Woah woah no no la la?

Wanted to be a little creative with the title....anyways.
I noticed this with Ayumi's songs a while ago. She's the only artist I know that fills her songs with empty singing so often. Half of her songs are filled with "woah woah woah woah" "no no no no no no" and "lalalalala". Can she not come up with something else to put there or at least not sing during those parts? I feel like she ran out of lyrics or something. I don't mind if she does it for a few songs, but the fact that almost every album has a few of those songs where she just fills in space with empty singing kinda annoys me. Could someone enlighten me as to why she does this so frequently?

Maybe I'm just looking into this a little too much.

maikaru 16th May 2009 05:12 AM

It depends on the song..
I think most of the time, these parts completely fit the song!! ^^)
Especially evolution, is this LOVE?, etc.

And I like that it shows that she can adlib~

love in music 16th May 2009 05:14 AM

yeah it's probably just to fill up the song and make it catchier etc. those parts are usually my favorite parts of her songs :D
"wow yeah wow yeah" - evolution
"la la la la la la la la la la la" - MY ALL
"no no no" - Sparkle
"wow wow wow wow oh no no no no" - STEP you
"dala dala dala" - EnergizE

pommy48 16th May 2009 05:14 AM

i actually really like them, i mean for the start of moments, if she doesn't do anything, then it just feels like a long intro~

and 3 no's isn't that many anyways XD

Delirium-Zer0 16th May 2009 05:21 AM

I like them when they feel natural.... like where she's conveying emotion without words. Being that I listen mostly to music whose language I don't understand, these don't bother me at all :P

But when she sounds like she's forcing out the la la la's or whatever (like in newer versions of "Who..." - I felt the original's "lala"s and "aah"s were VERY effective, but every re-recording or live performance since 2001 has had them feel forced), well then I don't buy it and I don't like it.

As for when they're actual words like "yeah" and "no," I think they're fine. They're good confirmations & strong denials. :) They get kinda repetitive at times (like "Sparkle"'s "no no no"), but if the song surrounding them is really good, I overlook it very easily.

ownsarai 16th May 2009 05:21 AM

I love those parts of her songs. There's nothing wrong with it, in my opinion.

NintendoHTF1242 16th May 2009 05:54 AM

Ad-libbing is used in most songs. It's just a nice way to show off a singers voice and make the song flow better.

waterballoon 16th May 2009 06:05 AM

No no no~ is the catchiest part of Sparkle IMO.

Ayu_no_tenshi 16th May 2009 06:33 AM

other artists, particularly american artists do it all the time....so why can't ayu???

Yum!Fruit_Salad! 16th May 2009 06:48 AM

YA YA YA GA GA GA DA DA DA WOAH WOAH WOAH♪

'nuff said xD.

douggn 16th May 2009 06:49 AM

I hear a lot of songs which do this, but for ayu, listen to the songs its in and it sound better with these parts than what it would be with word I think :P

rookies 16th May 2009 06:57 AM

I like the part in "Teens" when she sings:

"I want to be a sweet angel, la la la la..." (and then more la's after that)

:heart

foxhana 16th May 2009 07:27 AM

she's the first person i know who usese "GA" most others use "LA" , "DA" and even "HAHAHA". hahahah.

noidea 16th May 2009 07:13 PM

Well, its using voice as instrument without lyrics, so you can completely concentrate on the voice, it sometimes fits perfectly, the beginning of Moments is HEAVEN(xD), I think if she sang lyrics instead of la lalalalala..... it would have been a little weird, same with is this LOVE?(wooooooow yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah....sounds better than lyrics for that part of the song i think) and so many other songs, it only sucks in girlish^^

JackieRos 16th May 2009 08:31 PM

I really like them they go well

i love Free & Easy
oh oh oh lala lala oooooh lalala
oooooooh tokidoki jibun ni toikakeru
aaaaaaaaah doko made ikeba tadoritsuku no

PinkShinigami 16th May 2009 08:37 PM

I did only notice it when a friend said it. And truly, she fills it with a lot of "voice sounds". But well, I don't think about it ^^

ImpactBreaker 16th May 2009 09:07 PM

She's definitely not the only artist who fills her songs with empty words. Many pop artists do that actually. If well used, I think these elements can make the whole musical sound interesting. I once saw a music critic complaining that the empty words were ridiculous and showed amateurism. I personally think as a critic, he was the amateur professional, and needed to (re)learn what music is about.

noidea 16th May 2009 09:15 PM

^ Thats the same I sometimes think when reading critics as well, I mean: instruments NEVER use words, and nobody complains about that xD The voice is an instrument as well after all, so why shouldnt it make the "pure" form of music, without language and understandable for all people?

