[article] 'Flavor' single claims digital crown

Excerpt:
Quote:

Hikaru's "Flavor of Life" also holds the record for the most successful single of all time in Japan in terms of units sold across all formats with total sales now in excess of 7.7 million. The previous biggest selling single in Japan was the 1975 release "Oyoge, Taiyaki-Kun" by Masato Shimon, which sold 4.5 million units, according to Oricon, which compiles the Japanese charts.

Hikaru additionally holds the record for the best selling album of all time in Japan with her debut, "First Love," which has sold nearly eight million copies, according to Oricon.

Jean Francois Cecillon, chairman and CEO of EMI Music Intl., said: "Utada Hikaru has once again led the Japanese music market into new areas of growth and success. 'Flavor of Life' has firmly established a new form of hit single —one where consumers can purchase music in whatever ways they choose. In the new music environment we must deliver multiple products for multiple consumers."

Why always Hikkiß her music isnt THAT good

DeepRiver 19th July 2007 12:08 PM

It's awesome. Flavor of Life is great but soooooo big numbers? Awesome .... just awesome ... Hope her Kiss & Cry / Beautiful World Single is doing great in the charts.

ayumisrael 19th July 2007 12:12 PM

It's really awesome, Flavor of Life is a good song! Congrats hikki.

Though mainly it gained its success from the popular Drama and hikki's divorce so I wouldn't say it's a natural success or an up rising... Without them I think that it might've been just a quarter from the total sales but I like hikki so congrats anyway ^_^.

~ayu-cake~ 19th July 2007 12:21 PM

Wow o__o
That's a hell of a lot.

Congrats Hikki :)

AyuGAME 19th July 2007 12:48 PM

i think its just a tune not a copy..but its still a WOW thing to achieve

ayu_fan929 19th July 2007 12:52 PM

Looks like they included her ringtone sales in to the 7.7 million.

ayumisrael 19th July 2007 01:04 PM

^Yeah, at least 7,000,000 of those sales are just ringtones...

No it is good. D: Why would it sell so much if it was trash?

Congrats to Hikki anyway, that single was so successful. :0

Peger 19th July 2007 01:09 PM

This is a clear case of record labels stretching numbers to make their artists look more successful than they are. You can't come FoL's overall sales with singles that were released before the era of digital downloads...

Well to be fair, RIAJ has certified both the Original Version and the Ballad Version
2x Platinum on cellphones and Gold on PCs for full song downloads. Adding to the physical sales, I think that would put it around 2 million.

ayumisrael 19th July 2007 01:23 PM

^Did the company/hikki got the same money from physical copies and downloads of the full single? (Well, generally ont just hikki).

sora2522 19th July 2007 02:14 PM

...

wow...

though i didn't like the original that much, congrats =3

Beauty4123 19th July 2007 04:22 PM

i didn't think that the flavor of life single was amazing, but it was a great single overall. congrats to utada!

darc_aqua 19th July 2007 04:33 PM

wow thats huge. it wasnt one of her greatest singles in my opinion. im more excited about Beautiful World/Kiss & Cry. I hope that single sells well also.

At least the article made it clear what formats have been included in the total number.

Basically, Utada Hikaru is a blessing to everyone that likes music. I hope she won't get all "I WANT TO END MY CAREER ON A HIGH" on us. D:

I don't think full single downloads are popular in Japan.

namiie 19th July 2007 08:31 PM

I personally think that Hikki's strength lies most in her composition...I'm not too big a fan of her voice (which borders on whiny/off key at times). I must admit that Flavor of Life is good though. I didn't feel this way before watching HYD 2, but yeah it's a great song! XD

CatGirl 19th July 2007 08:45 PM

Congratulations to Hikki!! ^__^ Although, of all songs, why Flavor Of Life? o-o I love it and all but I don't think it's one of her best songs ever D: Oh well, I'm still happy for her

Miku 19th July 2007 09:08 PM

that's alot ^_^
congratz HikkiChan =)

bondingo 19th July 2007 09:17 PM

Wow, this single was such a success it's shocking. I'm glad for Hikki though, because I've always loved her. And I think it was a great single, even if I think there are other singles that are perhaps more deserving of such an honor. Still, the tie-in to such a hugely popular drama was obviously an enormous influence on sales.

Kikaru 20th July 2007 01:39 AM

Well, she made a decent comeback after her last three singles not as successful. But I didn't think Flavor of Life was that spectacular.

But I thought it fit the theme of HYD 2 better than Planetarium did HYD

Beyond the Sea 20th July 2007 01:41 AM

I give thanks to that show.

s1012h 20th July 2007 01:48 AM

hikki's on FIRE!

TITANIC 27th November 2007 09:03 AM

WOTT..
that was really great for hikki ^^

KuroixShiroi_Namida 27th November 2007 09:19 AM

Congratz to hikki :D!

Of her releases this year i really like Flavor of life, Flavor of life -ballad version- and beautiful world. The others are so-so and i hate Kiss & Cry.

i wonder about that too 0_0 i mean yes she has good music.....but its not always consistent......she'll release reallyy GOOD songs once inawhile......

yet she seems to sell so much....

oh well.. i love her personality ^_^

slowmoth 27th November 2007 10:28 PM

I think the song is good, but just good, nothing special :/

ayuayu798 28th November 2007 12:41 AM

Congrats to hikki ^^

Zeke. 28th November 2007 04:40 AM

This is crazy nuts. Ubelievable. Congrats to Hikki. I really wish that people would have payed more attention to the Original Version instead though. It is so much more interesting than the Ballad Version, I mean COME ON. In terms of ballads, Hikki has done better with Be My Last. Ayu's JEWEL was and still is 1,000,000+ better than the Ballad Version of Flavor...

