Here's my take, but I never got good grades for German back when I still got it in school...so ;)

"The Japanese answer to Britney Spears

"Nobody knows her here (yet), but over there Ayumi Hamasaki is bigger than Britney Spears and Madonna combined."

"Ayumi Hamasaki is an unknown in this country. In Asia the 24 year old Japanese woman is the new Pop icon. In the last 2 years she recorded 7 albums and had 28 hits. Ayumi Hamasaki is not only a pop star, she's a pop supernova, and it's only a matter of time until she's also succesfull in the International music scene"

(couldn't think of the exact English translation for that last sentence, but that's what it means basically :) )

(I'm guessing the 'steht' they use means what I used in this first sentence, it made the most sense when I look at the text around it)

"The 25 year old can't stand rock music anymore. In the past Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple where her favourite bands, now the Japanese woman prefers Soul, for example Babyface and En Vogue."

"Her own music is not so much about love, but rather about fun. Ayumi Hamasaki is on the white dye/paint and on candy. She advertises for - SCHMALZKRINGEL - and also mobile phones, energy drinks and lipgloss"

"Ayumi Hamasaki actually wanted to become an actress, still Max Matsuura, a producer from Avex (one of the biggest Japanese music labels) discovered her talent. From there he produced her first single which went on the market in 1998. In the same year her first album appeared, which immediately rose to the 1st place in the Japanese Album charts. Her latest album comes out on the 12th of May this year, a collection of her most beatifull ballads."
______________________________

Not sure what they mean with 'Farbe weiß', it's either the color white, white paint or white dye. White dye (for the hair) makes the most sense I guess.

Got no clue whatsoever what 'Schmalzkringel' means, but if you know what products she advertises for, you can fill in a product which wasn't named already and pretend that's what 'Schmalzkringel' means. ;)

HappyGoLucky thank u fur da wonderful translation

boogieordie 30th May 2003 12:54 AM

Hmm, that's not really accurate information.

She's always listed both Rock (Led Zeppelin) and Soul (Babyface and En Vogue) as her favorite musicians, so I HIGHLY doubt that she doesn't like Rock music anymore. It wasn't like she listed Led Zeppelin one time, and then listed Babyface another time, they were always listed together in what I've read. I think their source was a little off.

Also, she's been around for 5 years now, so that would be 7 albums (appearently NOT counting Remix albums, but counting A Ballads and A Best) in 5 years, not 7 albums in 2 years.

Nice to see she is getting some international attention, but it'd also be nice if they go their facts straight.

Thanks for the article, mimika, and the translation, HappyGoLucky!

It's commonly used, and had been used on this forum, as a derogatory word for homosexuals.

sxesven 15th June 2003 10:10 PM

LOL, I ph34red this Schmalzkringel would mean something really sick, when I searched on Google I found this line:

Sie legen einen Schmalzkringel um Ihren Penis.

Rough translation:

You put a donut (I know what it is now) around your weener, but I think you figured that already.

Now that's just sick!

PS: I have NOT clicked on that link.