Andrenekoi 16th May 2009 09:58 PM

There is a lot of music critics that doens't really know much about music... Can't sing, don't play any instrument, never studied music...

extepan 17th May 2009 03:01 AM

these are catchy, so i like them.

dreamland2.0 17th May 2009 03:50 AM

I thought that when I first started listening to her.
She likes to 'la'!!!
But I honestly love those parts to bits!!!
I like how it's a signature vocal thing for her!!

chloeM 17th May 2009 09:09 AM

i love how ayu did to Sparkle with No No No....

Tasked 17th May 2009 10:29 AM

Sometimes there could be a deeper meaning.

yaya gaga dada wowwow..

1) first. yaya, she's born!!!
2) she says her first words. gaga
3) ayu grows up and changes. dada
4) she is grown up and amazes everyone: wow wow!!

It's actually representative for Ayu's growth as an artist from being a child to becoming an adult. ;)

waterballoon 17th May 2009 10:51 AM

^ LMAO.

Oh I forgot to mention that my favorite part of Bold & Delicious is...

YAYAYAYA GAGAGAGA DADADADA WHOAWHOAWHOAWHOA!

@ Rody: :roflmao So funny, hehe. :laugh

Ayumi_lover 17th May 2009 10:56 AM

Well this words sometimes really makes deep meaning
like in And then, or evolution.
in Free&Easy it makes mood, makes you flow into the song with strong voice.

Actually...you'd be surprised how many people dislike music that doesn't have any words...

when we would listen to classical music...people would always complain that there's no words...

I think...yeah the average person doesn't really appreciate music for it's MUSIC only.

Words are important to a lot of people...

I never had a problem with the "filler" english she uses lol I never noticed it lol

noidea 17th May 2009 11:39 AM

Actually, I'm a person which rates the words very high as well, but I like seemingly meaningless(jajajajadadadadagagagagawowowowo) words better than total crap thats just written because a song needs lyrics(or sex) for people to like it.I prefer instrumentals over songs with bad lyrics often, argh, I dont know how to explain xD

yoshino 18th May 2009 06:07 AM

hmmm. I like tat actually.. it fills the song in a nice way imo.

But not for Bold & Delicious pls!!

AyUta 18th May 2009 07:18 AM

They don't bother me at all, just when she gets too over dramatic :P

ya ya ya ya ga ga ga ga da da da da wo wo wo wo

was good..it's horrible to me, it ruined the song

Ayumi27 18th May 2009 07:17 PM

:D
I love her when she uses the "no, la, da, yeah, wow...", specially Who..., evolution, Bold & Delicious & UNITE!

tommy96814 19th May 2009 12:09 AM

moments lol

panda♥ 19th May 2009 01:43 AM

the "hira hira hira hira" and "yura yura yura yura" parts of Will almost sound like fillers. XD

Picaflor 7/4 19th May 2009 03:57 AM

it doesn't work in some songs. Moments opening is just extended. 50 seconds of just lalala gets annoying after a while. Yes it does work in some songs, but idk could she make some songs when she doesn't adlib? try to avoid it for at least one album?

pommy48 19th May 2009 04:01 AM

oh yeah, what does hira and yura mean?@_@

Kingdom 19th May 2009 04:09 AM

i just think of it as a toned down adlibbing.

i love adlibbing!!!!

kendelle 19th May 2009 04:14 AM

I never felt those spots were "empty". I really like how she uses YA GA DA WOAH YEAH NO OH NO LA in her songs :yes

I don't know what she'd fill those spots with but I don't think it would add any more to the song than the "filler words". I love the way she sings them <3

Embleu 19th May 2009 05:26 AM

For the most part, I hate filler words, but Bold & Delicious's opening = :love

Quote:

I'm pretty sure they're onomatopoeia for petals falling (hira) and something swaying (yura).

zyoeru 19th May 2009 07:14 AM

^ For will there's also: kira and kura.
Which (correct me if I'm wrong) are:
Kurakura: something that is dizzying, like the dizzying brightness of the sun.
Kirakira: something that is sparkling. :)

They aren't fillers. Proper..."words" haha.

