Survivor (lyrics)

edit: Updated with the official lyrics.

Survivor

*
This place is literally
a concrete jungle
Hey, is there a city
more surreal than this one?
People on the outside
don’t know
the cruelty lurking deep within
the so-called cuteness

It’s like a snake wrapped around
a beautiful flower

Far, fly away
With you, try again
If it’s us, we can make it happen

The days when we were ablaze with dreams
are now long past
Nowadays we’re only attracted
to what’s realistic

So, you and me,
we’ll survive

The sweet smile of that person
who I often walk past,
I wonder if perhaps
that was really her crying face?

This kind of constraining sadness
is overflowing

Further, fly away
And try again
If it’s us, I feel we can save something

I don’t mean something overambitious
like saving the whole earth,
but, for example, the person next door

So, you and me,
we’ll survive

* repeat

Far, fly away
With you, try again
If it’s us, we can make it happen

The days when we were ablaze with dreams
are now long past
Nowadays we’re only attracted
to what’s realistic

So, you and me,
we’ll survive

Japanese lyrics:
Spoiler:

Thanks for the lyrics. Wow, this album is so qualitative in terms of lyrics.

"This place is literally a concrete jungle
Hey, is there a city more surreal than this one?
People on the outside don’t know
the cruelty lurking deep within the so-called cuteness"

Whoa, is she refering to Tokyo here?

truehappiness 12th May 2016 07:38 PM

"People on the outside don’t know
the cruelty lurking deep within the so-called cuteness"

Yeah, I think it's definitely Tokyo. But you could probably interpret it for New York or other cities too perhaps.

Absolutely beautiful. I think this song chronicles her departure from Japan to LA and her return with Mr.Darling. Very insightful.

Off-topic: but I think it's slightly ironic that she sings so negatively about the "modern era", yet one of her best friends is part of the darkness from the "modern era".

Again, thank you very much for the speedy translations. You're awesome tenshi. <3

Who is her best friend?

truehappiness 12th May 2016 08:49 PM

Timmy?

Natsuki is her bestie but she's been that from ages back.

Aga-chan 12th May 2016 09:12 PM

It's great that she tackles new types of lyrics. I feel that this is an important album for her. Though she is making social commentary, it seems so personal at the same time.

I think she is indeed talking about Tokyo. Or Maybe she did the same thing she did in "Free & Easy", write "world" but read it as "city"? We will see once we get the official lyrics. Really curious.

Thank you for the translation. ^^

Coelacanth 12th May 2016 09:19 PM

lol, the Japanese are not beyond reproach. Abe and his cronies willingly uphold the neoliberal status quo of capitalism, imperialism, and ecocide. Japan is really nothing more than a shill for the West and for the "modern era." Ditto for South Korea.

The kanji for "kawaii" is used. She is definitely referring to Japan in this song.

TheRainbow 12th May 2016 09:19 PM

I love this song more now. :D

Thank you so much for the lyrics.

I'm studying japanese since 2013. So, seeing your knowledge about japanese and your beautiful translations it gives me strength to continue studying ^^

Actually though, we have yet to get the official lyrics so we need to wait for those.

Aw, thank you. Good luck with your studies~

rainbow_smile 12th May 2016 09:38 PM

She's saying "machi" there, right? I though machi meant "town" as in something like a neighborhood, not as in a specific city i. e. Tokyo vs. LA etc.?

SayukiChoco 12th May 2016 09:54 PM

I was waiting for those! I love the lyrics so much. Even if the chanting is awkward, Survivor just became my favorite song from MADE IN JAPAN. The meaning is just so strong.

Oh yes I agree so much! I tried to translate Summer Love for myself today and I was so frustrated when I wasn't able to understand one word or translate it correctly.

So, really thank you tenshi no hane for giving us more strength to continue our studying! Your translations are so wonderful! :love

I learned 大都 (taito) or 大都市(daitoshi) for big cities whereas "machi" is more a smaller town. But I also think that she means Tokyo or other metropolises. Machi sounds better than taito or daitoshi in this case. I would think of it as kind of artistic license. Or maybe you can really use "machi" too.

Chibi-Chan 12th May 2016 10:48 PM

Thank you again!

Those are great again! I'm really happy with the lyrics this time.

Like the other ones: These aren't the official Japanese lyrics, there might be one or two errors. A big thanks to あやかTA♡2@twitter for a big chunk of the Japanese lyrics.

Wow, these are some STRONG lyrics. Really awesome, I love them. But, do you think that this song could get Ayu in trouble in Japan? Like, people might think she's betraying/dishonoring her country with lyrics like these?? And ruin her image even more lol...

truehappiness 13th May 2016 12:32 AM

People who hate her would hate her anyway. I think fans would like her more for these lyrics.

She's so blunt in this song, I love it.

pimenta 13th May 2016 03:29 AM

Once again, thank you so much for translating!

Really interesting lyrics, this album is gold.

Yeah, I think it's definitely Tokyo. But you could probably interpret it for New York or other cities too perhaps.

I don't think any other city is as much associated with cuteness as Tokyo. Perhaps translating "kawaii" as pretty or lovely would make it more universal. But the lyrics kind of have a "looking at Tokyo/Japan from the outside" feel to them, so I don't think that making them universal would be the way to go.

And Japanese people do indeed use "machi" when they talk about Tokyo etc. Though they usually use 街 instead of 町.
