hardest PV to interpret

A lot of Ayu's videos have deep meanings behind them which is one of the reasons i love her videos so much. Do any of you find yourselves having a hard time depicting what the videos symbolism means? If so, what ones?

Me, its Alterna. Thats the hard one for me. One of my friends gave a good interpretation of it and i still dont fully get it.

Your thoughts?

alterna 3rd November 2008 05:27 AM

"ourselves" and "walking proud".

s1012h 3rd November 2008 05:52 AM

Mirrorcle World, only because I am in complete state of WTF towards her attempts at being "fierce".

SURREAL__RAINBOW 3rd November 2008 06:09 AM

Kanariya:
the style of this pv is pretty weird, pretty "electronica", etc. the song is called "canary", and there appears some other black bird instead. the people sitting in the middle are doing nothing... annoys me xD

SURREAL:
the song and pv are awesome! even so, the pv is a bit weird... but I think its bcose it represents surrealism LOL

walking proud:
such a touching pv... but at the same time, weird and beautiful
the lyrics are pretty awesome too

ourselves:
weird pv, and with a really strong meaning too. I like the part when the guy starts kissing and licking her picture... that is mad

Moments.

pommy48 3rd November 2008 08:16 AM

hm a pv to interpret the AMAZING symbolism that is necessary to show for the human race..oh of course, it must be Bold & Delicious..the symbolism in there is so great that I can't possibly figure out what's it's about..hidden cure for cancer? :rolleyes

reixminako 3rd November 2008 08:28 AM

Moments is the hardest to interpret, I think. I would imagine that others like "ourselves" and "alterna" would be pretty straightforward, but I guess not to some people...

alternarist 3rd November 2008 08:47 AM

just 1 LOVE!!!!!

Ayunk 3rd November 2008 09:35 AM

Ladies Night - the whole PV is weird and seems more like ayu is going through a nightmare
TO BE - idk what is she doing in the whole PV
Mirrorcle World - agree with someone here who said about her attempts at being 'fierce'

emi♡ 3rd November 2008 09:41 AM

Moments...and I don't think I ever "got" walking proud...but I need to rewatch it.

some of her PVs are just weird.

Whats the story behind Ladies Night again?

Ayunk 3rd November 2008 10:09 AM

^ Erm in Ladies Night, she is along some weird corridor. And when she opens the doors to different rooms, she sees weird things. And also when she turns around, she sees herself but without a face. And at the end, a scary guy staring at 'us'. :thud

TO BE pv is pretty straight forward because it matches the lyric. To me and probly many people, kaleidoscope is just a boring thing, that you use one of your eyes looking at the "dynamic" beautiful vision while twisting its front. The boy in the pv held the kaleidoscope (or ayu) like a precious treasure.

AyuGAME 3rd November 2008 01:23 PM

alterna..for sure

waterballoon 3rd November 2008 01:26 PM

Her MY STORY PVs were definitely the most complex to me.

Moments... I don't get kids turning into dolls... what could they mean? And her soaking/bathing in that chocolate thing... blood? I don't know...

walking proud... I just don't get it, except for the last part, where she became a cyborg too. Maybe she gave up "something" and thus became that cyborg, whatever that "something" is?

About You... I think it appears to be some parody of her past album covers (look closely; there's a guy who looks like I am..., and a half-naked woman which reminds me of LOVEppears), but there could be something more; like her getting trapped in that cube.

sanzo2011 3rd November 2008 02:12 PM

Ladies night , ourselves , moments , especially Moments .

ayuzlove 3rd November 2008 02:29 PM

walking proud and alterna :yes

terra 3rd November 2008 03:29 PM

The cyborg thingie in walking proud maybe related to the lies she told, she said surrounded by lies right, something artificial and not real....

For me the hardest ones are kanariya and SURREAL maybe, her old PVs are hard to interpret too

SolarAngel 3rd November 2008 04:00 PM

Ladies night. The whole thing is just too weird and the ending really freaked me out. What's with the bright corridor, the dimly lit hotel rooms, ayu's neon-purple dressing, the creepy victorian-dressed ladies in strange rooms with strange decor, then there's the part where she's like hitler or something and people are marching..?

ohsixthirty 3rd November 2008 05:08 PM

i always thought it was ladies night. that pv is all over the place.

but its one of my favorites.

xLuna&1LOVE 3rd November 2008 08:02 PM

But I love the song.

Yeah alterna is pretty hard, mostly because we can't really interpret what the extras such as the clowns and the eyeballs are about.

