lady gaga being kawaii in japan

i am posting this bc i saw a lot of people saying she is being "culturally insensitive" by wearing the outfit she has on (which is lolita + ganguro make-up jsyk) and i would like to know how ahs feels about this :yes

Kingdom 11th June 2009 05:38 AM

:laugh x10. She does look kind of... bad.

I don't think it's insensitive, I just think she's wearing what she wants to wear. She's not known for dressing in low key outfits, right? So she probably saw some Japanese fashion and decided she'd try it out. *shrug*

AyUta 11th June 2009 05:55 AM

Oh yeah, I just read an article on this :).

Lady Gaga? Lady Lolita?
JinraIlustrisimo on Wednesday, June 10, 2009 11:29AM

My dearly beloved Lady Gaga has arrived in Japan this week to perform and promote her hit album, “The Fame.” The reigning pop princess, paid homage to Japanese style by donning a lolita-inspired dress and Ganguro girl-influenced make-up. Not taking cues from Gwen Stefani, no Lolitas or Ganguro girls were harmed in the process of dressing (or promoting) Lady Gaga. Next up? Hopefully Japanese talk shows and most definitely Korea. Perhaps, she’ll talk with Dambi Son again?

asmAyumi1992 11th June 2009 09:40 AM

wow. I think, she is one of Ayu's fan. I hope so :meditate

~ayu-cake~ 11th June 2009 09:52 AM

Culturally insensitive?
I don't think so :/

nemesisyume 11th June 2009 10:05 AM

the sounds don't work on my computer so could someone just tell me what she sais and so :laugh

I think she looks ok :P

Corybobory 11th June 2009 10:19 AM

What is the argument for her being culturally insensitive? Being white and liking Japanese subcultures' styles? :S

aqua_crystal 11th June 2009 10:49 AM

What's with her creepy eye make-up? It resembled Ayu's ourselves look.:P Especially when she wore that traditional Japanese dress.

LOL. My friend was like "eek she's so ugly here!"... :roflmao

Corvina 11th June 2009 11:04 AM

Culturally insensitive?
Maybe people are saying that because combining Lolita with Manba make up is a thing japanese would never do. And she really looks like she has no clue what she's wearing in this video. :laugh
I wonder if she could explain what she's wearing but I doubt it.
Probably she just saw examples of Lolita and manba/gyaru and decide to wear them herself.

Corybobory 11th June 2009 12:20 PM

^yeah, but what did the lolitas and manbas do? Read up about it? Should someone have to be able to talk about the history of their style or just wear what they like?

Well, I think that's the point for most people.
Probably Lady Gaga never wears one of this styles again, I'm sure she just wears them because she was in Japan. Lolita and Manba are typical japanese and there is a lot of background why it developed as it has... :shrug
I just wanna explain why I think people call her culturally insensitive.
It's kind of respecting a foreign culture not to wear any style you see because it looks nice.

Sandre 11th June 2009 01:44 PM

Lady Gaga is so pretty.
But Ooh, her eye shadow so thick. But she looks cool.

[taskin.ayu] 11th June 2009 01:57 PM

Lady GaGa's fashion is always different to the norm, so I can see why she mixed two different styles. She won't just settle for the standard style. I can see why it can be considered insensitive to some people, but I just see it as her typical self. XD

Doesn't make the makeup any less ugly though. D:

JackieRos 11th June 2009 02:05 PM

*Petit* 11th June 2009 04:19 PM

LOL about the cultural insensitive part! Manba's "Blacking up" is not "culturally insensitive" in the first place by that sort of thinking?

I think she looks great in the video. Her kimono is divine.

happiholic★ 11th June 2009 05:14 PM

I don't think that she's culturally insensitive. I bet she doesn't really know that manba and lolita almost never mix, but even if she did, I doubt she actually trying to be either one of the styles, just experimenting while she is in Japan. As long as she doesn't try to pass it off as "Harajuku" or anything similar, like Gwen, I'm fine with it.

JackieRos 11th June 2009 06:01 PM

^Gwen did a better job

happiholic★ 11th June 2009 07:21 PM

But, Lady Gaga isn't trying to pass this off as a real style in Japan. Gwen is, and she's wrong. Don't get me wrong, I love Gwen. I went to see her live for my birthday, but it bugs me the way she is trying to show off this Harajuku fashion, when it isn't Harajuku fashion. To me, if you are gonna act like you love it so much, you should at least get a little info on it.

jbrat2219 11th June 2009 07:23 PM

LOL @ The frightened lady when Gaga took off her glasses!

JackieRos 11th June 2009 07:26 PM

^Gwen is showing the people that she likes it
and unless you're a real harajuku girl, no one can portray them right
I think Gwen does a good job IMO well idk much about Harajuku
so i'll shut up now

fantasma3c 11th June 2009 07:28 PM

I personally dislike Lady Gaga shes flipping ugly!

