FAN MEETING

Girl group Wonder Girls members SunYe, YooBin, YeEun and SoHee talk about their feelings on SunMi’s leaving the group.

The 4 WonderGirls members had a meeting with their WonderGirls fan union on 8th February and the fan union released the details of the meeting through their fancafe at about 11pm.

According to the representative of the fan union, SunMi’s training was shorter as compared to the other members since her debut she had missed out a much of her schooling life. And the members constantly felt SunMi’s regrets about it after they had their American debut.

They told the fans, “But our responses were the same as fans when it was revealed that SunMi will be stopping her promotions as WonderGirls for the time being. At first we panicked, and said that she will regret this, but after awhile we calmed down and gave our support for her decision.”

They said, “And we know that SunMi is not one to make such decisions lightly, she has been thinking about this for a while, and discussed it with the members and company."

And the WonderGirls member also explained that rumours of the company pushing SunMi to leave the group is groundless. They said, “Debuting in the States was a dream which all the members have dreamed of. Even though we were afraid with all the saying that it is too early for our American debut, we really wanted to go to the States.”

They added, “The company also do not wish for its singers to be like puppet singers who just listen to whatever the company tells them to do.”

The members also talked about their feelings on SunMi temporarily stopping promotions as part of the WonderGirls. Especially for SoHee, who is of the same age as SunMi and stopped her high school education for her singer career together with SunMi. SoHee said, “It is true that it is hard to be away from the family as a young student, so I understand how SunMi feels. With that said, I believed that she has thought things out since it is her choice after all.”

The WonderGirls also emphasized, “Even though ‘WonderGirls SunMi’ is important, individual ‘SunMi’ is also very important. Since this is her decision on her own life, if us members are to hold on to her, later on when she regrets, we don’t know how we are going to be responsible for that.”

Also, “There are people who are criticising like ‘This is the decision you made in the beginning, why are you calling it ends now?’. We hope people don’t look at it this way since hardship means differently to every individual and they deal with them differently.” (Really well said. So, so true.)

The 4 members of the WonderGirls had the meeting with 5 fan union representative from about 2pm in the afternoon that day.

Meanwhile, on 23rd January it was announced that SunMi will leave WonderGirls for the time being. With that, SunMi will be with the WonderGirls till the end of the month. And from March, she will return to Korea to start preparations for her college life.

And JYP trainee HyeRim (Lim) will be taking over the empty position in the group. Already on 4th February, she had her first official performance as part of the WonderGirls in China for an event.

They tried to expand way to qucikly. I would have rather them stayed in korea making good music than trying to become famous wold wide on just one song- and getting no new music.

I agree with that. They tried to do too many things at the same time.
I thought that releasing in the US was a nice idea and they succeded.
However, when they started annoucing that the girls where learning chinese and that they were planning a debut in china at the same time...
That, I found it a bit too much. I think they should have concentrated their efforts on Korea and the US rather than trying to make it everywhere.
I think they should have wait (for the debut in china).
If you look at the comments on omona, people are tired of hearing Nobody in different versions...can't blame them :shrug

Well, I don't know too much about them because I haven't listened to their Korean material yet...I got into them because of nobody! xD I wonder when the album is set to come out now...

Meanwhile, member SunMi will be leaving the team and heading back to Korea to prepare for her college life in March, while JYP trainee HyeRim will be joining as new member.

Hey guys! :) i found something interesting about wonder girls today!

i am subscribed to Demi Lovato on Youtube and she posted a new video today and i was watching it and different celebrities were making random cameos and all of a sudden i hear "wonder girls!" and i was like :eyebrow huh? lol and i have never actually listened to them myself but knew they were a popular korean group and i didnt know if many wonder girl fans would be subscribed to Demi Lovato XD haha so i thought i would share my random find with you guys ^_^

Also, in the e-mail it says the album will be released in Fall 2010. Wasn't it going to be released in July? It seems like another delay has been made. Either that or maybe it's just an error.

I've been pissed off with every delay since I pre-ordered so I am very happy. I must have tried to cancel several times so I'm happy it didn't go thru. I'm so hyped for new material!!! FINALLY!! Hell has frozen over!!!

because they're done with those songs. they already lost a ton of fans who just lost interest because they were stuck singing nobody for almost 2 years, releasing an even older song would just be stupid. jype has crappy management but i'd hope they're not that stupid. so hot and nobody were just tacked on to this to stuff up the tracklist.

this whole single was probably just rushed and released now to appease their fans who would be pissed off when they heard the actual album was pushed back again

no more videos :) jype didn't intend for their release, they've all been pulled off of youtube (except for 1 or 2 which will probably be gone soon anyway) and all the korean news articles about them disappeared as well

Daniel Gauss, who was the group’s New York-based English tutor from October 2009 to May 2010 said over e-mail that the girls had been mismanaged by local music mogul Park Jin-young’s entertainment company.

Gauss’ claim as the group’s private tutor was confirmed over the phone by two current Manhattan-based JYPE employees.

