Seriously, WHY does she keep choosing these people over Kouki Tange, Wataru Takeshi etc etc or even someone completely new?? I'm not saying her directors of the past couple of years are total crap, but they could be waaay better especially considering she could basically get any director that she wants. Really makes me wonder about her judgment these days.

She has worked with the same average at best directors for like 2 years now - if nothing else, wouldn't it occur that that style just might be getting a little bit stale?

She's as much to fault for the bad productions as he is. It's supposed to be HER material after all. Someone at TA needs to tell her that just because he's a friend DOES NOT make him great, and that in the end, it looks bad on her.

It's so weird...she only uses wataru for her tour videos now and not pvs...the last one he did was decision. :(...those tour videos were so good!! Taskinst~ and I bet (don't)leave me alone was by him too.

Unfortunately that IS probably why. Its something that I've been noticing her doing more and more. Such as Takahide Ishii being someone who went to her same high school etc. That's not a good thing. When you are in her type of business, I think you should be hiring based on ability and talent, not on personal connections. Her world has become too insular imo.

That is not a good reason at all! But at the VERY least (I'm really trying to look on the bright side here...) the videos are getting slightly better. Mirrorcle World was horrid, GREEN was at least a little better... (I think the editing was more at fault than his directing...) So, we'll see how this one turns out :o

Yeah I must agree with this. I'm sick of seeing her dancers stuffed in our faces because she's such good friends with them, her terrible backup vocalists she will never get rid of and now it's annoying to see her working with directors just because they're her friends. It's arrived to the point where it's annoying because it's more like "Ayumi Hamasaki & friends" lately and unfortunately they are not as talented as they like to think they are...

I think that the fact she has so much control over her career is also turning against her. She's getting surrounded with a bunch of friends who seem to be more interested in hogging all the attention for themselves to get to the top.

my 2 least favorite PVs :weep oh well, here's to hoping it could be better. :shrug

Green was way better but still linear.

I think Ayu should work with overseas directors... Because she's known all over Asia and all over the world too, she really should try some foreign (I mean non japanese) directors to add more diversity in her world. And IMO Ayu is really the asian girl who can easily be exportable so... she should try

I kind of liked the MW PV. But she's kind of in a hard position, if she doesn't pick her friend as a director it's kind of like a slap in the face. Maybe she should input some of her ideas into it so we have less stupid stuff xD.

First time she had did trust a foreign director (Luis Fernandez) he made for her Pride and Bold and delicious, not really a success -__-

I think they're on the same level of being "average" actually. A lot of pretty/dramatic shots with nothing really impressive. In comparison Luis seems to release more natural stuff compared to the weird faces/poses with Kazuyoshi. And Kazuyoshi seems to be shooting a photoshoot which usually makes for a pretty pv but little depth... oh well.

Actually Wataru Takeishi is a hit or miss director for me. Sometimes his stuff is just awesome, other times not so interesting either... like HEAVEN was just pretty and Humming 7/4 seemed like a waste of money.

I'd actually like to see Ukon Kamimura, Tetsuo Inoue or Kouki Tange, who create these interesting videos for upbeat/dark songs.

GREEN was horrible enough..oh noo...

This director tries too hard to make those "perfect" shots.

In mirrorcle world he has that 2 seconds with the red dress and the doves

then in GREEN he has Ayumi rising for about 3 seconds (the only part that actually catches attention the whole PV)

Must be because like what people said, he used to be a photographer....

And have you guys realized in both MW and GREEN there is just a jumble of scenes..
like MW has the red dress...the eiffel tower...the feathers and then the sexy one..
and then in GREEN its her in the town, then her on the stage then the backstage then the corridors...like WTF

I like Pride cos Ayu actually shows real emotion and it just looks really nice and lovely. But Kazu's stuff .. Just ew. Im not even talking about just Ayu's stuff. I mean the stuff he's directed for Anna and other people too.

Mirrorcle World and GREEN are both very controversial PVs... i wonder why she chose him again. i, for one, am excited. i love both of those and i know i'll love whatever comes out next.

Fair enough. I thought he was a photographer recently turned into director as a hobby. I'm curious to know how long he's been directing since he really seems to lack experience and expertise.

However I think what would truly suck would be if she got Mika Noguchi to do her booklet again. All those grainy and blurred images in (m)u were terrible. Probably if someone who wasn't Ayu's friend shot those he'd be fired in an instant.

you guys are sometimes overreated U_U sorry I know that like and dislike are relevant. BUt I think MW is a nice PV, so does GREEN (just that I don't like her style, but not the video). I mean ayu herself thinks that MW PV is cool n great why you guys kept on complaining? as long as ayu looks pretty in it I don't care. Her mouth movements are OK. Really it is just fine. you can't expect ayu to sing with her mouth literally closed. In MW she's soomehow showing 'power'. so did she in Rule PV. I know for slow paced song like GREEN some of you said she's overreacting. But I guess they just wanna make it more dramatic ^^

Doesn't the director need to take care of the whole production? If the editing is bad, he should have said something (besides, he was the one directing the scenes... so probly it's hard to edit something that is bad already).

