asmAyumi1992 24th September 2009 10:13 PM

Wow. Really the same. Who copy who?

JackieRos 24th September 2009 10:20 PM

oooh ayu copy britney jeeeeeeeeeeeeesus
riiight

happiholic★ 24th September 2009 10:24 PM

@asmAyumi1992: If it was a copy, it would be Ayu who is the copycat. Brit's Toxic came out in 2003, Ayu's Startin' came out in 2006.

Anywho, Brit is my favorite North America artist, Ayu is my favorite Asian artist, so I love both and don't care that they are similar. Although, I wouldn't be surprised if Ayu "borrowed" a few ideas for fun.

JackieRos 24th September 2009 10:25 PM

^yah i know but i dont think she copied

what people need to understand is that ayu doesnt direct the pvs
why they never blame the director:rolleyes

happiholic★ 24th September 2009 10:28 PM

^I said "if". And I don't think she "copied it". I think she wanted a video to represent the North American music industry, and who is the princess of pop over here? Ms. Spears.

JackieRos 24th September 2009 10:31 PM

probably yeah

i was saying it in general any artist who "copied" another gets blamed
why blame the artist when the person who really copied is the director

Aisha_Angel 24th September 2009 10:43 PM

You know what, after watching Startin' over 100 times...I honestly didn't see the simularities between it and Toxic. Wow...just...wow. It may have been obvious to everyone else, but I just NEVER associated the two with one another. Wow...

Though I have to say that I STILL prefer Startin' to Toxic, because Toxic's video was too sexually charged. Sure it fit with the song, but it was still too much.

That's a good point. It is a very, very westernized video (Ayu's).

Definitely similarities, but watching one right after the other, to me the videos have completely different feelings.

Yet Ayu is praised with credit when her PVs are amazing. ;)
A little plagiarism isn't anything new in the music industry. :P

It's pretty obvious Jackie ( :P ). Toxic was a huge hit and Ayu was bound to have seen the music video at some time or another, so I'm sure all the blame can't be thrown upon the director.

Not the entire video, but just the motorcycle and explosion part.

EXACTLY!!

Picaflor 7/4 24th September 2009 11:27 PM

I don't gaf if she copied off brit or not. I love them both. Toxic and startin' (ayu and brit too ♥). I couldn't give a crap if they wanted to cover eachother's songs either. (called a cover, but I bet the ayu and/or brit haters would just say that that song was "stolen" from the person its covered). blah blah blah. Like with kumi's shake it, and some trf song or something? they go on and on and on AND on about how kumi stole the song. when chances are she probably just sampled the song or even covered it.

Again. I love both music videos, both songs, AND both artists. so whatever. I think it's even cool that if ayu was to copy a brit pv, she'd use a cool one.

Kazeyomi 24th September 2009 11:33 PM

The motorcycle part is the most evident copy of Toxic's video imo.
I don't care at all.. srsly. She has great PVs, if she copied sometimes.. oh well I didn't care.
Lol @ the comments btw

Andrenekoi 24th September 2009 11:48 PM

Still think that Startin' is a sarcastic video...

About blaming the director... to bad ayu herself said a lot of times that she chooses the way her stuff is going to be done (and this counts for At02 and Dearest too...)

What's the significance of AT02 and Dearest?

JackieRos 25th September 2009 12:02 AM

thats why i said ayu first but then i said artist just to be in general :shrug

Andrenekoi 25th September 2009 12:04 AM

at02 = drowned world tour
dearest = Drowned World/Substitute for Love

Ayu really enjoyed Madonna's Ray of Light and Music eras xD

zyoeru 25th September 2009 12:17 AM

Ohhh yeah, but tbh the outfits looked way nicer on Ayu.

pommy48 25th September 2009 12:19 AM

Lol I always think Startin is just a parody making fun of the American music videos...I mean with all the touching herself parts XD

Yeah and 10 dancers making out with Ayu's tummy ( :P ). It's probably true that its a parody.

