If you're not into drag queens (and I think most people aren't), it's hard to enjoy Timmy's stage persona.
Some people here imply that those who dislike him are homophobic, but I don't think it's the case.

Cahz- 4th November 2018 05:27 AM

I enjoy Timmy on stage, so I wish he keeps on doing his thing for a long time.
If anything what I always disliked about Ayu tours was Shuuya nonsense sorrow-dance.

truehappiness 4th November 2018 08:34 AM

Drag queens are awesome but the way that Timmy has been molded by Ayu isn't exactly that appealing... It's like a weird caricature of what drag should be and Ayu kind of just does the same kind of look for him each time with the crazy nipple pasties and mohawks/braids or whatever.

I think Japan is usually very confused about his presence because it doesn't really mesh at all with what is presented alongside him on stage. If anything, Ayu has somehow created a presence that draws attention away from her and to whatever Timmy has on when they do lives.

I hated Shuya's dances or whatever that was. Proves that if you wait long enough stuff goes away on it's own xD

I am generally OK with Timmy, even though I dislike 80% of the costumes he wears and on PoM this year he had fake abs drawn up, which was just so needless...

alternarist 4th November 2018 10:30 AM

Initially, I really do not understand why Timmy was dressed up like that. Then, I realised the answer was that ayu is the dictator, deciding what everyone wears on stage. Ok, I reluctantly accepted that.

I have grown to like Timmy because she blew kiss to me while waving to him in Osaka HAHA. Yes I describe Timmy as a she lol.

I guess ayu really drag queen-ish kinda characters. Gomi in Sexy little things (AT2010), Suba-sama in Shake It (AT2012), Timmy ~since 2012~.

I don't recall people complaining a bunch about Peco, or a single negative comment about Princess. Those two girls were doing a perfect job as back vocalists. I think the major issue we have with that Timmy's exposition is that it adds nothing valuable to her shows. He is used like a forced accessory that was maybe original at it's beginning (in nanana and brilliante) but is now mainly cringeworthy.
I do remember peco and princess getting lots of hate actually. Iirc people didn't like that they sang louder than ayu. Maybe also because they didn't like their voices, or that they didn't blend well with ayu's, but I don't remember that well, I just remember there was hate

I liked Peco, I didn't like her voice that much, but she looked like that cool mom of your friend who has a Harley Davidson and let you drink wine at the diner before you turn 18.

gosh I remember this! I remember Peco especially was getting so. much. shit. although if I remember correctly, there were some people in this demographic who were just picking on her physical appearance :(

what this taught me is that, people don't adjust to change easily. the addition of Peco and Princess to the stage brought a change in ayu's live band makeup so people reacted to that. the addition of Timmy represents, I think, a similar change although in a different fashion.

You remember it correctly, also all those reasons. I personally think that none of Ayu's backup singers fit her, her specific voice and inconsistent vocals always stand out from her supporting vocalists. Maybe she would sound better with her own voice in the background, I dunno.

About the recurring-yet-annoying Timmy's quarrel, all I have to say is:

I'm really curious about CDL. Don't know if they change the set list or it will be just a regular show on the tour performed on 31st?

Most likely just a regular show. She performed duing 12 31 with JTB and it was jusr a regular performance.

Party_King 4th November 2018 01:36 PM

Maybe she'll add evolution and Humming for CDL

But last year's show wasn't annouced as a countdown live. Maybe the announcement now implies some changes.

Maybe. The main reason why it wasn't announced as a CDL was that while it did take place on the 31st, it ended before midnight.

I think there will be some songs added in to fit the countdown atmosphere ex. evolution, seven days war

It is only when Peco and Princess joined that ayu’s voice started getting worse, which was especially obvious in certain TV lives where the two had more prominent roles (is this LOVE?). I always thought ayu’s own recording would sound way better as I bg vocal than all these people who simply do not complement her. I kind of blame Peco for influencing ayu’s singing technique as well in a way that simply does not work for her.

Peco and Princess (but ESPECIALLY Peco) were absolutely a negative influence on Ayu's vocals. (As was keiko from GLOBE around the I am... period, in my opinion, but that's another story...). They sounded like over-dramatic wailing banshees and Peco was a real stage-hog. Also Peco looked like someone who never made it huge as a soloist in the music industry and it was like Ayu gave Peco her time to shine when she hit her 50s... (actually I have no idea how old Peco is, but she looked pretty haggard). I'm reading that Peco was a soloist at one point.... but was she ever a big deal? o.o

AyuCanada 5th November 2018 01:09 AM

If only people knew what was going to replace Peco, they wouldn't have been complaining about her.

I was much younger back then and I maybe wasn't really active on forums back then, but I didn't personally hated Peco, I thought she was funny.

She was. I also believed she left the troupe so she could dedicate her self to her own career. Yeah

kotora 5th November 2018 12:52 PM

I would look at Timmy's talent. S/he wrote few really good songs for ayu and we like them.

jean-baptiste 5th November 2018 04:42 PM

I think it's strange to blame Peco for ayu's vocals. I would assume that like every other part of the production there would be a vocal coordinator who oversees the vocal aspects of the live show (unless that was Peco's role). I'm sure ayu was coached to sing the way she did cause maybe she was told it would mesh better with her background singers, but it's a bit weird to place so much blame on Peco unless she was in fact in charge of such things.

(If she was or if anyone has more insight into ayu's production methods feel free to correct me as I genuinely don't know.)

Oddly enough Peco was even in charge of choreography...Regardless of whether she actually gave ayu vocal coaching I am pretty sure that she was an influence.

I love how people around here can get the most creative fictinal narratives to justify hating people from Ayu's team. Poor dumb stupid non-personality Ayu... Aways being manipulated into doing stuff by old ladies and gay people.