But I like it when Ayu adlibs. :P

kira kira, hira hira etc are onomatopoeias...

for example kira kira is the onomatopoeia for shining.. :yes

keikeiaznqueen 19th May 2009 11:23 AM

I actually really like most of Ayu's empty lyrics.

LOVE 'n' HATE's "Haihaihaihai" sound was new. XD Has Ayu ever used "hai hai"s before?

Also, I'm a big fan of Bold & Delicious' "yagadawo" so no complaints there. :D

Sometimes, Ayu uses these filler lyrics to set the mood for the song, such as that in Who... and Free & Easy. Even SEASONS' "lai lai" just before the chorus. It's quite beautiful I think.

Oh yes, how can I forget to throw in Moments?

Chef+Vanny 19th May 2009 01:36 PM

Thanks for that :D Best reply I've read in a long time!

I feel the same way about movies. Why do people complain when there is no "story" or "plot" or "dialogue"? The purest form of film is the image. Story, plot, and dialogue are literary not cinematic qualities, and even then the purest form of literature is the word.

And like Kendelle said, I never found those words in Ayu's songs "empty" (if I understand correctly what the original poster means by empty = empty of meaning) and thus "filler". Exactly the opposite. The meaning of these words is not found in any literary meaning but in the sound they create and the emotion they convey.

Picaflor 7/4 21st May 2009 05:37 AM

You can't honestly be telling me you love it every single time she does it. -_-
Yes I mean filler. Like a "let me not keep atleast 10 seconds of just instrumental in any song"
Yes it does work in some songs, like B&D, but in other songs, I feel like she could have left it out like in sparkle or Moments.

I've already told you what I think about it. I'm not going to change your mind.

It's not a question of whether or not I love it, but whether or not it works in the song. I feel it's necessary in Moments. Instead of using some other instrument to, as you say, "fill in the void" in the song, they use Ayu's voice as that instrument. I think any other instrument would sound incongruous, too heavy (an electric guitar, for example) or too light (like a flute) in something so midtempo. The voice strikes a good balance, especially since Moments is a song with the vocals as the centerpiece. The instrumentation in the song is really only a guide for Ayu's vocals, which determine the movement and texture here, unlike, say, Free & Easy, wherein it's the instrumentation that moves the song forward. Without Ayu's voice in those parts, Moments would just sound weaker. Ayu's voice adds texture, and if she had put lyrics instead of la la la, then that would really be filler. What else can be added to the words she's trying to convey? It's enough as it is.

Well, I think the fillers work, our singing voice is what a chirp is to a bird. It's just an instrument, and it should be used. Not really empty.
Plus the ad libbing for B&D is so~ catchy. :)

People just find whatever they can to complain about Ayu imo. xD

gogoayu 22nd May 2009 11:57 PM

I for one LOVE those parts. they are the BEST!!

Sparkle's NO NO NO is so damn catchy and sexy. everytime i hear it i just go "no no no"

gogoayu 27th May 2009 04:06 AM

LOL!!! but to be honest, i think her "la la la" adds to a carefree kind of feeling to the song... same with "whoa yea...".

"no no no" in step you and sparkle makes it so sexy, ya know? hahaha a whole album of laaaa laa laaaa hilarious. but i'll still buy.

I don't know any lesbian or straight man who wouldn't find her sexy. Just look at her.

You really don't need to show your crotch and and "ride" a beer bottle to the beat of hip hop music to be considered sexy.

Ayu is a natural at exuding sex appeal with her eyes, her body, without being contrived.

noidea 30th May 2009 11:54 AM

actually, i think the pic you posted is one where she isnt very sexy(her face is, her body isnt) because to me she looks like shem feels unconfortable(or however you write it) in that pose, but she can look REALLY hot

gogoayu 30th May 2009 12:25 PM

and i'm not exactly talking about facial expression or body pose, i'm talking ayu as a woman. my point is, how can any man not find her sexually appealing. just look at her.

