Ayu Song Quote Tattoo

Hey everyone,
I have been thinking about getting a quote tattooed from one of Ayu's songs for a long time now. Ever since Love Songs came out I have been in love with a section of lyrics right at the end of Love song.

Japanese:
歌のない人生なんて
そんなの見当もつかない
ゆずれない想いがなけりゃ
つまんない意味がない
そうじゃない

Translation:
I can’t figure at all
A life without songs
Without uncompromisable thoughts
Life is boring and meaningless
Don’t you think so?

I have translated the quote myself and had someone else look at it. They said it was correct, but I have my doubts being that this will be on my body forever.

I would like it in traditional vertical japanese format on the top right of my back. It has deeper meaning that just being lyrics that Ayu wrote such as my love for japanese culture and being part of my musical background.

What does everyone thing? Does it make sense for a guy to have on his body? XD haha

Thanks :)

For lyrics+translations of song pre-Party Queen, this website is perfectly fine.

About you having a tattoo, I think there are some people here who have their bodies tattooed because of their love for Ayu. (cheesy lol) As for me, I'm not very fond of body art/tattooing so I don't know, but as a guy too I think it's fine to have the lyrics of your most fave song/artist etched on your body. For me it kinda makes me feel proud yet vain. :)

Oh that's nice :) I can't offer help with translation though. And I don't think you're exactly going to deviate from the typical gender roles here with that lol. Anyway I love those lyrics too.

I say go for it! :D
Oh, and take a picture once it's finished c:

I dunno, I think a lot of text can look messy, but the idea is good. I dont think that you would want 'dont you think so' tatooed lol. Maybe something like this 'life is meaningless without music' thats short enough and point is not lost.

I tend to favor Kiwi musume's translations simply because they sound more like someone whose first language is english, as opposed to someone like masa.

I still want to tatoo "A Song for XX' on my back :)

I agree with you! Just "Life is meaningless without music" or "I can't imagine a life without music" or something in that direction would be OK wouldn't it? I just mean that the whole chunk of text basically puts emphasize on that line. It's not needed to have so much characters tattooed. But then again, it may look awesome to have so much characters on your body. And then again, it can look messy. But then again it's more of a complete story if you have it all, but then again, if you don't like it after a while you can't erase it. BUT then again you'd probably don't want to erase it after all, but then again you grow out of ayu. It's an endless cycle.

I think text doesn't have to look messy, if done right. I do think that's a good quote though.

Writing can look good if you separate it nicely and choose a good size.
Talk with your tattooartist, they're really good at making it aesthetically pleasing.

I have a quote from a Gackt song on my back like this;

I'm very happy with it, but at the same time I have 5 other tattoos that vary in size from wrist tatt to half my upper body. So if that will be your only tattoo, don't go overboard with colours and size, keep it slightly clean.

If i was you, i'd cut out 'そうじゃない' (so janai) because its not really that important for the meaning and it comes less of a clutter

Thanks for all the input.
I think im going to stay with the entire quote.
If I reduced it, i feel that the connection to Ayus lyrics is lost.
I designed it in photoshop so this is the idea:

Personally, if I were going to tattoo a quote on me, I wouldn't remove half of the lyric for appearance sake. I'd figure out ways to rework the tattoo design so that you can fit all of it in. I'd say do some research on lyric tattoos, even traditional yakuza tattoos and how they are places, since they use a lot of traditional Japanese imagery. Personally, I like the idea of a rib tattoo, if you wanna write it in traditional right to left, top to bottom in a small size text. It gives enough room and looks good, following the length of your body. Or, on the right shoulder blade. That's just my opinion, anyway.

I have to say, I like the idea of getting lyrics much more than getting an 'A' tattoo. This way, if you ever fall out of love with Ayu's music, there is still a line that you can connect with. I don't listen to sifow's music much anymore, though I still love her and her lyrics. I want to get some of hers tattooed. They really motivate and move me. One day I won't really care about her looks or the sound of her music, but a quote that I know means to be strong will still have meaning to me.

It sounds like a great idea. I wouldn't mind some of my favorite lyrics with an Ayu logo as tattoos. Go for it!

But remember that it needs to be at least as big as the one I have for the kanji to be readable. So this will cover a very big amount on your back. (But if you're a guy it should be okay. On a girl this might be way too much.)

jewelbox 22nd July 2012 12:01 PM

^Why can't girls have big tattoos? :D

kimmeh 22nd July 2012 12:17 PM

No, thats not what i meant! :) I have very big tattoos myself. I just meant that if you were gonna have 4 lines of text down your back (and for the kanji to be readable you need a certain size) it might look too much on a girl, since girls have much .. 'narrow' (?) back compared to men.

jewelbox 22nd July 2012 12:37 PM

^Ah I thought you might have meant something like that ! :)
And I agree, a narrow back might look funny if it's filled with a lots of text

This is a great idea, Visual-Emotion!! I say go for it! I am having similar thoughts about a lyric tattoo added to my existing Ayumi tattoo (I just posted a thread about it), but I think you should definitely go for it! Like a few people have said, it's a much more personal thing than having the Ayumi A or some of her other designs, and if you really connect and love a lyric, then I don't think you'll regret it all! I too want mine to read top to bottom, and I think keeping as much of the original line in is good too; you don't want to change the lyrics if they mean that much to you. Do you plan on just having the text, or anything else with it? Also, will you have it done in a calligraphy style, or general text style? I'm really interested, as I keep changing my mind about my own idea!

Visual-Emotion 1st August 2012 12:22 PM

I originally wanted it in calligraphy style, but I decided on a font because I can not find ANYWHERE to get it that way. Its a stylized japanese font not too plain haha. And just the quote, but I can always add a faded abstract color background later! Im also getting it on thursday! Aug 2nd! Ill post a picture! :)

i LOVE tattoo's with traditional Japanese vertical writing. that's the same kind of style i was going to get with some Ayu lyrics. ^^ as well as her symbol across my back. i say you should go for it, i think it would look great!