Andrenekoi 11th June 2009 07:32 PM

I don't she is doing anything but trying some new local style... not wrong with this... jpop fans just should be less defensive about Japan stuff... It's not like she is kicking a japanese sacred thing or talking bad about them, it's just a dress and make-up...

About Gwen... that was not harajuku fashion, that's why her own heird fashion with references of harajuku fashion... and this is pretty common when talking about design...

You don't need to shut up. It's interesting to hear other people's opinions.

I think that if she wanted to "portray them right" she could have hired real girls dressing in Harajuku fashions. I guess what bugs me the most is that she isn't calling a spade a spade, you know? If she wants to say it's Harajuku inspired fashion, that is totally fine, but she makes it seem, to me at least, like she is trying to pass them off as real Harajuku fashion. If I had to give them a Japanese sub-culture, I'd say these girls are B-Kei. And they hang out in a totally different district of Tokyo. Type Harajuku into Google images, and the stuff you get looks nothing like the girls dancing around Gwen.

JackieRos 11th June 2009 08:30 PM

gwen said once that she got inspired by the japanese fashion and wanted to combine it with western fashion. =o

she described her fashion as harajuku meets christian dior.

^As long as she says she's just inspired, than I'm okay with that, I really love her and her music. Although, I must say that this is good thing for Japan, because it does spark interest in the country for more than just Anime, and a lot of Western high-fashion looks start out in Japan.

Although, I do think that Lady Gaga is just as good, and despite that her manba make-up looks horrible, I think she looks really good in lolita. Better than most foreigners.

:( Why she just can't keep her old style in Japan too.. I mean I bet her fans in Japan would like to see her in her personal style more than using Japanese styles...

LOL. Okay, so if every western person that dresses in a japanese fashion is being culturally insensitive, then there would be a lot of lame otaku from america that would be threw into the melting pot with her.

and, hell, we all might be culturally insensitive if japanese isnt our first language and we are listening to their music. i mean, its a japanese thing right? >w>

this is pretty much the exact reason why i saw people calling her culturally insensitive.. and then some flaming weeaboos obsessed with lolita fashion said you have to follow rules and they don't want people to think this is what lolita is, ect.

she didn't say what she's wearing is lolita, and it's just clothes.. she looks ridiculous but imo she should be able to wear w/e she wants.

I mean...I don't really expect anyone to look good when mixing lolita with ganguro or whatever she's mixing...but...uh...damn...

I personally would have preferred her to do hime-kei or something...

It's just a little too much, and she looks awful and sounds like she's ignorant...

but i dont know whatever.

I completely share your opinion. It's silly to say a fashion can only be worn by certain people with certain knowledge and in a certain unchanged way... it's just fashion for gosh sakes... it's art. There shouldn't be rules, no? You can't 'do it wrong'...

Bad Wolf 12th June 2009 10:06 AM

I don't think there's ever really been a time where GaGa's looked good. It all sorta seems like varying degrees of "WTF?" But like, WTF? in the sense that she's intentionally being provocative with her fashion, or WTF? as in "did she leave the house/dressing room without looking into a mirror?" I think these outfits are the latter D:

Kingdom 13th June 2009 07:00 AM

i think she is being culturally insensitive by looking like a burnt potato

PinkShinigami 13th June 2009 08:48 AM

You know, exactly this is the reason that it's called a LOLITA DOLLY

I LOVE lolita style, but I also HATE people who use it like this TO DEATH! Then it's like.. the worst style IN THE WORLD! I think I seriously prefer EVERYTHING to this!

I thought she was creepy with the glasses.. oh how wrong I was..

hpg23 13th June 2009 12:37 PM

I donīt get all the big fuss about this, people take things way too seriously, no one is going to die from seeing Lady Gaga in Japan xD

Gaga's make up (in general) reminds me of Japanese Visual Kei artists to be honest. Her clothes are a hit or miss to me. But besides the intense make up here, she doesn't look that bad as a lolita.

WHAT THE **** DID YOU DO TO YOUR FACE WOMAN?!??!

i understand we're talking about lady gaga, and therefore she can sometimes go crazy, but SERIOUSLY. that eyeshadow's how thick again? and then the shiny stuff underneath the black eyeshadow? yeah, drawing attention to your panda eyes are NOT helping.

the dress was cute. the skin was eh. the eyeshadow was BLEGH

she looked cuter in the hello kitty outfit. i don't think she's culturally whatever. and what the hell does that mean anyway?? she's being racist? she's trashing the look? (ignore the horrid makeup for one sec here) i think it's probably more that she's culturally aware, noticing the cute outfits that she can't normally find in america.

just my 2 cents. feel free to dissect and torture however you like ^_^

emi♡ 19th June 2009 07:33 AM

doesn't the make up go with the look though?

Are there "rules" or something to looking as awful as those japanese girls do?

ugh I HATE that fashion with passion.

brand new love 19th June 2009 07:39 AM

i think there might be "rules". the girls who were angry that she was wearing the outfit said you should never mix different styles together, like lolita and ganguro.. but i doubt any of them have been near a japanese person let alone been to japan so idk how true it is.
