Pop Queens

I’m very interested in the “Pop Queen” kind of singer... I would like even to write an essay about it some years in the future... To me the “Pop Queen” image is a female solo singer who can more than produce good music, turn into a cultural icon of a country or a langague with the years... They are multimidea divas that even being bashed by critics and media, have great creative control over their careers, are recognized as top performers and as symbols of how na entire era works and how people on this era thinks and see the world. I could recognize some artists that IMO have done it into their own cultures (they usually have a great amount of their own culture influencing their pop music, concerts and vídeos), but I don’t know enough singers in the world to complete my list... So I think that would be nice to post it here and ask you if you know any other singers from all around the world that afforded that over the years^^ Hopes the text didn’t bored anyone xD

I would love to know some african, mid-eastern, etc. singers that play this role on their own cultures! So, this is a topic where we can change impressions about this kind of artist!^^

I don't really pay attention to the tittle... But gotta admit that in terms of fame, sales, popularity, longevity, creativity, shows, re inventions and everything else, there's only one "queen", MADONNA

Then you can talk about "regional queens"

noidea 27th June 2009 05:26 PM

^ well, the title "pop queens" doesnt specify if they are regional or international, so thats no problem.

german pop queen would definitly be Nena.
she is most famous for her second single 99 Luftballons(or in its english version: 99 Red Balloons) which topped the charts of many countrys in the world
she was quite succesful in the 80 and had a good comeback in the 2000s(including one #1 single in 2005)
well, it wasnt really a comeback because she was never completely out of the business, she always released stuff, but it was kind of quiet about her in the 90s, she was mostly known for her concerts(because of all the old songs) and tv appereances in different shows

for japanese pop queens,i would add Kuu, I think her style and attitude is a big influence in japan and people will remember her
Seiko Matsuda, we all know why
Namie Amuro, but i dont consider her nearly as much of a pop queen than the others, i dont get that vibe from her LOL

pommy48 27th June 2009 05:29 PM

^ i can see namie as a pop queen, she definitely affected the fashion of Japan

waterballoon 27th June 2009 05:34 PM

Interesting thread. I have nothing to contribute... but I'll just read the posts here... for now lol.

well, i dont know her much so i rather guessed, but she had an amazing comeback, didnt she?

aloopy 27th June 2009 07:25 PM

yep i can see namie as a pop queen as well.
she's been here for a long time.. it's almost her 20th anniversary :thud

but then again, japan has several pop queens imo.
seiko ofcourse, ayu, i can see kumi as a jpop queen as well.
there are probably some others that i don't know of lol

as for western pop queens, madonna is definitely the queen of queens.

As I see... Madonna is HUGE worldwide, but she is not huge when you take local sales in any place of the world... It's like... she sells good in a lot of countries, but she doesn't sells amazingly well in any. But there are those female singers that afect regions just like her, they are not huge worldwide, but they have staying power and are praised for almost the same things where they act^^ To me, Madonna is without any doubt the Pop Queen, and any other singer that is a "regional queen" is aways compared to her like "brazilian Madonna", "japanese Madonna", "french Madonna". And to me, while Mariah is huge, her career is more music oriented than anything... She is trying nowadays to use her image and stuff like that to stay in the bussiness, but let's be honest: in the end, what really works for her is her music... not videos, fashion, concerts, controversies... pretty much like Utada^^

I would not put Koda as a pop queen cuz her fame is somewhat recent, I think that she needs some more time... Seiko's fame is very past oriented... I watched a concert from her, and everyone in the audience seens to be on their 40 or older...

Namie vs Ayu is a very old discussion... I think that Ayu had and has a bigger cultural impact (in more aspectd than Namie, as I see her more as a fashion leader and speakperson... while I can see Ayu affecting Japan with her videos, concerts, music, lyrics, attitude, themes, etc) and a more steady fame... But I can't deny Namie's staying power and cultural impact either^^

mcluva420 28th June 2009 12:57 AM

I feel like J-pop artists mainly influence asia, but American artists seem to influence the world (maybe English is the universal language, idk) .

and, yes, it is Mariah's MUSIC that has inspired us all. (..ehh no wonder ppl say hikki is like her xP) She has totaly staying power in the music industry.

Miku 28th June 2009 12:36 PM

Madonna/Kylie Minogue/Whitney Houston - America
Ayu/Koda Kumi/Namie Amuro - Japan
Fey - Mexico

And it was full of brazilians, argentins, and all kind of south-americans who were adoring her!

Impossible Princess was retitled to Kylie Minogue in the UK as it was released a few months after the death of Princess Diana.
Actually I think she said that the cover wouldn't have Impossible Princess on it, but that was still the name of the album. So technically she has had 3 self titled albums.