I don't have a collection of pictures so I can't post a better one, but there are performances, PVs and photoshoots were she looks way sexier IMO(without heaving her breast exactly in the MIDDLE of the image xD)

gogoayu 31st May 2009 10:34 AM

it's funny because i found none of those pics sexy. some kind of cute, some remind me of tila tequila, and they're all on the submissive side. i guess it all depends on what we perceive as sexy, those pics i guess I can consider them "sexy" in a cutesy girly way. well then you have bad taste. cause I'm gay too and I found none of those attractive. the first two look like she's saying "am I sexy now? am I doing this right?" the third is....idk...and the last is midly seductive, but actually looks comfortable. nice try though. Different people finds different things sexy... and there are a lot of ways of portraiting someone as sexy and not everyone is going to like it...

By the way... I hate Step you cover, but Blue Bird is pretty HOT IMO

I think gay people can find women hot, sure, we are not physically attracted to them, but we can still see that they are hot, I hate Step You cover as well because shes trying too hard and end up looking like a ... well, not very classy anymore xD

Guess what! I'm gay too :B
I hate Step you photoshot, cause she seens to be totaly out of place there... But I find Ayu very sexy sometimes... I just think that Step you cover and PV are terrible examples... But maybe that was the idea...

IMO she is very sexy in because of you, alterna, mirrorcle world, ourselves, inspire (when using casual outfit), greatful days, game, is this love, my name's women, fairyland, pride, ladies night, evolution, startin', 1love, green, rule, next level, sparkle, surreal, appears videos... And in the last 3 tours (at06, at07 and at08). She just isn't sexy in the same way in all those... sometimes is that "I'M HOT ;D" thing, sometimes it's a carefree sexiness and so on... there is not only one way of being sexy

probably cause ayumi is a homo magnet, next to britney spears, madonna, cher, kylie minogue, and...utada....maybe? not sure.

anyone realize that ayumi is soooo sexy when she's not trying?

step you cover is not sexy she's trying too hard, "am I sexy now? am I doing this right?"
vs.
bluebird cover is sexy cause she's being natural and is relaxed. "yeah you know you want more of this. come and get it."

also I'm gay, but i find her unite single to be sexy. I'd so do it with her on that beach in that photoshoot. probably cause besides the nails she looks like a guy, but that's the only time i ever was sexually attracted to a woman. when ayu looks like a guy (sorta) XD

I almost fell of my chair after I read your UNITE! comment...I didnt have that thought, maybe because Im not into girly men, dont know...I think UNITE! is a beautiful shot...beautiful, not sexy in any way though, Maros version is better^^

sooo love this pic. like I said. so do her in a minute, gay or not, in this. but its also the only time I ever found her sexually attractive. She needs to be a man for the record. >.> She'd sooooo be hot.

Wow, this thread has gotten a little off track! :laugh Um... "no no no!!! yea yea yea!!!"

Picaflor 7/4 6th June 2009 09:37 PM

might I suggest we for our next ahs contest rewrite lyrics to any song and only use adlibbing? lolol
step you: "woah woah woah woah, so no no no no" repeatx1000 till song is over.
that would be funny. but I suggest she just leaves the song empty. or maybe even fill it with english every once in a while that wouldn't kill her considering to this day she doesn't have a single japanese title song and didn't sing in english till her 5th album. (kanariya, hanabi, etc. don't count, they're written in romaji, and graduation picture is just a cover so its not even hers. :P)

I found her ad-libbing to be super annoying in Moments quite frankly

LALALALLALALLALALALALLA*breath*LALALALALLALALALALL ALA*breath*LALALALLALALA

I dunno, I just hated it xD

noidea 7th June 2009 10:01 AM

^ And I love that one xD
Especially if you watch her AT05 performance of Moments...I just love the beginning of it with the la's

zyoeru 7th June 2009 11:22 AM

^ I love the Moments ad libbing too! It's so...it adds to the effect! :D

I like it when she performed kiss o' kill and she was like:

"WHOA OHH OHH! WHOA OHH OHH!"

It was very exciting. xD

that one really set high exspections for the performance, I prefer the "live version" with the yeahs over the "studio version"^^ They should have released an extended version with the intro+the yeahs+the longer instrumental in the middle
