Does Ayu come up with song titles?

Well I was scrolling through my ipod when I begin wondering, does Ayu come up with the song titles, like Mirrorcle World, A Song for XX, etc. cause some titles are really unique~so does ayu make up the titles or there's a special person that does that?

zoomzoom 8th May 2008 11:32 PM

Well she probably does, since she writes the lyrics.

everlastingRAINBOW 8th May 2008 11:52 PM

>.<

Chibi_Venus 9th May 2008 12:21 AM

Most likely, yes, since (like zoomzoom said) she writes the lyrics.

I once read someone's idea that she might have the title in Japanese and then looks up a translation of it in English and uses that.

I'M NOT SAYING THAT THIS IS THE TRUTH! Someone once made an ASSUMPTION that that's what she does.

Just to clarify so no one jumps down my throat.

:P

zoomzoom 9th May 2008 12:36 AM

She probably either writes the lyrics, then comes up with a title that fit them or she has an idea of a subject she wants to write about, writes down some possible titles and then write lyrics for it.

She could also get titles from the composers. They might call the track they've made something, before they pass it on to ayu and she could go with that title if she likes it. I think this might be the case for some of the interludes.

Lol... I think she comes up with them on her own, though she might get some help.

I also think she comes up with them in English primarily, the words don't seem like something she'd find from a translation of a Japanese word/phrase.

e.g. talkin' 2 myself, Together When..., Endless sorrow, etc.

But, I guess we don't really know her exact method... someone should ask at her concert! haha.

pommy48 9th May 2008 12:52 AM

maybe like a meeting, a group of people propose song ideas to ayu, and yeah hehe we should ask ayu this question~

Catzi 9th May 2008 01:13 AM

I think I read somewhere that she does come up with the titles. Sometimes she comes up with the title first, and sometimes she writes the lyrics first.

KarenPang 9th May 2008 06:57 AM

I think it depends .

Sometimes she can come up with the song title & then write the lyrics & vice versa I think

waterballoon 9th May 2008 07:01 AM

Omg these are the kind of questions that should be asked in the "Ask Ayu A Question" section in her concert encores...

Anyway, it's most likely that she thought of the lyrics herself. After all, Ayu is brushing up on her English, so it's of little wonder to me.

Scary? I thought it was so funny like how her expression was so constipated and like she's saying/thinking "wtf?!"...

Anyway, back on topic: I just remembered that the song titles are definitely thought by Ayu... I mean Are You Wake Up?/Greatful days; Engrish titles as such... yeah it's Ayu.

:roflmao

you're funny lah

Aga-chan 9th May 2008 07:42 AM

I'm quite sure ayu comes up with the titles herself. Whether she looks them up in a dictionary or not isn't really important, is it? And I still wonder why people say "Greatful days" is Engrish. It's a play on words - like "Mirrorcle World". I think that playing with words like this shows a rather high level of knowledge.

As for the titles for the intros and interludes ayu probably comes up with most of them, too. I don't know about her earlier albums, but I think that since "RAINBOW" (if not earlier) she picks them herself. Because the interludes started to have an image that fits into the album. For "RAINBOW" it was "everlasting dream", "taskinillusion" and "neverending dream".

waterballoon 9th May 2008 07:44 AM

^ I guess you are right. Greatful days is play on great+grateful. Interesting... okay my apologies for labeling Greatful days as Engrish...

Anyway, she must have came up with all her song titles, seeing as how her trademark total English + capitalization has already happened ever since A Song For XX.

Deneb 9th May 2008 09:56 AM

I still wonder how she could come up with "mirrorcle" >_> i know its mirror + miracle but i would never be able to come up with of it. although I am surpriseed there are no japanese titled songs(>_<)

waterballoon 9th May 2008 09:59 AM

^ Well, her nil Japanese titled songs (excluding Hana/HANABI/HANABI ~episode II~) are kind of like one of the things that made her stood out, am I right?

And some of these titles I find are really nice... like Moments, Liar, kiss o' kill etc

Ayu_no_tenshi 9th May 2008 10:07 AM

I think so...yeah

TITANIC 9th May 2008 11:52 AM

i think depend on the song is great or not.

