Shiina Ringo: Is she good?

I'm not familiar with her, and I'm always looking for new artists to listen to ;). Is she any good? What genre? Reccomendations?

paper_doll 28th June 2008 01:24 AM

Personally, I love her, but I can see why she may not be for everyone. She seems to dabble in a bunch of different genres, but I think she's generally considered rock. I really like her Shosou Strip album and song wise: Honnou, Yami ni Furu Ame, Gibbs, Souretsu, Sakana, Momen no Handkerchief, Gamble, Sakuran and Tadashii Machi are some of my favourites.

♥ you! 28th June 2008 01:24 AM

Not really a huge fan of her but this song is a classic :heart

cosmeticmusic 28th June 2008 01:47 AM

Wow! That Honnou video was cool! (there was a part of it that reminded me of Kuu's BUT o_-)

Is Ringo a lesbian? Do the lyrics relate to her licking that woman? Do the put it there just for the hell of it? Just curious...

she has a really unique voice and song style...you need to listen to her song so many times before you like it...

ALPHY 28th June 2008 03:25 AM

I love GIPS. That's all I have to say, haha.

bulmasman 28th June 2008 04:47 PM

Shiina's amazing, easily one of the best artists in Japan. As well as her earlier rock stuff, her more recent Jazz stuff is even better imo ^^

http://youtube.com/watch?v=x0CY2e4glHE - Sakuran ^^ can't go wrong with this track :D

&

http://youtube.com/watch?v=Ny5pT8FV10w&feature=related - konoyo no kagiri ^_^

Ani_C 28th June 2008 05:17 PM

^ Agree.

Personally, I LOVE her and she was my musical mistress during the period where Ayu was my musical love (Now that no longer matters xD) but her voice is rather nasally and you either learn to love it or you hate it therefore you need to get a feel for Shiina.

So I recommend listening to her first 2 albums, Muzai Moratorium and Shouso Strip perhaps even some Tokyo Jihen and you should be fine with the rest ^^

PSYCHEDELICOdust 28th June 2008 07:48 PM

amazing amazing amazing karuki zamen kuri no hana amazing amazing favourite artist amazing amazing tokyo jihen amazing amazing amazing check into her.

bulmasman 29th June 2008 12:58 AM

^ omg for some reason i so imagined you doing the Charmy dance while chanting that XD

But yeh, i totally agree ^^ amazing is the only way to describe her

And yes, Shiina is one of the greatest artists in Japan. Her work is unique and she's exrtremely talented. Her voice may not be the best, but she's a great composer and very creative.

Exactly what I meant to say. She's talented, unique and impressively creative. Give her a try right now. By the way, she's releasing a B-Side album collection in this week, great chance to know her.

JimmyKoria 29th June 2008 10:21 PM

Shiina is probably the most intresting Japanese artist. Most of her albums have track titles that mirror one another. On KZK some of the mirrored songs even shared the same instruments to the beats and the whole album ran 44 minutes and 44 seconds (while 4 being an unlucky number in most of asia).

Some of her lyrics are rather vague, especially at a first glance. I believe there is one song she performs with Tokyo Jihen about two lovers commiting suicide. The girl believes the man is going to just leave her to die instead (meaning he's not going to die and just let her go) so she decided that since she is dumb enough to believe him and be in love with him she deserves to die.

Her voice is little bit... weird ? unique ?

I can't say her voice is really great, but she's so special and unique. (She rolls her "r"s unlike any other artists!) Her music is really great and different.

It's my favorite song from her!

Oddly enough, she's probably got my favourite voice in JPOP or in general, I think it's so emotional.

Shiina Ringo is, well...was amazing. I haven't really cared for anything she's done since her first album with Tokyo Jihen (and that was quite awhile ago). I highly recommend that album and her first three solo albums though. I think Shouso Strip is undoubtedly her best. I think her debut album is a close second in terms of being her best, so try those out if you want to hear some of her best/most popular songs (i.e. Honnou, Tsumi to Batsu, Koko de Kiss Shite, Kabukichou no Joou). She also has some insane music videos that are both creepy and captivating.

As for the Honnou video and lesbianism: I heard that the scene where she kisses the other girl is supposed to represent masturbation. The woman she kisses is supposed to look just like her, so as to represent having sex with yourself. The entire song is apparently about the fact that not only men, but women too, have sexual desires.

yatsuda 1st July 2008 06:35 AM

She's extraordinary!! I love her different music styles, her voice, her lyrics. Definitely worth listening to!

I've always heard about Shiina being amazing, but never got into her....I listened to some of the songs you guys suggested, like Honnou, but sadly I'm not digging any of them. Her voice grates on me, for one thing. Oh well, I guess she's just not for me. I'll send Honnou to my boyfriend, though, he might like it.

I know what you mean. I'm a fan, but I do think she's a little overrated sometimes. I'd never deny her great artistical ability, amazing composition skills and creativity though, and, aside from most of the Tokyo Jihen stuff, I do actually love/enjoy many of her songs from her regular solo career, but I don't think she's for everybody's tastes. I've seem hardcore shiina ringo fans complaining that certain artists songs are too loud/noisy/ screamy, and I was like "wth, aren't you a shiina ringo fan? Why are you complaining when that artist is is loud and screamy in one of their songs when shiina does it in most of her songs and when she does it you say it's supposed to be the finest state of art? contradictory nonsense imo". If you like noise, you won't be complaining if other artists do it. I think some of her songs would sound better if they removed some of the noises and distortions, but i guess that's kind of a signature? My brother often complains a lot when I listen to shiina and he's around in my room. He goes like "wtf is that noise? what terrible vocals...How can you tolerate such a horrible sound? turn down that volume" and it annoys me a lot when he says those crude things, but I can understand his point. I think she's an acquired taste as I was a little like him the first time I listened to her.

cloud♥honey 2nd July 2008 06:04 AM

I like Shiina's screams. They're pretty cool but it makes me tired sometimes.

:laugh I remember, I listened to KZK first and I was like :tired What the TRUCK!? xD I actually kinda forced myself to like her and after Shouso Strip... It worked :love She really is an acquired taste.

Ani_C 7th July 2008 02:56 AM

So, has anyone heard her new album? If so, has she re-sung anything?

paper_doll 7th July 2008 03:56 AM

Not that I can tell, I think it's all the originals (except Mellow?), but I haven't heard all of the tracks before to say for sure.

Ani_C 7th July 2008 08:34 PM

Ah, well that's lame. Lazy sadistic woman xDDD
