleasantly, after only 8 months. I loved it so much more than her debut, highlights including Final Goodbye and P.S. (I'm Still Not Over You) (the way she sings out the letter is great).
I was also happy when I realized in November that I had been seeing the video for Unfaithful since JULY. We Ride flopped, how sad.
And I also get this feeling that now that she's a successful singer, she doesn't need me anymore, she has plenty of other fans. :)

drewbilation 18th December 2006 01:04 AM

Her album tracks, for the most part, suck. "A Girl Like Me" is slightly better than "Music of the Sun," but really they only have 5 or 6 good tracks each (and they all seem to be the singles, lmbo).

But still, I love her <3

..:Hot:Like:Wow:.. 18th December 2006 01:13 AM

Yep, I think her album tracks suck, kind of regret buying it, but I do love "Pon de replay", "S.O.S.", and "Unfaithful"

explodingbird 18th December 2006 05:38 AM

I... like her. Music of the Sun was an awesome album, but the midtempo reggae tracks were meh, but not bad at all. Just a bit... there.

I loved from that album....

Pon de Replay
If It's Lovin' That You Want
That La, La, La
The Last Time
Willing to Wait
Music of the Sun
Let Me
Rush
There's A Thug in My Life
(I was surprised because of the title... but the lyrics still creep me out. "When I see him tonight, I'm gonna give him everything.")
Now I know

The remix at the end just screws things up.

A Girl Like Me was... good, but not as great as her debut. Of the tracks, i liked/loved:

S.O.S.
Kisses Don't Lie
(Sometimes... other times it's very plodding)
We Ride
Final Goodbye
P.S. (I'm Still Not Over You)
A Girl Like Me
A Million Miles Away

Unfaithful... ehh. The music's good, but the lyrics SUCK so bad. They're so stupid. Not deep, not meaningful... stupid. You're cheating on your man and you hate that it's tearing him up inside ebcause he knows, you know he knows, you two don't speak of it. Dump him, or let him dump your ass, or stop cheating and work through it together, you stupid ho. Her voice is a bit reedy and it definitely doesn't work here and doesn't carry the required emotion.

The remix at the end is better than on her debut, but it still messes up the atmosphere set by A Million Miles Away. The reggae songs bored me to tears. You can't tell them apart!

Love the cover, though.

Mad_Cactuar 18th December 2006 03:06 PM

I have listened to none of her albums and I hated how irritating Pon De Replay was. It's like repetition canned. S.O.S was really awesome, and Unfaithful was just hilarious. I hate the lyrics, "murderer" is a really stupid word to use, IMO. We Ride plain sucks. That's all I know.

Her voice is really... two-dimensional? I don't know how to describe it, but it doesn't seem to have any power in it at all. Unfaithful came off emotionless and overdone for me.

Ayu_Fan_00 31st December 2006 07:15 PM

Pon de replay and if it`s lovin` that you want are the only songs I liked from her. I don`t like those songs unfaithful and s.o.s

drewbilation 15th March 2007 12:07 PM

Her new album's being released in Japan on 5/30. The US release should be early June.

Miku 15th March 2007 12:39 PM

I like only 2 songs from Rihanna
S.O.S.
Unfaithful

Keishi 16th March 2007 05:18 PM

I haven't heard much of her, but I can say that Let Me & SOS is really genius. :heart

stickyrice 16th March 2007 05:53 PM

She has catchy songs, but she can't sing at least in my opinion. Oh well, I'm still addicted to SOS and Pon de replay.

milky_way 22nd March 2007 01:31 AM

I like Rihanna and all, but IMO the some songs on her albums besides her singles are just plain boring

kotora 28th March 2007 11:54 AM

Rihanna is going to release an album in this year, but it is still a rumor.

drewbilation 29th March 2007 01:24 AM

It's not a rumor. The Japanese release date is 5/30 and the US release is 6/5.

The first single is already getting played on the radio.

Nanako 29th March 2007 01:42 AM

What's it called? I wanna hear it^^ Love Riri!

Thanks! I was about to get Music Of The Sun, just because I love Let Me so much.

You can listen to it on her official site. It's a pretty good song, but not as catchy as "SOS" or "Pon de Replay." I like the "ella, ella, ella..." parts =x

Actually, the album title is "Good Girl Gone Bad," lol.

Keishi 30th March 2007 08:58 AM

So it's been changed, eh? It was One yesterday. :<

Oh well. I like this title better. :D

spookshow 30th March 2007 11:22 AM

i love umbrella - its such a cute song!

Nanako 30th March 2007 09:37 PM

Thanx guys^^ I'm listening to the song right now. I like it! It's different for Rihanna.

Umbrella grows on me a lot. I feel so like Rihanna new style. Can't wait for her new album...

