The meaning of the name ayumi
 

i read somewhere that ayu's real name is Hamasaki Kurumi, so Ayumi must have a meaning of sort if she came up with one? or maybe she just picked it cuz it sounded cute :D
i know in chinese they write ayumi in kanji and it means 'step'...but i dont think these are right.:rolleyes

hmmm.....about her name i think i read somewhere that her father gave her the name kurumi but wen he left her mother changed her name to ayumi but i'm not sure what it means.......:think

I think the name Ayumi does mean steps or walking. You'll have to ask masa or another Japanese speaker for a complete explanation.

japanese names are cool like that... my friend is called asami... asa means hemp, and her parents gave her this kanji because hemp grows straight, so they hoped that she would grow up "straight" ie without too many problems... and mi = beautiful... quite commonly found in girls names, for obvious reasons

Interesting idea, but it's a misunderstanding. "Kurumi" is originally one word which means "walnut".

No, it's true. I have two ways to back that up:

1. When I insert link of Ayu's Official Webpage into a webpage translator, Ayu's name is always translated to: "Hamazaki walking".

2. Ayu's name in Chinese is pronounced "bean chi boo". It means something to do with walking.

hamasaki means beach cape, and ayumi does mean "walk" of some kind. Ayumi could mean many things though, since she dosent write it in kanji, we cant tell but I guess that quote that mmskalmn gave us is all we have, and its probably right.

Its also cute, and I hear japanese girls often right their first names in Hiragana =o

my dad really loves Ayu...and he's always interested into what her lyrics mean in english...and he also loves to find out what Japanese peoples' names mean. he's thinks they are very beautiful *me too!* and he wants me to try and find out what Hamasaki Ayumi means. can someone help me here? :thud

Hamasaki for as far as I know is only translated to "Hamazaki" in english, which iunno wtf that means.
Ayumi means 'walking', and I think Ayu is some sort of fish...

Hamasaki = "Beach cape" according to my Kanji dictionary...well, those are their single meanings put together:

浜　hama - beach
崎 saki - cape, promontory

She writes her name in Hiragana usually, but for overseas versions of her CDs, the kanji "歩" is used, which means "walk".

Ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis altivelis) is a typical riverine fish of Japan. Ayu fishing is quite a unique way to catch fish. This method relys on the territorial feeding behaviours of the Ayu fish. Ayu feeds on algae which grows on the surface of the stones and rocks. That makes sense ;) Japanese names usually have interesting meanings attached to each kanji/character. I forget what the characters for my Chinese name mean exactly, but I know one of them stands for water lily.

soory for the double post...but is it just a coincidence that Ayu's dad was a fisherman? or at least, she thinks he was?

It may or may not be....sometimes family names (surnames/last names/however you want to call them) are based upon what the families' occupations were in the past.

For example...today in class I learned that my professor's husband's last name, "Yagi" derives from the fact that their ancestors had a lot of rice fields in the past...although 「八木」 means, literally, "8 trees/wood"....if you flip the "ya" part upside down and kind of attach it to "gi" then it becomes the kanji for rice (I forget the reading for it x_x so I can't input that kanji right now)

Oh, I just remembered, didn't she use a different name when she was an Idol? I think it was Kurumi Hamasaki. Does anyone know what Kurumi means? I wonder why she chose that name..

^ Depends on if she used kanji for that name. At the moment, I can only think of 「来る」 which means "to come [to a place]"...but I dunno if that's even correct :laugh

Why would Ayu change her name from Kurumi to Ayumi?
I thought she was always "Hamasaki Ayumi".
I have old pictures of her back in the day, and they say Hamasaki Ayumi. :shrug.

^ I think on the first page of this thread someone mentioned how Ayu changed her name to "Kurumi" for her modeling career or something. o_o Hmmm.

Ayumi Hamasaki's real name is 浜崎歩. The kanji 歩 is related to "walking", it has nothing to do with fish. The fish and her nickname are pronounced the same way but there's no other connection.
