[2008] kanariya thoughts

I know this is kind of random, considering this song is so old, but I thought it'd be kind of interesting to have a discussion about it since I can't find one about it.

What does everyone think of it (the song[s] and the PV)? Personally, I feel the song's tune itself lacks a little something and the PV is pretty ok, but I really love the lyrics. I'm absolutely in love with them. I think they're so much meaning behind them. Also, Ayu looks gorgeous in the PV. :P

Does anyone have any sort of idea if there's any sort of meaning behind the PV? I think the fact that the little old lady has the black eye make-up is really cool. :P

Your thoughts?

sibby 22nd March 2008 11:17 AM

Aw man, the whole song is so ***** and weird and all..

i don't really know the meaning, but i dont mind knowing :D the whole black makeup thing was weird too >_____>

i never really thought too much about it >_> its just another weird ayu pv to me :P

yoshino 22nd March 2008 11:41 AM

hahaz. I think we are some lazy people who don't think much about it. lolz.

yeah, it's jus weird to me too. People with the headphones looking around and Ayu lying there.... I also don't know what's going on. Anw I didn't see the lyrics so probably I don't find the link with the pv yet.

I hope someone will come and anaylse this pv too. hehez.

(Ayu certainly look nice in black.^_^)

Beffi 22nd March 2008 12:10 PM

I remember a thread about this last year some time.

The PV is really weird, and I find it hard to understand what its meaning is, but "kanariya" means "canary" but the only bird in the PV is like, black, such as a raven or a crow.

But the lyrics say:
"The city is alive
The people are restless
The birds that
fly into the night
are already asleep..."

The birds that fly into the night...? A bird associated with the night is either a raven or a crow, so that might explain the bird in the video.

Canaries are mentioned in the lyrics:
"
It's not that the canaries whose voices were crushed to death
couldn't cry."
Canaries are birds, but here she's talking as if canaries were people, with feelings and things.

And there's people looking quite sad and/or shocked in the videos:
" I fear
my dreams waking up
My heart breaks
I'm afraid to go."
Maybe they're in fear? Black = night = fear = sorrow ...?
Haha, I don't know, but that's all I can get out of watching the video. >_<

tommy96814 22nd March 2008 12:19 PM

pretty hot to see ayu cover in jewels :D

DestinyWishes 22nd March 2008 01:19 PM

I love the PV! I don't know what the meaning behind it is though. I don't like the original song, but I love the remix. :heart

KuroixShiroi_Namida 22nd March 2008 01:37 PM

...Mmh i haven't put much thought into the song + pv tbh D:!

fanmail 22nd March 2008 02:03 PM

I think I'm the only ayu fan in the world who actually LOVES the original mix. XD

The PV is amazing, I love it. There's so much symbolization within it, and the song's lyrics are so deep and meaningful. <3

Catzi 22nd March 2008 04:18 PM

I think it's so high pitched that the original song isn't that good. But the remixes are great, and the lyrics are amazing.

The PV is okay.

prussian blue 22nd March 2008 04:34 PM

well i never concentrate listen to the song...
i just remember the high pitched of ayu's sound and the BG vocal...
no comment

ayuzlove 22nd March 2008 05:08 PM

hmmm...the song dun really attract my attention at all...same for the pv...but ayu with long black hair looks very pretty :D

Coelacanth 22nd March 2008 05:29 PM

I also dislike the original version, but the remixes are all pretty okay. I tend to forget this song is in her discography.

we rock. :hi5 it's such a unique ayumi song. xD

Chibi_Venus 22nd March 2008 07:28 PM

Haha that's really strange that this thread was made because I just recently watched the PV for "kanariya" on one of my DVDs! :P

I personally love this song and the PV. Both have that mysterious feel; I think the fact that it's very underrated (and mysterious to fans) also boost up my love for both the song and the PV.

The lyrics indeed are quite special and the PV is fun to interpret and look at different interpretations.

jon_the_d 22nd March 2008 08:27 PM

oh no..not again....

i think we need someone who is very very well versed in japanese literature and history and folklore to explain the whole point of the "canary" reference in this song. I am convinced it is referencing some well known story or something. not just random personification or allegory.

until we have some one who knows what the canary reference might be, I think I'm gonna avoid all the random specualtion that is bound to ensue.

But what if it IS a random personification or allegory?

hehe.

I'll ask my Japanese professors about it tomorrow and get back to you on that...they're all very well-read and are pretty much geniuses, so if they don't know anything about a canary story or something like that, then I'd say it's probably just ayu being creative with this one.

The original mix is the hidden track on LOVEppears right? If so, I like it too.