I kinda agree with B&D because it's pretty average. I think he did a better job on Pride. Also, the editing and scenes transitions are much better compared to Shimomura.

I also think MW is sorta a nice pv (not too bad... her fierceness does match the song). For the GREEN pv, I still hold up my breath against it. I can't just say I like the pv because "as long as ayu looks pretty in it". The overacting part shares some faults, but the main point is that he could not bring out what we suppose to see. Look, he just kept telling ayu to do those OVER dramatic stuff. I know probly he wanted to use the "drama" to express the meaning of the song. However, the way he chose is totally irrelevant. As a result it just makes many of us thinking ayu looks like a drama queen. Also, he did a extremely bad scene transitioning. I assume he is really good in photography (2D), but I feel like he's using such concept to make a video (3D). It doesn't work this way, and he totally ruined the pv (and the song).

And I do feel the same way about she has been using the same team over and over again. Sometimes I do feel she isolates herself from the real world. First her band, then peco and princess, then her dancers, and now even the pv directors. When was the last time her dancers and the band not showing up on lives? JEWEL, which was two years ago. I think it's hard to see ayu alone in recent years. Basically nowadays ayu = ayu + those people. It's not necessarily bad (at least to the band), but she doesn't need to bring out the dancers every single time. And now the dancers even show up in LUMIX cm. This is a bit ridiculous (and yeah... I must admit funny at the same time... seeing them on LUMIX).

It's kinda expected, ayu should look for other directors!! :/

Well, because of Idealist's interpretation of the PV, I thought MW was GENIUS. I mean, we all know Ayu isn't the most talented actress (remember her crying from HANABI ~Episode II~?), so I think the PV was to be expected. And if she likes it (which I assume since she let the PVs air in the first place), then I'm taking many are judging her taste a little too harshly.

I for one find that her recent music (especially her lyrics) have been reminiscent of the pre-I am... era. Although may be the execution (for some of you) wasn't up to par, I find her recent material a compromise of her older sounding lyrics to her new sound. It's all pretty surreal, really, kind of like a blast from a past with a dash of new.

I'm really looking forward to this next PV, because his PVs seem to have an actual storyline to it, which are my favorite kind (like RAINBOW or No way to say). Plus, the interpretation is up in the air, which is art is supposed to be (IMO): something people can see from different perspectives.

Both MW and GREEN had great settings on location, but both were wasted opportunities... Hope the director will do better this time...

I still don't get how a PV can ruin a song!!?? To me they are two totally separate things!!

Like I said, MW wasn't that bad at all. The scene transition is still a bit weird, but somehow it works (maybe because there're different ayus inside). I think most of us do notice there are meanings behind both MW and GREEN. The thing is it really shows that guy has no talent on directing pvs. The thing he wanna express was stuck in 2 dimensional, and he could not execute those ideas in 3D (well video is still 2D i guess, but it's more dynamic than just plain photos).

And I dun think it's about her taste. More likely she just wanna be working with friends. I know it is very happy to have friends surround with, but at the same time why doesn't she try for something new? Let's look closer to the dancing. First she used Peco as the choreographer, then two ladies in TRF (?), then now Jin steps in. My brother can even notice Subaru doing that self spinning dance again and again. It becomes boring to see the dances with similar elements. In addition, why does she need to dance every single time in fast songs? (Well she even dances in slower ones as well.. GREEN for example).

I know that she is taking another direction after Memorial address, like she doesn't wanna compete for awards anymore, she wanna do her own music and stuff. As a fan I'm glad she can go for that. However, I think it's time for her to reinvent herself. It's not only about her music, but also her surroundings. I so miss the pre MY STORY era when we focused only on ayu. Now she's surrounded/hidden by her dancers/peco/band/same pv directors/etc.

Oh btw I agree with you about older sounding lyrics + new sound statement. I do sense that as well. :P But I just can't describe exactly what the feeling is... I really hope NEXT LEVEL is something that can be compared with pre-Ma era.

And to a previous poster, they may be two different things, but a PV can really impact a person's perspective on a song (and vice versa). I know I liked GREEN a lot, but the horrendous PV came out and I never listened to it since haha.

Because I want to see more than just "pretty" in a PV. And she managed to move her mouth just fine in PVs before. I'm wondering if the mouth thing is totally because of Shimamura or not because she does it in the Rule PV as well or maybe she is just probably too used to doing it these days that it comes naturally to her now. :shrug

Wataru Takeshi. He did all of the great vids from AT07 and AT08 I believe. He was one of Ayu's main PV directors up until about 2 years ago when she started using her friends instead of people with actual experience.

I'm in agreement with SS...I want to see more than just a visually stunning PV.