Picaflor 7/4 25th September 2009 12:41 AM

Now that i think about it...her vogue single cover looks alot like brit's if you seek amy cover, and brit's "everytime" cover looks like it could have been a screen cap of ayu's "forgiveness" pv.
:O

lol just throwing stuff out there, stuff i realized forever ago. I'm glad ayu did startin. looks really cool. and with all the depressing videos she had during that album, it was something to shake it up. (jewel = serious, momentum = crying, 1 love = prostitute, not a very happy ayu either, then there's startin, with its happiness! and playfulness!) I mean that album ahd some of the most depressing/serious videos. and then there's starting. XD

ren0210989 25th September 2009 01:09 AM

all i got from there is that Ayu ate Brit up PERIOD ;)

NintendoHTF1242 25th September 2009 01:36 AM

Ayu stans commenting on that video made my day <3 I was amazed at those amazing comments.

dreamland2.0 25th September 2009 01:39 AM

It;s funny, it kind of looks like Britney/the director took some influence from Japan/anime etc. It's kind of like Madonna and her asian influences in that tour?
I mean, Ayu is Japanese! It looks more natural with her?
Anyways I like Startin' better, but Toxic definitely has better graphics XD

AyUmIXx 25th September 2009 01:59 AM

didn't Ayu copy kill bill? hehe :D

TITANIC 25th September 2009 02:09 AM

yepss it's totally similar. I cant say Ayu is not copying brit....

waterballoon 25th September 2009 06:02 AM

The truth is Ayu fell in love with the Kill Bill outfit and decided to wear it, and she saw Toxic's MV too and loved the motorbike part! So she used it.

Then Kuu decided that she loves motorbikes too and uses it in her TRICK tour.

In the next 100 years, about 65 female solo pop singers from all over the world will use motorbikes.

AyumiBest 25th September 2009 06:17 AM

I love the comments. XD

Sandre 25th September 2009 07:41 AM

Oh looks like the same.
Both of them are really cool there.

Not~Yet 25th September 2009 01:00 PM

W00t I always thought it was a common knowledge that Startin' is a little parody of Western pop culture. It parodies Kill Bill, Britney Spears and that some Missy Elliot video of which name I can't get to my head right now. (Work It, I think?)

Lanz16 25th September 2009 01:29 PM

The comments are hideous and funny at the same time especially the indian fight!

Surprisingly, its almost the same as Ayu's Startin'. :)

~StarCatcher~ 25th September 2009 01:34 PM

That's the first thing I thought of when I first saw Startin'.
Isn't that the scene of Britney's Toxic XD

But now I understand that it should have been a parody of Toxic, Work it and Kill Bill.
funny :D

noidea 25th September 2009 02:28 PM

I always saw Startin' pretty much as parody of music industry, especially the amercian industry, so that fits in just right.

Ayu started the motorbikes in concerts trend seperatly(DT01) xDDD
then Namie used it(Play Tour 2007) and then Kuu xDDD
But im pretty sure the first part of your post is true^^

~ayu-cake~ 25th September 2009 02:44 PM

The whole bike scene was annoyingly similar, but a side from that nothing else. :S

C+R+E+AYUMI 25th September 2009 03:34 PM

OH MY MY...it's the same!!

chloeM 25th September 2009 04:06 PM

oh well~~

Andrenekoi 25th September 2009 04:20 PM

IMO Startin' is not a parody of the western music industry, but of a joke about people saying she is to western... like.. "look how western I am! weeee!"xD

I thought the same thing! Every time I saw that one part of her in the black dress and hat I thought of Missy Elliot for some reason but I can't remember why; it must be similar to one of her music videos.

freedreamer 25th September 2009 05:28 PM

Delirium-Zer0 25th September 2009 10:57 PM

Yeah, I never had a doubt that that video was a parody. I mean come ON, it's so entirely ridiculous!

I do think it's ayu's way of saying "Yeah, sure, I like western stuff, but I'm not NEARLY as bad as I could be about it! Teehee!" to the people who criticize her for being too westernized & taking inspiration from artists like Madonna.

It's obvious that Startin' "copied" Toxic. I noticed it the first time I saw the video, however I always assumed the copying was intentional because Startin' definitely seems like a parody video.

Well, I do agree that it's a "copy" (the same way At02 is a low budget DWT and Dearest video is a low budget glittered Drowned World/Substitute for Love video, both from Madonna) :P

Polyrhythm 26th September 2009 01:13 AM

I dont even like Britney Spears....but her's seemed more well-made than Ayu's...I wouldn't have seen it like this before...but now seeing the comparison...Ayu's is more like a cheep copy

Rainbow141 26th September 2009 01:46 AM

One way or another, parody or not, if Ayu did take some of these ideas, she should at least have given credit.