I think the basis of the PV is an interpretation of the music industry. They take advantage of singers dreams of becoming a star and turn them into machines for making money until they are no longer profitable. This is what I interpreted after seeing Ayu open the letter saying "CONGRATULATIONS! YOU ARE THE STAR!" and her all excited, even during the questionable meeting with the freaky clown that doesn't look trustable. Her torso on the mini-stage dubbed "The singing machine" with the clowns taking photos and newpaper prints of the "Best Hit Singing Machine" suggested the music industry's high level of advertisement to maximize revenue. Then her torso outside the appliance store (act labeled "Garbage Dump") is a reflection of what the industry does after the talent runs out, throws them away like garbage.

xLuna&1LOVE 3rd November 2008 08:15 PM

^ I tought ALTERNA is just like:
It's about that everybody is a most-wanted doll in a show.. but when somebody is "better" or so.. then it will end up in hopeless... (destroyed Ayudoll)
Something like that

Princess Sohee 3rd November 2008 08:50 PM

BLUE BIRD

ComatoseBunnySnatcher 3rd November 2008 09:59 PM

Um... walking proud, and kanariya..

Also, in About you there's a man with a cat snout (Duty) and the half naked girl has a raven in her hands at some point (kanariya?).

hpg23 3rd November 2008 09:59 PM

^ I agree completely with the alterna thing. And the eyeball, notice that her eyes are closed during part of it, I think it means that even when she wants to ignore things she can´t?

I have theories for Ladies Night and ourselves:

-Ladies Night shows the different kinds of women: All those behind the doors, the ones who only care for the looks (the butterfly one), the one that secretly dominates the man (the maid hitting his employer) and Ayu, who is like calling her girlfriends to let her out of that creepy place. Then ayu´s army is like the world become dominated by women. I think she is critising the idea that womens are superior than men, and then it ends equality anyway. Because she is also shown without face, like she loses her identity... and the creepy man is the men´s revenge?? xDDDDD It´s a bit scrumbled up but I think it may clear up the idea for some.

-ourselves is clearly about fans acossing her, when they adore her so much that it becomes an obsession (the guy licking and kissing her picture) and they want to become like her (all the others with the ayu masks) and the haters (those ripping her pictures and smashing the TV where she is on) and the gothic ayu is like her real self, fighting against all that, I think.

And refering to Mirrorcle World, I think she just went: ooooh Pariiiis!!! What a chic place! Gimme the biggest dress you´ve got and lets pose :3 and those frenchs extras can chase me because I´m so pretty and glamorous *-* (dies of a glamour attack xD)

ComatoseBunnySnatcher 3rd November 2008 10:02 PM

^ LOL I think Mirrorcle World is supposed to be the new installment
in the James Bond franchise XD

rakeru 4th November 2008 02:31 AM

ALL OF THEM.
but specifically, 1LOVE, No way to say, and walking proud.

ImpactBreaker 4th November 2008 02:57 AM

I don't think alterna is that hard to interpret. I think it's a little clear that ayu is showing how media abuses pop stars, by following them with papparazzi (the clowns), "terrorizing their lives" (artists lose their privacy), and then how they help to make a star rise (BEST SINGING 'MACHINE') and then later throw them on the trash, by destrying their fame with tabloids (the machine tossed on trash in the end).

GRACE 4th November 2008 02:58 AM

alterna and ourselves are really the only two I get. And alterna more than ourselves. Other than those two, I don't get ANY of her PVs >.>... But they're still entertaining XD

I thought alterna was more the record company, not the paparazzi. The company signed her in at the beginning of the PV, and then transformed her from what she was, into a machine that did only what they told her to do. And then, typical of a music scene, what she was doing was "mass produced" by other singers, and then she wasn't necessary, so they got rid of her.

darkcarousel 4th November 2008 03:26 AM

The clowns take pictures of ayu and then her pictures are displayed on paper the next day "THE BEST SINGING MACHINE". The clowns also stalk her. That sounds more like paparazzi than "record company". There was no other "singer" in the video. All singers were her; all machines were ayu, but in the end the achines are just forgotten and tossed in trash. There is probably a crossed criticism involving record companies in it too, but I can't remember everything of the video now.

I think at that time ayu was being targeted by a lot of chinese tabloids, but i don't recall she having problems with avex at the time of alterna's release...or was she?

I don't know, the clowns where also sent her the "You are the stars" and made her into the singing machine, perhaps they function as both. Also, there's only one Singing Machine in the trash at the very end, I took that to be the original who got the invitation at the beginning was thrown away for a new singer, who was basically reproduction of herself.

ImpactBreaker 4th November 2008 04:05 AM

^Yeah, but even with different ways of interpretting it, I don't think that PV is that hard to draw conclusions, even if the conclusions might all differ (I know that you agree with me in the part that it isn't the hardest to interpret, even though we might have different interpretations). I mean, it can't really be compared to PVs like Moments in which things seem so disconnected and nonsensical with her in a room sitting on a chair, then kids playing and later breaking dolls in another room, and in another place she's all covered in oil with wings:shrug...In alterna at least we see there are clowns that follow her, that probably lead her into some sort of a trap, stalk her, mass produce her and later trash her.

(miss)understood 4th November 2008 04:07 AM

Moments is not hard to interpret.