:yes i love the title in RAINBOW too~:heart

its so illusionic and surreal... i love it~ (actually i love the word "illusion" very much :P)

and some of the title, is the word suits the lyrics?

can someone gives an example? IMO i didnt see the connection alot of time except some of them like voyage, seasons etc

Aga-chan 9th May 2008 01:23 PM

^I think that every songtitle connects to the lyrics in some way. I at least haven't found one where it isn't possible to draw a connection so far. Though at times it might only be apparent with extra informations from ayu herself.
Sometimes the titles even add an image that the song wouldn't have otherwise. Like "talkin' 2 myself" and "Mirror" for example.

waterballoon 9th May 2008 02:52 PM

Yes, every title connects to the song somehow. And her capitalization matters a lot too. I think I've mentioned this before but um

If her song titles are all caps, like BLUE BIRD and CAROLS, the song usually has a straightforward mood, like how BLUE BIRD is 100% cheery and CAROLS is a straightforward heartbreaking ballad.

If her song titles are something like Dearest, Voyage, Connected etc, the title usually is a state of emotion/a place/an emotion/a title to someone.

State of emotion:
Trauma
Pride
Bold & Delicious

A place:
Voyage (not really a place, but rather a journey...)
Beautiful Day (not really a place again, but rather a sort of formality towards the day itself)
Moments

A name/title:
Dearest
Liar

A time of something:
Ladies Night

and so on.

Next, if her songs are all in small letters, the song usually sounds either happy/sad, but has a subtle meaning of depression/hope, as opposed to how the song sounds like.

criminal (depressing sounding but has a slight tinge of hope at the the 2nd chorus)
fairyland (happy sounding but obviously is a very dark song in terms of title chosen and PV)
decision (cold/harsh sounding but an anthem of self-acceptance in actual fact)
fated (sad ballad but has slight tinge of joy "The one standing before is none other than the real you")
flower garden (happy sounding but lyrics are actually about the pain of difference, IMHO)

If her titles are something like Endless sorrow or whatever, I guess it's a mix of the above examples.

Also, a cap may represent emphasis, like:

my name's WOMEN (focus on WOMEN; girl power)

Therefore, I guess the way she capitalizes her titles are important as well.

Oh gosh, we should start a 'Ayu in Literature' thread... Ayu has so many nuances and depth in her songs/PVs!

se7entheaven 9th May 2008 03:45 PM

I think she's writing the lyrics then decide what title to put

agree with that :D
but i think most probably the case will be like ayu write her feelings down in her diary or something ( perhaps a small notebook ) so that she can refer to her diary book for writing lyrics? ( i think most of the movie director did that.. )
or perhaps, she went around places to search for "lyrics feeling" to write lyrics :D ( like Hyde went to London to produce music.. )
but i remember ayu said in a TV interview in CCTV, she says that her current mood = her current album, so i assume that she use her mood to write her lyrics?

oh no please !
if my English Teacher saw that(wad if she's a ayu fan.. lol), perhaps she'll ask us to do EL literature in class for artist :shakehead ( i hate literature -.- ) lol.

PS sorry for the double post.

visionfactory 10th May 2008 01:49 AM

I read somewhere that Ayu named a song "NOT TO BE" but Max renamed it as "TO BE"

Aga-chan 10th May 2008 07:14 AM

^I've read that several times, too. If this was the case then I think he asked her to rename it because "NOT TO BE" sounds so negative probably?

Deneb 10th May 2008 09:33 AM

O.o i didn't know song names have such deep history xD i wonder if the title font matters too or not :p

funny her name in cds doesnt have capital though...capitalization is indeed important

what about HEAVEN, its rather lonely, yet all CAPED lol >_>

waterballoon 10th May 2008 02:28 PM

^Well yeah HEAVEN sounds sad, if the title is in all CAPS it's either straightfowardly happy/sad.

alternarist 10th May 2008 02:36 PM

how about the title M?

it has no meaning when u just look at the letter "M". But i bet ayu doesnt want her song to be titled "MARIA".. i will feel that it's cliche too..

but realise whenever the song M is part of a tracklist of any album/DVD, it has this special font that she always uses!!! why is that so?

waterballoon 10th May 2008 02:44 PM

M could be something special; after M marks the first song that she has ever composed so maybe... it could be in the special font just for that.

And 'MARIA' is just so... cliche as you put it.

Aga-chan 10th May 2008 03:09 PM

There's also a chance that "M" has this title, because there could be another meaning to it. Who knows?

waterballon, i do love your avy ^^

che0173 16th May 2008 01:51 PM

i think she does coz the lyrics reflect A LOT towards the lyrics and she makes the lyrics xD