Luv ~Venus~ 28th November 2007 08:02 AM

I like the Original version more the Ballard version. I thought that Hikki could have done a PV for the Original version. Have you seen the performance for the Original version? I really liked it plus she had a great since of style (clothes-wise). I wished I could have worn what she had worn during that performance.

Well, no. But Her original version was no. 1, and Ballad no. 2 on the first half yr of full song download charts.

At first I didn't really think FOL was that excellent (yeah compared to Be My Last, Dareka, Sakura, etc.). But it turns out this song has a strong grow on in my mind. Now I really think it deserves what it gets. Yes probly the song is not that unique in a way.. I mean it's like a normal love song compared to those Be My Last Dareka blah blah blah, but it's unique in hikki's discography for its simplicity + wonderful lyrics.

WillofDusk 28th November 2007 10:47 AM

Hikki's music is ok but I really dont like the fact that she achieves things without putting much effort in it.
But congrat to her anyway :D

Full single downloads as in "all in 1 package" with instrumentals, remixes and everything. These 2 versions were downloaded separately.

That's cuz you're so used to Ayu's poppy fun music. Utada's music is very mature and has a lot of potential. People in Japan love her music style and her voice. Afterall, she was the one who basically introduced R&B to Japan.

Janko, her music is amazing! She's really talented, some of her works are masterpieces! It's a shame she didn't do well in the U.S.

sugarbasil 16th December 2007 09:32 AM

I personally love Hikki, but for some reason I wasn't a big fan of Flavor of Life. I really think that it was all because of all those tie-ins....

Erm ... no. R&B has been around in Japan since before Hikki was born, so no. She did not introduce it to Japan. Not at all. Anyways, congrats Hikki! I bought this single! :3

austin. ♥ 16th December 2007 04:22 PM

^ Exactly. I hate it when people say that.

Luv ~Venus~ 17th December 2007 07:38 PM

She was the one who did in that specific genre though. So you can say she made J-R&B more popular and recongizible.

Oh no no no! Her voice is the best out there XD Better than Ayu's I have to admit, of course. But I still love both^^ But her voice is not whiny or off key O.o; Maybe in live performances...but hardly...

Uh, no. R&B was definitely introduced to Japan by Hikki. They were all really excited about the new genre that Hikki brought along with her. Trust me, I know my stuff about Japan :D

KaoriNeko 18th December 2007 02:09 AM

First, you didn't have to post four times in a row. Then secondly, R&B has been in Japan way before Hikki. For example, the song Kumi covered with EXILE, WON'T BE LONG. When did that come out? 1990, before Hikki was even eight years old...

Luv ~Venus~ 18th December 2007 03:25 AM

^If I'm not mistaken both versions of WON'T BE LONG was pop, not R&B. The only person I can say who covered R&B was Namie but she was more pop, not R&B. Like I said early, Hikki was the only who solely did R&B during those times.

I definitely agree with you. And thank you for trying to clear it up for her :D
Though I don't want to fight over it xD

For your first remark...I was replying to different people. Not just you :D
Secondly...I was sticking up for my friend whom you smashed just because you thought Hikki didn't bring R&B into Japan. Lastly...I really don't want to fight :no Honestly, lets just keep it at that. I will apologize first, sorry kaorineko :(

I don't agree, even if she writes and composes all of her songs it doesn't mean she's putting the most effort, it says that it's natural to her to do so and she's becoming from a music background family, so no wonder.

The thing that got me into ayu first is her voice.
The thing that got me into hikki is some of her best catchy songs, but her voice is really good as well but no better, ayu's voice is really good too.

You don't need to try to prove that hikki is better though, she's your most favorite singer so of course she'll be better in anything for you hehe XD

At this we should all stop, and stop bringing here other artists other than hikki.

I agree with this post. She was not the first person to release R&B in Japan, however she, along the artists who followed, definitely made it what it is today. :yes

I get that. I think that's a totally more agreeable statement. She definitely wasn't the first but I'd say she was definitely a pioneer.

Actually Ayu's my fav singer. Utada's just a tad bit on the boring side but I do believe she's more talented than Ayu. But there's just something I LOVE LOVE LOVE about Ayu that's made her my all-time fav singer. And I don't mean her music <.<...but of course I'm inlove with that too.

milky_way 19th December 2007 05:58 AM

Even if Hikki's music usually bores me to tears, I'll congratulate her because I kinda like FOL and it did have massive success.

Ayumi^_^ 20th December 2007 06:06 PM

Kinda expected flavor of life to be number one! To me, it was quite a good ballad and the tie-in with hana yori dango makes it even more sellable

Hikki can sing her ass off if she wanted to. True she didn't perform her best at UU06 (I think she did though) but look at her other performances and you'll she that sista can throw down. Listen to more of her R&B songs to find good results of her soulful voice. :yes

hikki's music is just jawdropping beautiful
she improves with every album, and ULTRA BLUE is perfection
she can sing, her music style is my kind of music, and she writes and composes every one of her songs
talk about amazing

ayu just can't compete with her
but, ayu and hikki are two of the best things to ever happen to japanese music