This PV was so strange that I blocked it out of my memory after seeing it it. But I love the song <3~ I'm sure if it's Ayu, then there has to be some sort of bigger picture involved.

you can count me in as well. I love kanariya (original version in LOVEppears) to death. This song actually made me think she has something inside :D. Before that I only listened to appears and WHATEVER. The former song was so japanese, while the latter one was super weird to me (as I wasn't into dance music). I remember the first time I listened to kanariya was on the plane (the time when the single was released). I was like, "wow this song is better than the other two" LOL.

This song (esp original version) is just extremely unique in ayu's discography. I've never heard another song from ayu similar to kanariya. (same to NEVER EVER, another unique one).

To me, canary gives me an image that it is always an expensive pet to be kept in the cage by its owner. So practically it's pretty yet lonely... being captured inside a cage forever... No freedom at all.

I didn't read the lyrics of kanariya, so I dunno if there's any real connection to that golden bird at all.. :P.

excellent! you do that! and then let us know! I hope they have some idea! cos then there's a few more ayu lyrics related questions I've got for them!!!!

Maemi 26th March 2008 04:37 PM

i like the PV,and i love the song,but Ayu's 'high pitched' voice ruins the refren ;__;
i prefer the remixed versions though....

Tom Punks 26th March 2008 06:09 PM

I love kanariya and the PV. I don't really like the original mix and I'll never listen to it if I actually realize that it's playing, but there's something about it that's just... memorable as an Ayu song. I think it's just the PV's effect on me though. .__. It's one of my favorite Ayu PVs.

Halla 26th March 2008 06:45 PM

Kanariya is one of my favorite songs by Ayu. it's just so unique in her discography and the remixes of it are just awesome.

*points to my title* :yes

Chiharo 26th March 2008 06:49 PM

I LOVE kanariya (original mix from LOVEppears) because it's so unique.
The only thing I didn't like are those annoying backing vocals.
But nevertheless this song is great.

kotora 26th March 2008 08:12 PM

The one and only one good remix from Jonathan Peters for ayu.

Ayumi Hamasaki - Appears (Avex)
Ayumi Hamasaki - Audience (Avex)
Ayumi Hamasaki - Karnariy (Avex)
Ayumi Hamasaki - Seasons (Avex)

and he got typo in his official site :D.

Off-topic: He can spell Kumi's name wrong too.
Kumi Kouda - Take Back (Avex)

technically, that is the correct way. her birth name is 神田來未子 (kouda kumiko) but she goes by the name 倖田來未 (kouda kumi) in the music business. Her surname 倖田 is pronounced as こうだ(kouda) which shows that the 'o' sound is extended (ko-u-da). In Japanese, when the う(u) sound follows an 'o' sound, it implies that the vowel is an extended sound, it's just that usually when transcribed into English, the extended vowel is cut out. Hence, kouda then becomes koda.

dartsofpleasure 26th March 2008 10:52 PM

I've always thought this song was singularly unique for Ayu because the lyrics are very mysterious, not easily interpreted, and quite poetic, unlike most of her other songs (especially nowadays). The PV remix of the song is one of my all-time favorite Ayus, but I still can't stand the original mix. In my opinion, R&B is not music (just kidding!)

That doesn't make any sense. The original has the same lyrics as the remix. The music isn't techno, but it's still music. I don't understand how it's not.

P.S. The jewel covered Ayu was gorgeous :) You could see her panties while they were covering her with jewels in the making of. just fyi.

I was just saying that while I love the lyrics, I dislike the original mix music-wise because of my general distaste for R&B style music. The electronic remixes more suit my tastes.

actually, kanariya's one of my favorite Ayu songs! it's so different & unique from her other songs. :heart

the PV is amazing too. i just love the overall feel to it.

How do you explain the song title of kanariya? :rolleyes:rolleyes

DOLCE 27th March 2008 02:36 AM

Was it ever revealed who the male singer in Kanariya is :no????

xLuna&1LOVE 27th March 2008 01:14 PM

I used Kanariya for the Cooper Test... I love the beat of this song :3... but it is not Ayu's best song though... AND WHO IS THAT MAN THAT "SING" IN KANARIYA????

Deneb 27th March 2008 02:13 PM

heh, i never thought about neither the song or the pv much. but the black jewel case is :luv2

just because you don't like R&B, that doesn't give you the right to say it's "not music". that's ridiculous... :rolleyes

I mean the typo in Jonathan Peters website lol.

Kikaru 27th March 2008 05:56 PM

I tend to forget about that song...

But I do like the original R&B version, because I thought it was kinda cool that she done an R&B song, and I'm not really fond of the remixes because dance-trance have never really been my cup of tea (I can stand it mildly on Loveppears, but anything trancier is just...no for me). Although I'm not really fond of how her voice sounds in it.

The original version is something that I would really like her to resing again, only in lower octaves so that it wouldn't be so piercing.
