Korean Boy Bands, Anime: Saving Japan’s Music Biz?

Avex shares registered a fresh 2010 high on Thursday and shares are up 64% year-to-date versus a 12% decline in the broader Nikkei Stock Average.

The reasons are even more intriguing: a boost in CD and DVD sales linked to mega-hit animated series “One Piece” and the hugely popular South Korean boy band Tong Vfang Xien Qi, known better in Japan as Tohoshinki.

Earlier this year, the five-member South Korean pop group, which made a debut here in 2005, devastated fans with an announcement that it would cease group activities in Japan and focus on solo work. Fortunately for Avex, that sparked sales of a Tohoshinki greatest hits album and solo singles.

“I have to admit this bad luck has also brought us good luck,” said Avex spokesperson Taishi Arashida. “These guys are clearly beyond the conventional South Korean boom.”

Mmmkay. And I didn't realize one piece was still continuing. I used to watch it a few yrs ago when it aired in english
Anyhow i do think it was quite obvious that the release of a greatest hits album was just bound to sell more with the announcement at the time.

At least avex has been happy. Although I didn't think there was some drastic change in the japanese music industry. But I guess there is (?)

LOL.....saving Avex they mean. :rolleyes Korea's music business is worse than Japan's. Why do you think all the Koreans are going on a mass exodus over in the first place?

is it that bad in korea?

Polyrhythm 7th September 2010 04:17 AM

No its not THAT bad....its just not going anywhere that quickly....Korean idols are so popular....why not try to make as much money as they can while they're hot? Therefore they're trying to expand into the 2 countries with the most successful music industries.....the US and Japan. 0_o

Personally I think Tohoshinki is a exceptional case of extreme popularity of a Korean boy band in Japan. Not every Korean boy bands do good in Japan.

I think Anime music has always been a large part of Japanese music sales.