But I'm glad people aren't being biased this time about Ayu... Sometimes Ayu fans can get pretty crazy, I wouldn't be surprised if some of the really really really crazy fans were saying that it was Ayu's first. :laugh

Same thing for the uber-popular, crazed-fan magnet Brit, but in this case, fans are right to say she did these concepts first.

pommy48 26th September 2009 01:50 AM

^ lol how? say "parody ideas came from Britney Spear's Toxic"? I never seen credits for parodies...because most people would just know what the person is making fun of~

Rainbow141 26th September 2009 01:54 AM

^ You have a point. But seeing as she's a J-Pop artist, and Britney's American... I dunno. I just feel like a little credit could have been given. :shrug

But yeah, I see what your saying. Bad example, I know, but: when Miley Cyrus [ugh hate her] made a parody of Madonna's 4 Minutes, called 7 Things, it was plainly obvious. Of course. And I think somewhere she actually stated it was supposed to be a parody. But like, if Ayu was REALLY spoofing with Startin', then it would've been cool to mention that.

I dunno. I'm not trying to make anybody mad here, I hope I'm not. D:

Andrenekoi 26th September 2009 03:07 AM

^7 things is not a parody of 4 minutes o.O

:yes

emi♡ 26th September 2009 03:32 AM

I thought it was common knowledge it was a parody.

@Rainbow: Pommy's right, she doesn't really need to give any credit. People in Japan know who Britney is and know the video's...besides, she can't just come out and say she's making fun of something either because it would make her look bad.

So it's kept ambiguous, but obviously, obvious lol

Aditmi Krisnasaki ~II~ 26th September 2009 03:56 AM

may ayu is just inspired by her... Britney is also a lot inspired by Madonna right??

Crystal_Ageha 26th September 2009 04:01 AM

Um, yeah, it's kinda similar, but I knew from the first time I saw it that Startin' was a parody. I don't think parodies can count as a rip-off, right? And I mean, I've actually seen that bike thing a few times (if I remember correctly, they were all Western works, though).

MissElin_ 26th September 2009 07:18 AM

Hehe lol. Startin' is too silly to not be a parody. XD I love Startin' PV, It's soooo funny. Makes this silly smile on my lips every time. Its pretty obvious on how Ayu looks in the video too. Her movement and face is great, she's really pulling the parody of.

Picaflor 7/4 26th September 2009 08:59 AM

hm...

so...

It's ayu wearing a kill bill outfit...riding a motorcycle like britney spears, and dancing to the background of missy elliot's "work it" video...?

actually I don't remember the brit thing coming to mind when I first saw the video, but the missy elliot similarities, definitely. I was like "omg missy elliot!" only thing missing is a playground in the background. haha

absolutely agree with you

For what purpose are you ashamed of yourself?
What is waiting for you after that?
Though I really like your way of walking
In which you head straight and hit against a wall so often

You can start your plan whenever you like
And you can end it
When it's ready
It's up to you

* There is no answer
No one tells it to you
If it exists somewhere
You already have it
If you have decided to stick to your way
Throw out your chest
And raise your head

There is no point in comparing yourself with someone else
Because everyone has one's own measure

You are the only one in this world
No one can replace you

If you still hesitate
It's really up to you

** There is no answer
No matter where you search for it
But you will never have
This moment again in your life
If you have decided to believe in yourself
Accept the answer
Even if it's different from your ideal

* (repeat)
** (repeat)

lalalalalalalala lalalalalalala
lalalalalalalala lalalalalalala
:innocent

ComatoseBunnySnatcher 28th September 2009 08:20 AM

Both videos suck, so I could care less :)

But I think some other artists really did rip Britney off...
I think it was Namie or someone in a rock video, because I remember the diamond outfit thingy.

ayu_ayu301 28th September 2009 01:24 PM

i love both Ayu and Britney .. but i'm not too sure if this Startin' PV is really a parody .. it seem people say that to make it sound right as the similarity is pretty much there.

either way .. both songs are catchy and i love them both

Yeli13 28th September 2009 08:45 PM

Lol kinda obvious no?? But what the matter, the two look so good and entertaining that even if Ayu is the copycat, well, I don't care!^^