In the e-mails, Gauss alleges that all members of the group had not been given health insurance coverage. “I was shocked when one of the girls told me that the girls are not covered by health insurance in America,” he wrote. “I once saw one girl in extreme pain -- due to a pre-existing problem stemming from a previous operation -- who received no professional medical treatment for the pain and I saw others with minor ailments go untreated.”

Gauss further wrote that after the group acquired the sponsorship deal with Sony Ericsson, JYPE had Sun-ye perform in Sanya, China, for Sony Ericsson executives, shortly after her father was rushed to the hospital in a coma.

He wrote that Sun-ye had told him “her father had stopped breathing and had to be rushed to the hospital. In the ambulance, (Sun-ye) and her family had to decide whether the father should be given treatment to be kept alive since he had lapsed into a coma. The family chose to keep him alive and I was told by the girl that he was never going to come out of the coma.”

"Very shortly after that trauma, she was performing for Sony Ericcson executives in Sanya," Gaus wrote "I did not have the heart to ask her whether it was her idea or JYPE’s idea for her to perform."

He also claimed JYPE illegally housed the members within the company’s Manhattan office -- for which he said the city of New York slapped the company with a $2,500 fine.

An online link to the New York City Department of Buildings was provided by Gauss which confirms the company had not only been issued a class-2 citation on May 28, 2009 and fined for altering and changing an occupied building for residential use without a valid permit, but also defaulted on the violation.

The company was scheduled to appear in court for a hearing last month, but failed to do so, which has resulted in the case being given a default status.

Gauss also said that JYPE had sold the band’s CD at a bargain basement price of $1 at retail clothing chains around the United States, which significantly boosted both its sales and its performance in the Billboard Hot 100 charts.

On Oct. 23, 2009 the group’s single "Nobody" entered the top 100 at No. 76 that was widely publicized by the local media.

This allegation was confirmed by Wonder Girl’s former manager and current JYPE marketing department employee David Hyun. "That was part of our distribution deal and that is definitely one of the reasons why they cracked the top 100."

When pressed about other allegations made by Gauss, Hyun refused to comment any further.

”I rather not comment on anything that came from (Gauss) other than confirm he did used to tutor for the Wonder Girls,“ he said.

Jane Kim, the group’s current manager, refused to state why Gauss had quit his job as a private tutor.

Gauss claims he quit his position because he had become disenchanted with JYPE’s management of the band.

He had been contacted by reps from the company after he had posted a Craigslist classified ad of himself as an English tutor in New York, but according to him, once he began his job as tutor, he had become increasingly concerned about the way the group was being managed by the company.

"I cannot profit in any manner by revealing this information," he wrote.

"I believe my motives are genuine. I did not ask for any compensation for any of this information and I do not want any. The girls are constantly going between Korea and America while doing activities. No matter how busy they were, if they weren’t receiving professional medical attention and were being treated unjustly, no matter what you would have been notified by someone.”

On the claim that Sunye had to perform hours after her father was rushed to the hospital in a coma, “To say she performed because she wanted to benefit the company is wrong.”

The representative also stated that the company plans to pursue legal action against the person who raised these allegations.

The head of JYP Entertainment Jung Wook on Wednesday confirmed allegations by its former employee that their client the Wonder Girls had not been covered by health insurance since January and their $2,500 citation from the NYC Department of Buildings was, in fact, in default status.

He also revealed the group had been on student visas when they first arrived in the U.S. last April. He said the group had been registered at an undisclosed language institute as students but applied and received O-1 visas upon learning of the possible legal repercussions.

United States law states that F-1 visa holders are allowed to work part-time -- under 20 hours a week -- while still enrolled in an academic institution.

An O-1 visa is a type of employment visa under U.S. immigration law that applies to people who are deemed to carry extraordinary ability in the sciences, arts, education, business, or athletics.

"We knew it was illegal before we switched the girls to an O-1 visa," Jung said in a telephone interview with The Korea Herald.

"However, the girls didn’t start getting to work as soon as they entered the United States, so we didn’t anticipate there would be problems regarding that matter," he said. "So at first, our girls entered with a student visa while they were registered at the language institute."
Although Jung did not state the exact day and month the group had been given the visas, he said the switch came "immediately."

Jung was asked about the name and location of the institute for confirmation purposes but maintained he did not know specific information on the whereabouts of the academy the group were allegedly attending in order to retain legal sojourn in the United States.

"But that’s a minor issue -- an issue our stateside branch handles that I have no knowledge of," Jung said.

On the matter of the group’s health insurance, Jung said they had been covered until January, when the group was still registered with the language institute.

"You do realize over 50 million Americans don’t carry health insurance and most Korean nationals there don’t as well, right?" he said. "With that said, up until January they did have health insurance.

"That was possible because they were legally allowed to apply for health insurance as students but because the girls had been flying back and forth from Korea to the U.S., they stopped attending classes which took them out of coverage once they left the school."So if the group had maintained legal status as O-1 holders, why would they be required to attend the language institute until January?

"They needed to continue their linguistic studies," Jung said.

"Dan was hired to further teach them along with another tutor named Claire."

