IMO - If she had talent she wouldn't have to do the things she does to sell records. If she had talent she'd play an instrument (performing), or write her own lyrics (something beyond "Oh baby do my now" anyone could write something like that) or music. If she had talent they wouldn't mess with her voice so much when they record. Listen to someone like Norah Jones, and then listen to Britney, and you can tell every single note that comes out of Britney's mouth is altered. Basically, Britney has no more talent than a stripper.

She's rich.. point? I know tons of talented people that aren't rich. Being an actor, I've done lots of work with people who have more talent than Britney, but who will never become rich or famous. Why? Because they have something called INTEGRITY. They're not willing to show their body every five seconds to make a buck. They care about their art, their skill, and that's all that matters.

I wasn't comparing them as artists there's nothing to even dream of comparing. I'm saying look at someone who's voice isn't 90% studio and compare it to someone who's voice is. I've seen live performances of Norah Jones and she sounds identical to her CD. Not Britney.

I don't really have any problems with Britney. Yeah, her sex appeal has been a huge force in her career (let's not forget that her first photoshoot for Rolling Stone back in spring of 99 really caused a commotion), but I have enjoyed her three albums. It doesn't hurt that I'm a mark for producer Max Martin. I'm hoping the tracks she did with BT appear on her new set.

Artists generally make more money through endorsements than actual record sales. They only get a small percentage of the actual sales from their album. This just means Briteny sold out more than the average "singer".

Britney has done ads for Pepsi and those rollerskate/shoe things. So a huge chunk of her money probably comes from those contracts.

She appeals to the LCD. Sex, superficial lyrics, standard pop music. It sells, it's a formula. You could substitute any number of good-looking people in place of Britney and they could, and most likely, would be just as sucessful. That's what the music industry does, they come up with something they know sells and copy it a million times over.

Yup, I agree too that well, if an artiste is willing to get all down naked and dirty and it sells, then why not. In the music industry, they talk money, not about image and stuffs.

Regardless of whether she actually has talent or not, it all still boils down to integrity, something which Britney lacks. Any real artist who knows that millions of fans imitate her in practically aspect should know that she's setting an example (or in her case, a lack of). It's one thing to show off skin (like in Ayu's case with the "Beauty Clinic CM") in a non-sexual way. And even if you wanna show off a bit of skin sexually, it shouldn't be with some lyrics of "uhhh...yeah...baby...do me... ", etc... To me, that's trash no matter who sings it, and the day Ayu resorts to that will be the day I stop listening to her stuff. When I listen to music, I don't need to hear those noises... I wanna hear someone who's pouring their heart and soul into their songs... someone whom you can perhaps relate to... someone whom you know is genuinely singing about something, rather than resorting to "doing it with a (insert inaminate object here)"...

This is the reason why I only watch TV these days for the news, and that's mostly it. This is why I haven't had to turn on the radio in weeks. If I wanted to see half-naked girls, I'd go buy Playboy... y'see, that was made with the sole purpose of selling porn. Music shouldn't be. Music is about getting a message across in hopes that your audience will accept that as their own. I truly doubt many girls can relate to "I did it with 5 guys/girls last night", or whatever is played on the radio these days.

Without a choreographer, Britney would be (simply put) crap. Send over the best choreographers to Ayu and have her learn some moves for a bit, and you'll see the difference. Or... have Britney do a music video without her "signature moves" which have been taught to NSYNC, the Backstreet Boys, etc... and she'll be as "bad" as Ayu... and unlike Britney, Ayu doesn't need to "flaunt" herself, nor does she need to dance at all to get her point across.

So in conclusion, Britney would be nowhere without her sex appeal and "original moves".

i know i dont have the resource to point it out, but i remember watching some entertainment channel *something like E?* neways and there were a grp of writers that talked about how they wrote many songs for ppl (and or grps) like brittney, christina, and avril luvinge *how ever u spell her last name*

Britney Spears is fake. I will repeat: she is fake. She portrays herself, in her songs and her music videos, as a sex obsessed, superficial person. Every single she's ever produced has been about some cliched romantic or sexual subject. Consequently, her videos follow the same tired formula to grab attention. In "Baby One More Time" she portrayed a not-so-innocent catholic schoolgirl bursting at the seams with sexual frustration (SUCH a stereotype). All she can do to appease her urges is demonstrate a Lolita complex by oxymoronically wearing little girl pigtails with too much lipstick and by shaking her chest. "oops I did it again" had her laying on a flower with her legs splayed as the camera obsessively zoomed in on her sweaty, parted lips. Oh, and her red bodysuit was as ugly as all hell btw. "Stronger" had that inafamous chair dancing bit where she might as well have been in a strip club....the camera did an awful shot of her pelvis thrusting at the chair. "Don't Let me be The Last To Know" or whatever it was called was basically her having a sexual romp with a guy on an island, nuff said. "Not A Girl, Not Yet a Woman" was more Lolita complex madness, and that video had her wearing pants that went so low you could see her pelvic bones, I could not believe how low her pants were. "I'm a Slave 4 U" requires no explanation....it had everything, even simulated sex as she convulsed, panting for air, in a group of men. Hey, at least Norah Jones doesn't pant in her songs. "Boys" had her force herself on Austin Powers while she whispered "get nasty" in the background. I mean come on, do I need to go further? Who cares if she wrote her third album, what kind of lyrical integrity does she have? And if I hear her rhyme "baby" with "crazy" one more time, I am going to scream.

