Why "Vogue" ?

Well, I love this song, specially when she sings it Live, I love the Chinese style ^_^' I've seen the video, the translated lyrics.. But I can't see any connection between them and the title "vogue".. Could somebody explain this connection to me?

jerms 23rd April 2004 07:11 PM

lol. dictionary definition of vogue is...:think

Nicolas 23rd April 2004 07:20 PM

I think they are asking why the song was titled "vogue" in relation to te lyrics.
This song is about Ayu's fear that one day she will be gone and forgotten as a singer. Vogue is a word that more or less means "current fashion" or "current/trend/fashion/way of acting". I think Ayu felt that she was in "vogue" but one day she would not be. So that explain why she felt that one day she would not be "vogue" anymore.
Musically "vogue" is supposed to be influenced by "Arabic pops" just like "ourselves" but with some Latin influences also.
Its important to listen to "ever free" to hear Ayu making a happy 'change of mind' to the feelings in this song. She decides that even if she does loose her "vogue" one day, she will leave it up to fate. Personally, I don't think Ayu will ever be forgotten; considering her huge sucess as an artist.

That's ok Gohan. "vogue" is a very important song I feel. I'd like it if we could all undertand it.

AyuLover 23rd April 2004 11:03 PM

Then how do "Far away" and "SEASONS" fit into the picture?

Also...thanks for the intepretation of "vogue", but I still don't see the connection. I mean...the lyrics and part from the "Trilogy" PV don't seem to connect with your interpretation. (No offense).

Perhaps someone or (you) could explain the PV as well as the connections between the lyrics. I remember hearing that the "Trilogy" has 3 views- the present, past, and future or the top, bottom and side view; each song from the trilogy represents one of the views.

AyuLover 24th April 2004 03:30 AM

Oh yeah....I've read that before but still didn't get it.

im agree with nicolas! :)

Shiso 24th April 2004 09:54 AM

Thanks for the explanation Nicolas! It's very nice!

Nicolas 24th April 2004 11:45 AM

I'd read masa's article - that's all you need.

Nicolas 24th April 2004 11:47 AM

Regardless of whether you see the connection or not - that is the generally accepted interpretation of "vogue", not just my own. As I said, read masa's article to understand the "Trilogy" if you can as its the best place.

That seems to well explain her tanacity on creating new music all the time. Sure is a way to keep her in the public eye, isn't it? ^_^

Thanks Nicolas for the explaination ^^

I don't think the song was inspired by Madonna's. Madonna's is about celebrating the glamour of 1940's film stars. I think Madonna titled the song "Vogue" in relation to the dance she borrowed from nightclubs and used to choreograph to the song, rather than the lyrics. Ayu's is about her fear of "the end"..she worries one day she will no longer be "in Vogue", so Ayu's is a more direct use of that word that you might expect.
But, Ayu does admire Madonna. Even though I don't think she just picket the word "because Madonna used it" it might have brought the word to her attention. But that's just a guess. I think Ayu picked the word because it was suitable for her song and its a beautiful word in English more than anything else.

Wow...Nicolas's explanation sure made me appreciate vogue a lot more. I'm not really a big fan of the song vogue though. I like ever free better (I'm actually listening to it right now :P).

I don't feel comfortable taking the credit and your praise, I only learned about the meaning of "vogue" in detail from masa's articles.
I also enjoy the song. I think its one of Ayu's most diverse and interesting tracks from a musical view. Its also one that seems to be overlooked quite often. In fact, I'd say the Trilogy as a whole is overlooked. "vogue" and "Far away" don't get a lot of attention. "SEASONS", of course, became something of an anthem.

Thanks a lot for the explanation, Nicholas!! =)
I loved to know it... I still don't understand the trilogy very well, maybe it's because I haven't seen the PV for Far away yet.. But knowing the meaning of 'vogue' is great ^^" Thanks a lot!!

I agree about that, but at least "vogue" is featured in Countdown Lives and Arena Tours. "Far away" is the most overlooked-it's never been in any countdowns. It was only performed twice on music shows (Music Station and such..) and featured in Ayumi's Secret Concert 2000.

"SEASONS" has become a milestone in Japanese pop. Almost a classic.