He was referring to Daniel Gauss, the band's former English tutor who spoke about JYPE's alleged mistreatment of the girls to The Korea Herald on Tuesday.

Jung said JYPE was under no obligation to provide the members of the group with health insurance because the company "did not maintain an employer and employee relationship." (......the ****?)

He refuted claims of medical neglect saying "there was never a time when they weren’t given medical attention if they needed it. (ok now idgi.)

"If you’re a top class star like the Wonder Girls, your health is our first priority."

Jung was also asked about the $2,500 fine the company’s Manhattan office was slapped with.

"The title holder of the property prior to its acquisition by JYPE had remodeled the entire structure to be suitable for office use," he said.

According to the citation administered by the New York City Department of Buildings, it has placed the unresolved case into default status after representatives of JYPE failed to make a court appearance on April 29, 2010.

"We didn’t show up to our court hearing because the contractors who had originally commissioned the construction of it had said they would appear on behalf of us after we filed a complaint to them," Jung said.

The JYPE president bluntly responded to allegations from the group’s tutor, Daniel Gauss.

"I don’t understand why the entire country has to hear about what this guy has to say. He is just a disgruntled ex-employee who quit because he thought we weren’t treating him well."
Gauss refuted local reports that said that he had been sacked after he demanded a pay raise.

"I was never fired, I quit because they treated me like garbage," Gauss told The Korea Herald.

"I was being paid $20 an hour to teach the group." (Ok, I got paid this much when I was a tutor in high school, so I guess it's fair for him to want more.)

Gauss said he saved most of the e-mail correspondence between himself and JYPE to prove his claims.

"The day before I was supposed to go back to JYPE on May 3, I had a conversation with one of my other private students who told me JYPE probably wasn’t paying me enough money," he said.

"At that point I just decided to quit because I didn’t want to go back and negotiate. At that point, I was already set on leaving the job. But I was hesitant because the girls were so nice and I was convinced the girls were not being treated well."
After Gauss quit his position as the band’s tutor, he decided to look into a "hunch" he had in regards to the "strange" look of the Manhattan JYPE office.

"I thought the building looked strange because they had an office in the basement and they had people living on the second and third floors," he said.
"Of course I was surprised when I found out that they had been busted by the city. So I made inquiries and I spoke to somebody from the NYC Department of Buildings and that person confirmed JYPE’s violation.

Gauss’ allegations against JYPE included charges of illegal housing, lack of health insurance coverage, and the coercion of one of its members to perform a private concert for corporate executives in China. (that last line sounds wrong. Sunye already refuted this in her blog entry yesterday, and 'private concert'? It was a highly-publicized Sony Ericsson endorsement concert that even fans attended....)

As implied from Yenny’s recent tweet, it seems like things are going swell at the JYP headquarters. So did Daniel Gauss really have the girls’ best interest at heart like he claimed to be, or was he harboring an ulterior motive, like gaining 15 seconds of fame?

JYPE is now seeking to pursue legal action against him for raising such allegations.

Although it is unfortunate that the issue had to arise four days before the Wonder Girls’ long-awaited comeback, you can’t keep a good thing down.

Yesterday, a former English tutor of the Wonder Girls went public with allegations regarding JYP Entertainment’s mistreatment of the pop quintet, alighting interest among Wonderfuls and kpop fans around the world.

After the JYPE CEO Jung Wook and WG member Yeeun responded to Gauss’s allegations yesterday, leader Sunye followed suit and posted an entry on her blog today in response to the issue.

Hi, this is Sunye of Wonder Girls.
I’m writing because I came across a heartbreaking news while preparing for our comeback.
First… I would like to say that what the English tutor have mentioned is not true.
Especially the story about my father. It is a bit upsetting that personal issues of my family was brought up publicly.
My father was suffering from a long-term illness and few months ago, he was rushed to the hospital when it suddenly worsened.
Upon hearing the news, I immediately flew from New York to Korea to visit my father,
and it so happened that other members were to return to Korea after a week in order to attend an event set up in Korea.
I watched after my father for a week and thankfully he got better, so after consulting his doctor I was able to attend the scheduled event.
He had the illness for almost 20 years, and it wasn’t something that could be dealt with immediately,
so after seeing that he got better, I could settle my mind and return to performing.
Regarding other things he was worried about…
When Sunmi was still not well after receiving a surgery in Korea and flying to New York, although she was against it,
because of our opinion and the company’s opinion she visited hospital frequently until she was fully cured.
We had no trouble with going to hospital over even little things like problems with our skin.
JYPE does not set limit on us entering and exiting the building,
and the JYPE building that we live in was a residence for students before we moved in.

Coming to the US was a matter that we decided upon carefully after receiving the company’s proposal,
and after an year here, the life at New York is fun and we’re thankful, we’ve been seeing and experiencing so many new things.

Even we are finding it hard to understand the points that the English tutor made,
and I decided to write this myself as it is just so heartbreaking for us, who are preparing for a comeback soon.
We have told all these to the company,
and they will take good care of this situation so don’t worry!
We promise that whatever happens, we will tell the truth.