Getting back to the fake part.....all these cheap sexual tricks to gain attention would be less of an issue if she didn't pretend she was a different person. She says who she portrays in her videos is not really her. She just wears costumes and plays parts. She says she's not a tramp and has a great character. In all these interviews, she tries to show the REAL BRitney Spears. Well sorry Brit, but the world sees you the way you publicly portray yourself in your videos and music. I don't care if she is a nun who fasts every day and saves puppies from streets. That's not who she chooses to show herself as. She wants her image to be sexual to the point of skanky. She says she has so much control over her career, so obviously she LIKES the way she is portrayed and continues with this debauched image.

You know what? Maybe Avril Lavigne is a "phony" and Norah Jones "can't sing" but at least they have the courage and self-confidence to portray themselves as who they really are and not hide behind some publicity inhaling image. At least they don't shed their clothing to get a rise from people, then say "that's not the real me, stop judging me!". At least they are real. Britney is as fake as those ubiquitous breasts of her. She's got a great body, no doubt, and she sure does sell records. But she is no artist. I mean, even Christina Aguillera, who is usually considered just as "dirty" as Britney, at least made ONE video where she honestly sang about beauty and its many different incarnations, whether it be homosexual, skinny, chubby, old, young, whatever, and kept her clothes on so you could take her seriously.

All right that's enough of these shananigans.

I don't know them very well...but all I think is that music being an art shouldn't mix with sex. Why should it be? It's so stupid. According to this trend then all movies will be rated 18+ because sex sells and they need nudity/sex scenes to become blockbuster movies...or all actresses must bare all to promote their movies.

To put it harshly, music with sex is like a porn movie, both are art, but with sex they are no longer art.

Jerms, you're a very passionate man, ne? I wouldn't sleep outside of a record store to be the first one to buy Brit's new album, but I also wouldn't trip her into traffic if our paths ever crossed. I don't, however, think of Britney as an artist or singer. She's a performer and entertainer. And damn it, she sure does know how to entertain! But come on, any hearing individual would probably rather go deaf than hear Brit "unfiltered". She does not have a strong voice. I don't think she even focuses on her music that much. She's more of a dancer than a singer. Why? Because she does that a hell of a lot better than she sings. Her lyrics are by no stretch of the imagination "deep". And if someone thinks they are, they're either simple-minded, shallow as hell, or high. Britney is the poster child for what is wrong with the music industry. You can't compare her to Norah Jones at all. Norah may not win any beauty pageants, but her album won the most Grammys last year. If Britney acquired "shankles" (when you're so overweight that your shin and ankle become one), suddenly lost all decent body coordination and still sounded the way she did today, we wouldn't know who she was.

Some of you say "don't even compare Ayu to Britney!" Why not? Sure, Ayu may not be hurling panties into the audience, but she isn't High Priestess Ayu. She's done some risque stuff too. She just doesn't go as overboard as Britney because she knows that could hurt her sales. Trust me, if tomorrow Japanese consumers forgot what morlas are, Ayu would probably be one of the first to take advantage. She's an astute businesswoman. We should know that by now.

Christina has a voice. Her being sexual isn't something that she puts on for videos. She has said that's who she is. She has written some songs that are deeper than the standard pop crap. I'm not a fan of her, but I can at least respect her as an artist for all of that. Britney on the other hand has said "that's not me in the video, that's not who I am", which is just using sex to sell herself.

Thanks, but I'm actually not critical of celebrities, don't presume to know that about me. I don't spend my life picking apart celebrities, they're people. This seems to have turned into a thread about the flaws of Britney, but regardless, it shouldn't be a debate between jerms and Ash.... do remember that nearly everyone who's replied to this thread notices something wrong with Britney, not just Ashley.

With Britney, you know that she isn't "real". She may be "cute", but that's about it that makes her stand out from most artists. Go find a random girl with nice looks and give her a mic, and watch as she's "transformed" into a pop icon overnight, regardless of her vocal talent. In our modern society, anyone with a few sound altering devices can turn a person into the next pop diva in a matter of seconds. Now... I'm not saying Britney has no talent (as pointed out by Ash's reply...lol), but surely, how well do you think she'd be without her implants, "perfect" body, and a sound studio? Not very far...

Sure, Britney may have some talent somewhere, but i have yet to see it. The truth is, i'm not a fan of western pop music at all so it's obvious that i won't be liking Britney but i can't even remember the last time i heard a song (can they really be called songs?) by her that actually sounded even half decent.

Why, aswell, does she have to wear the minimum amount of clothes possible eh? I'll admit, Britney isn't (or at least wasn't) bad looking, but now she's descended to the level of Christina Aguilera who at least has some talent inside her.

I've noticed though how all of this is being directed towards Britney, but i feel i should point out that it's a trend that runs in a lot of western pop. I'm constantly seeing pop singers wearing less and less clothes to try and gain more popularity, and sadly it seems to work.

Comparing Britney to Ayu though, that's just dumb. On one hand we have good songs, pure talent, extremely good looking and no need to strip down to nothing more than just a bra and a belt. Whereas on the other hand we have Britney who doesn't have any of these qualitys (ok she's pretty, i'll give her that. Big deal).

Yeah, whether we like it or not, image does play a part in music. Granted, it doesn't factor in largely when it comes to certain genres, but in the pop world, its role can be quite huge.

Britney has the best marketing team in the world, and i dont know how you can like pop music and not think britney's song were a little bit catchy.

And in case no one noticed, this is Rolling Stone magazine, it's supposed to cause shock, dismay, and controversy amongst people. It's actually kinda sad that Brit gets all the flack for sexy stuff, I mean, every other pop star has posed provacatively, too (Christina, Jessica Simpson, etc). Then again, this is just my two cents and I happen to love it when ppl are fearless and don't care what others think.