The children pulling apart the doll - representing the person whose heart began to be scorched, and "fell into an abyss"

when shes on the ground, this is her being "tarred and feathered," still representing the person who was being treated wrongly and going through hard times

alterna isnt hard either
its about her career
and the boy at the very end who lifts up her skirt? its the effect caused by the way the industry markets women

Moments- I have tried again and again and again to find the meaning of this PV, but I am just at a loss (x_____x)

walking proud- Again, at a loss :dead2

alterna- I kinda get this one, with the company tricking the girl into working for them, and they over-worked her, and when the new star came along, she was "thrown away" (figuratively speaking, but in the PV, literally). I seriously don't get the parts with the white room and Ayu dressed all in white, though. And the eyeball?! I have no clue XD

You were...- I get the parts with just Ayu in the big dress with the road and cardboard trees, but I just don't understand the neon StarWars people (I don't know what else to call them XD)

Ladies Night- Seriously...what's happening here? :laugh

1 LOVE- I just don't see what's going on here XD I did an interpretation of the lyrics in another thread, but it doesn't help me with the PV :laugh

There are a few that are super easy to interpret if you think hard enough though :D (i.e. BALLAD, Rule, appears, Free & Easy)

Moments, I have to agree is a little baffling. I can't come across any interpretations that are satisfying.

walking proud...this is a tough one but the world they're standing in is pretty robotic and 'fake' even though its beautiful. With everyone with that metal I think it shows that something in them keeps them from walking with their heads held high, so I think they tell lies to make things somewhat better. So many lies, or even few but from every single person, makes the world an almost fake place.

After the first chorus in the video it's like going through a metal vein through the ground. I guess this sort of talks about the life of the earth, representing what we do as what the planet is, but still made of lies. At the end of this vein or tunnel-like thing, is Ayu with the short black hair and covered in gems. I think this says that deep down, underneath all the lies and the things we make ourselves appear as, there's something beautiful and that's shining brightly.

Ladies Night baffles me I once had a thought of what 1 LOVE was on about, but for the life of me I can't remember what that thought was. It wasn't a full interpretation, just a thought. I should see that awesome PV again.

gallowsCalibrator 22nd March 2010 11:25 PM

Larisa-chan 23rd March 2010 01:48 PM

I always got confused by the PV Whatever. Like the scenes with the church and the little angel girl? I guess that the church burned down and the angel girl was wandering around and figuring out what happened, but why does she get caught in the barbed wire at the end??

I dunno, if anyone can explain Whatever, I'd be thrilled. XD

@Captain Kawaii: What I always thought what happened in 1 LOVE was that they were all trapped in cages by a man who didn't respect them for who they were, and all they wanted was 1 LOVE, but they were never given that, so they were put in a freak show. Random, but I think that may be it.

Tony G 28th March 2010 09:51 AM

alterna is not one of her hardest PVs to interpret! It actually has a pretty clear message, but told in a weird and scary way! Its one of her most powerful PVs I think. A big f u to avex. :P

For me - Mirrorcle World: I still don't know if there's any meaning behind it or whether its just random. A lot of the interpretations that came from it on this forum when it first came out seemed to be grasping onto anything to make a story out of it. Haven't been satisfied with anything I've read. Sometimes I think she just did a video to show off she went to Paris.

You were... is another recent one. Whatever the message is, its buried really deep. I kinda understood aspects of it, but not the video as a whole. Really artistically done, but hard to follow.

Maraschino 28th March 2010 11:12 AM

walking proud!!!

alterna is easy to understand, i think...
critics to the music industry and paparazzi....

and i think sometimes ayu just want to present some thought in her MV,
and it may not really relevant to the lyrics... maybe like alterna and 1 LOVE
the story is a bit seperated from her lyrics~

kotora 28th March 2010 06:42 PM

Does UNITE! and NEVER EVER Promotion video count?
They should be the most difficult because they never have an ending. Plus UNITE! is a video from Dome Tour 2001. I dont know why she use that for UNITE! ?

I found walking proud pretty straight forward. In short its about being in a 'fake' world where everyone is getting replaced by robots ('fake' beings) coming her coming to this realization and then in the end being replaced herself. So basically its about being surrounded by countless lies.

Daybreak

terra 5th April 2010 01:07 PM

In my opinion in order to understand some PVs you should relate the PV to the lyrics, it's basically her personal visualization of the song.

While some like Daybreak could be understand straightforwardly, the whole PV was taken during Daybreak in one shot I guess there's no other hidden meaning implied. Or the PV was just like an artistic way to visualize the song, e.g Born To Be...

For me the PV that I haven't found the right interpretations are WHATEVER, and kanariya.

ladies night...WTF...corridor...army...kinky stuff

i love the song but the video is so mind-boggling

I don't get how people can't seem to interpret Alterna, actually a lot clearer than most videos
