Namie's been through hell and back, which is probably why she's #1 here. Divorced, single mother, with a dead mother due to a relative going crazy or w/e... aie.

Ayu's also been through a lot (no father in her life, broke up with longtime boyfriend, friend died recently, lost hearing in one ear, broken hand during a live, etc etc.) but I don't think Ayu's troubles can outdo Namie's at all.

"Gorgeous" and "charisma" were used to describe Ayu, and that she had a kakkoii / cool appearance.

Her mother was brutally murdered by her brother-in-law on the same releasing day(17th March 99) of her 12th single "Respect the Power of Love". Namie cancelled promotion for this single and flew to Okinawa to identify her mother's body.
Since then she had never returned to her hometown Okinawa, until late 2006 on her Live Style Tour 2006, she's came back to perform after many years & cried alot when performing "NEVER END" there. Not to mention the lyric of the song itself is very touching, NEVER END lyric


That's why I always respect the power of Namie, she's such a strong woman.

Just out of interest..why do you think that? I mean...Namie and Ayu have had much harder lives than Kumi.
Ayu came from a broken home, lost her ear, left her boyfriend of God knows how many years.
Namie also came from a broken home, is now divorced, and had her mother murdered.

I don't think Kumi can quite compare with that LOL.

Well... I think Kuu had a pretty bad start to her career as well... Max called her 'fat', he didn't like her much in the beginning as well I think.

She also gave chocolates to the avex staff during Valentine's but they never gave anything back to her... which is really mean.

She was also used as a guinea pig for marketing to use sex as an image... regardless if it's successful, you can't deny they used Kuu has a ... test.

And also the fluid scandal last year... even if it's her fault... but in the end she pulled through and is doing well now! ^^

Anyways her scandal, etc really has nothing to do with it because its not a popularity contest, its who they think "lives the best way of life". She has a lot of money so it makes sense for her to be high up since most people believe $ = ( :) ).

EDIT: But now reading through the previous pages, it seems people are taking this as a "who has been through more" poll? I understood it differently I guess. Best way of life = how much **** you've been through and over come?

I'm reading Namie's mom's book... pretty interesting. Namie and ayu deserve the rankings they got :)

I can't believe Namie has gone through all of that, it's so sad. I had no idea ( :weep ).

^ Yeah, I feel bad for Namie, about her mother. So even though I'm not a fan, I'll admit she deserves top stop for this one. Though Ayu is definitely really close. She came up from literally nothing. And just when it seemed like things were finally going her way, something bad would happen. That's happened to her a few times now (illness, deaths, etc.)...

On another note, the Kumi thing... I'm a Kumi fan, but I can safely say that, despite the fact that she is very~ talented in singing, she got very lucky. Sex sells no matter who you are; it's all about whether or not you think it's worth putting yourself out like that. Apparently, she thinks so. (Which isn't a huge deal, since she's not doing porn or anything, lol. :lech) But that is truly the main reason she's so popular. She has a wonderful voice - great lung power and a pretty good range - but a lot of people don't like her voice in general. And she was kinda chubby when she was younger (I wouldn't consider her "fat," by any means, but she obviously could've stood to lose a few pounds). And without heaps of makeup she isn't anywhere close to the sex symbol Avex advertises her as... So yeah, Kumi is actually a very typical pop star. Doesn't deserve a spot on this particular chart, especially against Ayu and Namie Amuro.

In Japan, if you give someone a Valentine's gift and they don't return it, it is considered rude and a major snub.

Well, she wasn't very liked when she gave them chocolates, was she? I'm not saying that those people were nice, just that... They didn't like her, she tried to own some attention by giving them chocolate, and failed... Were they right? No... Do I feel pity for her because of that? No

^ Yeah, not being liked doesn't mean you have a hard life, lol. The fact that she wasn't well liked just proves how fortunate she really is, to be able to make it as a star when nobody likes what you have to offer.

EDIT: lol at the Kumi discussion. Here's my 2 cents. She's been through a lot to get to where she is now too, just like any other artist, so people snubbing her and just making it like whoever uses sex to sell is instantly famous, need to back off a bit. Others have tried to do what Kumi did and failed. She actually has talent which is something and really if she used a way to make herself more known then I say good for her :shrug. I'm not saying she should have been on this poll because I'm sure there are a lot more artists that have been through worse but really, some people need to be less harsh :/

I'm not saying she should be at the top of the list or something - Namie deserves that. :) I was just pointing out that in the culture of Japan, it is common to give your male coworkers a gift on Valentine's Day. (so its not like something incredibly special that she did in order to get attention) Then they are supposed to return the favor by giving you a gift on White Day a month later - whether you might particularly like the person or not. It is just considered polite and well mannered and of course the Japanese are very meticulous when it comes to that kind of thing. So to not receive something in return speaks more to the fact that Avex really didn't seem to care about her one way or the other at that time, not necessarily that those people didn't like her personally.

Honestly, I believe it all came down to her looks because her singing and dancing is better than a lot of people out there.(I'm not even really a Koda fan, but I can still admit that she has some talent in that area) She didn't have the looks of a pop star, so Avex really didn't think she had selling potential until they came up with the whole Ero-Kakkoi angle. In this instance I don't look down on her for using sex to sell because she had been trying hard to make it from a very young age based on her talent and not her looks. For example, I'm sure her face was the reason she didn't get put into Morning Musume when she auditioned, not a lack of talent. Its unfortunate in the pop industry that you basically have to be a knock out or sex it up to really sell - but that is something that society decided, not Koda Kumi.

I know this culture trait, but I really doubt she gave them chocolate just cuz she is really a nice person with so much love deep inside her heart... She wanted them to have a more friendilly attitude towards her and failed... I'm not saying that it was easy for her and her story is one of the reason why I dislike avex... But any pop singer anywhere in the world needs to overcome this stuff in order to get as famous as she got

^ Well even so, at least she's making an effort? And whether I want to be friendly to people, or really have that much love (lol), I would still be hurt if people... just ignore it or something... it's a really insulting gesture imo. I don't think working in a company where almost everyone dislikes or ignores you for a couple of years is even an "easy" life, but that's my opinion too. :)