Nu-NRG 2nd April 2007 05:19 AM

I think it'll grow on me but for now the song is just ok to me
but I like the part when she goes "ela ela ela"
and the whole rock-ish sound

oh yea is interesting to see how the title kinda linked(just a thought)
A Girl Like Me...to Good Girl Gone Bad
A Good Girl Like Me Gone Bad? Not sure if you guys are in to tabloids or not
couple months ago there was a rumor about Rihanna stealing Beyonce's boy
and Beyonce was so mad and wrote the song "Ring The Alarm" for Rihanna

drewbilation 4th May 2007 12:35 AM

Cover for the new album is out:

And you can watch the video for "Umbrella" here. I'm not diggin' her new hair =x

JesA 5th May 2007 04:51 AM

woo i love Rihanna! SOS, Selfish Girl, Break It Off, and A Girl Like Me are my favorite songs. i really love the reggae songs like Selfish Girl. I can't wait for the next album. A Girl Like Me was awesome

Vinylfantasy 5th May 2007 10:20 AM

Umbrella is amazing, but the video is even more amazing. It's not just a boring dance video like I expected it to be.

Even though she did rip off Madonna's Fever video with the metallics...

True dat! I never would've thought that Rihanna would top SOS (both song and video-wise), but there you have it, another album lead single to be proud of. This better stay on top of the Hot 100 for 4 weeks or more or there's gonna be business. :irked Her album could use a top spot as well, but not if it's gonna have a chart trajectory reminiscent of Secret. :P

Cyria 5th May 2007 02:02 PM

Umbrella is surprisingly catchy, better than I expected.

spookshow 5th May 2007 02:06 PM

has anyone heard hate that i love you ft. Ne-Yo? i love that song too -- and i'm not usually a big Rihanna fan! I think i'm gonna enjoy Rihanna's new album

cater2u 7th May 2007 10:39 AM

i like her 'there's thug in my life... "

mi|kshake 7th May 2007 10:59 PM

Not a fan at all, but Umbrella is definately her most listenable song for me. I was quite surprised by it!

mi|kshake~

Umbrella is quite good 0.o

Sweet, found the single for download xD

fanmail 8th May 2007 02:54 PM

Her new song is great!! I'm waiting for iTunes to get it though ^o^

kotora 8th May 2007 05:48 PM

I got "Good Girl Gone Bad" whole album. WOW, this album is her best so far. Only 1 or 2 songs I don't like. Others are superb! This album definitely will be a hit in clubs!

Love~Distance~ 8th May 2007 06:12 PM

I just watched the vid on MTV yesterday and I really like her new style/vid and everything but one thing that bugs me is that they keep comparing her to Beyonce....there's no way Rihanna can outdo B. lol IMO, Beyonce is the best African-American singer in the US!!!!

and I LOVE Umbrella, It has become my favourite Rihanna song, (sorry for Unfaithful that was my favourite before xD) there are just one thing I don't like of Umbrella... the rap part! I hope she puts the cut version without the rap on the CD >_<

Maybe that's what you mean... anyway, I hope it doesn't leak too soon on the internet :)

BTW, Umbrella is awesome and I'm in love with it. The Jay-Z rap could be removed though (which most radio-mixes do anyways).

JesA 8th June 2007 09:31 PM

i just bought the album today, and so far, i love it! i do miss the reggae songs though...i really love reggae music! it's what made me love A Girl Like Me...but i like this album because almost every song is catchy...i love the digipack case and the artwork...haha this is a bit off topic, but my mom's cousin once was the nanny for the owner of Def Jam records..I HAVE CONNECTIONS!

btw, anyone know where i can find the Japanese mixtape?

Kobayashiwoof 10th June 2007 02:24 PM

i bought Good Girl Gone bad delux edition today =D the only thing i hated is that... THE PACKAGING WAS CHEAP!!! i didnt know australian editions were soo... thin, easy to rip and floppy. hehe :P. I just need to buy her other 2 albums when i have the money =D

i also got no digipak :(, just a crummy paper thin slipcase and a normal 2 disc flip thing.

Aisha_Angel 10th June 2007 03:56 PM

I'm worried because I don't see Rihanna's album on the billboard charts yet. People are saying that it's because it failed to chart, but don't they usually get updated on Tuesdays, not Sundays? This is argueably the BEST American album of 2007 for me, it's just hard to believe that it's not charting at all but has a number one single from it. Hopefully, they just haven't updated anything yet or something...

Cyria 10th June 2007 03:59 PM

They haven't updated yet. Rihanna is predicted to sell 165-170k, might be #2 after the new Paul McCartney album or beat it by just a little.

Rihanna's album will probably chart at number 2 or 3, because it can't beat Paul McCartney's new effort, from what I've heard. First week sales will be about 160k. But everything will be specified on Thursday, when the Billboard site is updated.
I love the album too and think that it deserves the number one spot, but look at Fergie's The Dutchess. It debuted at number 3 and it's on the way to sell 2 million. I hope Good Girl Gone Bad has some great longevity as well.

Halla 10th June 2007 09:06 PM

when it comes to worldwide music sales, the first debut sales are insignificant compered to charting longevity.