People are influenced by people they spend time with, some more, some less. Nobody said that ayu was a sponge and that she is just doing what others tell her to do. We don't really know how close she was to Peco and to what extent she actually influenced ayu professionally.

Keep an open mind. I don't think absolutely everything in her life happens the way she wants it ;) Also you're kind of putting words in people's mouth which is totally uncalled for.

Ayu simply deciding to have a closer aproach to singing that fits rock music, an aesthetic she enjoyed before fame and embraced on her career over the years just isn't a possibility. There must be this bad influence around her.

I wouldn't say that you're putting words in my mouth, but I think you're taking my post in particular out of context. I think what you're trying to imply is that ayu has more creative control than we're giving her credit for, correct?

Although I do agree that ayu is the main creative force behind her work, when it comes to vocals ayu isn't trained or necessarily an expert in this area (not knocking her, more power to her for achieving what she did how she did) so it's fairly safe to assume she has assistance when overseeing vocal pedagogy.

Any professional singer that has any ounce of responsability will have assistance when overseeing vocal pedagogy. That doesn't mean they have no prior idea of how they want to sound while performing.

People are just making excuses to justify hating on performers they don't know anything about besides the fact they perform with Ayu.

I love that we have props! (even tho this classic car on stage thing was so overly done by every single female solo singer lol)

It's actually new to Ayu (she did use motor bikes before), so anything she hasn't used so far is more than welcome!

She looks great but I'm a little tired of the "school girl look" :laugh love the car tho!

Ha ha the school girl look is often associated with pleasure, especially in Japan as it's sort of a fetish...

xLuna&1LOVE 6th November 2018 03:34 PM

^ I am loving it. I think it is a bold statement she is making there. Or at least a punchline.

Evan Odinson 6th November 2018 09:32 PM

Yeah and I think she looks sexy, but it feels like she's been in school uniform since JTB chapter 1 :laugh

I Love Ayu, but i hate when she sign pre-recorded (playback) songs while wearing headset.

that is a very sexual opening. I expected bra scenes again but this is better!

God_ayu 7th November 2018 09:58 AM

The set list was the same for 6th November.

The car prop is for W. They kind of pretended that they are washing the car. For lady dynamite, ayu removed the white shirt and revealed a black corset-like outfit which was very sexy.

They picked 4 girls up the stage for Lelio and 2 guys for xoxo.

There’s another heart-shaped prop with arrow pierced through it during feel the love/merry go round. Before the encore officially starts they played the behind-the-screens with sorrows as the background music and fans sang along with it.

Did Ko left the troupe or something? I just realised he is not participating in this tour.

I believe there was a post around the time of a-nation this year that mentioned he wasn't returning.

rainbow_smile 8th November 2018 12:17 PM

Didn't she actually have a laundry machine for some sort of a lottery on stage?

I'm shocked with the laundry machine thing

absolutely. I'm still not over how awfully similar the ARENA TOUR setlist was to the CDL's, and that immature performance made it even worse because I think it should have been the opening song! it was sooo wonderful

You can play all your strength in the first act though, you need substance to keep your audience attention till the end (and since it was a 3 hours show, she need something big the end.) And I think it was brilliant to use the CDL budget to develop the Arena Tour in order to make a bigger tour.

hmm. I never saw it that way. good point. I feel like she really liked the CdM theme in general that she wanted the people who didn't attend CDL to see it as well, but in a much longer show. guess I'm just upset the nationwide tour wasn't completely brand-new + I wasn't crazy about many of the songs she ended up retaining.

evolutionricky 9th November 2018 04:10 AM

I might try to attend one of the Nakano Sun Plaza Hall tokyo events next year, anyone got their tickets?

pedronekoi 9th November 2018 06:56 AM

^ I got tickets for the first day :)

I miss the props too! Even the Hotel Love Songs letters on stage was a nice prop.

xLuna&1LOVE 9th November 2018 10:17 AM

It took me a while to realize she is sitting on an heart.

I thought it was a guitar lol. Totally didn't notice the arrow on the left side.

Aderianu 9th November 2018 01:57 PM

There was a #chupachups tag near this photo, so that's heart, guitar and chupa chups

Indeed I do. The ship sealed the deal for me as a fan. I was still figuring out at the time who Ayu was when I came upon that concert. That's when I realized if someone's willing to spend that sort of money for such a huge prop, only for the sake of what--it was on stage for 2 songs?--then this is absolutely someone huge and worth paying attention to. That's when I started seeking *all* her albums and concerts. Haven't regretted a thing since.

A020 is Ayu 20th anniversary, I think

And as people have already mentioned 10-02 is October 2nd, her birthday

Just got email from LivePocket regarding the COUNTDOWN concert... didn't get the ticket. Thankfully I have a ticket for her next concert in Ibaraki. Having the chance to see her two times on my trip to Japan would be awesome but I should be thankful that I got a ticket at all.

I am. :-) I generally don't pay attention to critics and gossip, and I've never been to a live concert, so even though I'm aware her voice isn't what it used to be, what I get to listen to is still a polished product. And as far as that goes, I haven't been disappointed yet. Except maybe for the length of something like the Trouble EP, but that only means I still want more.

Earlier this year I've discovered Namie Amuro and Koda Kumi. While they're both fantastic performers, my Ayu playlist is still about 3 times the size of their own respective playlists. And while their live concerts are fun in their own way, I've never felt like I wanted to rewatch one of their concerts more than once--unlike Ayu's.

And in the case of concerts, I think Ayu's band and dancers all have an on-stage presence I'm not seeing elsewhere - when they do have a band at all.
