It's also for chaku uta (ringones) and chaku uta fulls (full songs) also full singles/albums but they barely sell as a whole digitally.

yeah a song can be certified on 4 fronts when it comes to RIAJ.

What do you mean by four fronts? I've never really understood certification. Haha.

her last single to get Platinum certification was Mirrorcle World . From Mirrorcle World onwards , her singles have been getting Gold status which's better than nothing

Well last year except for the enka singer's ai no mamade there was no female artist that got more than a gold certification with a single. =P

according to the RIAA, Ayu's You were.../Ballad (only according to this thread) would NOT have even made GOLD status.

Recording Industry Asscosiation of America:

Currently, the RIAA certification criteria for albums - physical are:
500,000 units: Gold album.
1,000,000 units: Platinum album
2,000,000 or more units: Multi-Platinum album
10,000,000 units: Diamond album

Singles - physical:
Gold when it ships 500,000 copies
Platinum when it ships 1,000,000 copies
Double platinum when it ships 2,000,000 copies

Note: Before January 1, 1989, gold was achieved at 1,000,000 copies, and platinum at 2,000,000

Digital Sales - Downloaded:
Gold means 500,000 tracks downloaded
Platinum means 1,000,000 tracks downloaded
Double platinum means 2,000,000 tracks downloaded

Spanish (over 50% of the content must be in spanish):
50,000 units: Oro album.
100,000 units: Platino album.
200,000 units: Multi-Platino album.

Gold: 100,000

Unlike many countries, the highest certification is not called "Diamond" or "Platinum", but "Million".

Oh my gosh.. I just realized how much easier it is in japan to get certified than in America...

Yeah, of course... sales aren't super high nowadays, so I don't think it's ever expected that albums or singles will sell as much as they would in the US anyway. Why even bring up RIAA? Ayu's releases aren't even anywhere near America... ever!

I was curious on how ayu's single would have done according to the RIAA... and obviously Ayu's albums and singles aren't released in America -- that is something I would hope everyone knows.. that is why we order from sites Like YesAsia and CDJapan.

Well, many (like really, a LOT.) Japanese releases would NOT be certified if they were graded like the RIAA.

There are also other certifications in other countries where it's rather easy to get Gold and so on, so it's not like Japan is alone.

I know like in Canada for instance You Were/BALLAD would have gone platinum..

Canada Record Asscosiation Cerification:
Gold: 40,000 units (previously 50,000)
Platinum: 80,000 units (previously 100,000)
Diamond: 800,000 units (previously 1,000,000) [5]
Note: Multi-Platinum certification refers to albums that have sold 160,000 units or more (i.e. 160,000 is double Platinum) but have not yet sold 800,000 units (Diamond certification).