Fergie's The Dutchess had almost half the debut sales of Gwens The Sweet Escape, but at the moment both albums have sold pretty much the same amount total.

hit albums spend a long time going up & down charts all around the world. PCD by The Pussycat Dolls has sold 6+ millions and it's been charting for almost 2 years.

austin. ♥ 10th June 2007 09:18 PM

it's a brillopad album!!
my top 5 are;

Umbrella
Don't Stop The Music
Shut Up And Drive
Hate That I Love You
+ Push Up On Me!

Cyria 10th June 2007 10:47 PM

I hope the album has longevity too. Shup Up and Drive (and Breakin' Dishes after that?) seen like they should have good potential as singles.

Don't know about Billboard yet, but the album is now UK #1.

That's some good news. Having a #1 album in a major music market like that must surely give her star power a bit of a boost.

JesA 11th June 2007 03:09 AM

i just realized...i really don't like Shut Up and Drive...i think Breakin' Dishes is a better song...

and people will get mad at me for this, but it's scary...am I the only one that thinks Breakin' Dishes sounds very similar to Nelly Furtado's Maneater?

and another thing...i'm really wanting this Japanese mixtape...anyone know where i can download it? ive noticed a couple people in this thread said the have it.

Cyria 13th June 2007 07:47 PM

The album is Billboard #2 with 162k, ahead of Paul McCartney with 161k and after T-Pain with 171k (never heard of him before). It's a better debut than her previous albums (#10 and #5), but I like the album so much I wish it had sold even more.

Partino 13th June 2007 08:23 PM

It's nice that she managed to snatch the #2 position, but I, too, wish she would have been #1. Haven't there been about 5 occasions when the same artist or band has the UK and US album and single #1s, with Beyoncé accomplishing it most recently in 2003? She had a chance at history, but something tells me this won't be her last chance.

Partino 13th June 2007 10:46 PM

you can bet your well formed a** on that ... that girl is going to rock till 2030

Cyria 14th June 2007 08:30 AM

At least Umbrella is still #1 and with the quality/high profile of this album she seems to have won over more fans (like me :)).

Partino 14th June 2007 08:57 AM

I hope that Shut up and drive has also an awesome PV ... I'm so looking forward to this PV

criminal 14th June 2007 12:00 PM

I wish she'd copy that scene from Britney's Stronger music video for SU&D, you know, the one where the camera, like, spins over the mirror on the car door. That is so cool. :D

Partino 14th June 2007 12:30 PM

still britney's best video ... well I have a feeling that we are going to see a lot of rihanna in the newest PV ... cause the song is about SEX .. and you don't have sex with your clothes on ... at least not me

I heard that Chris Brown wrote a song called Cinderella that shared a beat with Umbrella, but I haven't heard of an official Umbrella remix with Chris Brown on it, though I may be behind on the latest news. Perhaps a fan mixed the two songs together?

I'd like Rehab or Hate That I Love You to be the third single. I'm sure Rehab would take advantage of Timbaland's and Justin Timberlake's current status. :P

Partino 16th June 2007 12:37 PM

Cyria 16th June 2007 06:59 PM

I think it might be a bad idea to release Rehab, since the Amy Winehouse song with the same name is a memorable hit right now.

spookshow 17th June 2007 03:05 AM

^ ah yeah i forgot about that song. I'd agree with you, if Rihanna's Rehab wasn't so damn good.

she has a very odd accent. I can't seem to place it. Does anybody know where she's from. (it would explain her unique singing voice)

She was born in Barbados in the Caribbean.

Oh, you're absolutely correct. :(

I have a feeling this album won't have a complete era that spans over 4-5 singles just like her previous ones. Unless Rihanna does a Beyoncé.

3-4 would probably be a little more accurate, but I want "Breakin' Dishes" to be the next after SU&D though :)

And I'll punch her if she pulls a "Deluxe" like B did. I'm already pissed enough at Beyonce for that, even if it probably was not her idea.

^ i agree, Breakin' Dishes should be the next single after Shut Up and Drive...i want a video for it!

This is such a good album. Much better than her other attempts.

My top five:
1. Don't Stop The Music
2. Umbrella
3. Sell Me Candy
4. Breakin' Dishes
5. Lemme Get That
...but I love Push Up On Me and Shut Up and Drive too! ^_^

Her voice goes well with synth more than the reggae beats. Love it.

Umbrella is still #1, but Good Girl Gone Bad is down to #7 with 81k. I hope Shut Up and Drive keeps the sales steady.

That's lovely! I don't know who Scott Simons is but I really like his version.

and people will get mad at me for this, but it's scary...am I the only one that thinks Breakin' Dishes sounds very similar to Nelly Furtado's Maneater?

/QUOTE]
Now that you mentioned it, I can see it. Mainly in the vocal delivery. Another thing I noticed about Breakin' Dishes; it's edited =(. Pissed me off when I downloaded the remix cd and heard that that the version they used for the remix is unedited and the one on the album that I bought is edited. GRrrr! It really messes with the flow and attitude of the song to have the goofy gap.
