Japan is the land of the fads, and one of the latest ‘in’ things is ‘marshmallow girls‘, which is basically what we know as ‘plus-sized’ in the West.

So, of course, the pop industry HAD to take advantage of this, and Avex joined up with fashion magazine CanCam for a ‘chubby girl’ audition to make an idol group.

And thus, we have Chubbiness.

Just to get an idea of how odd this is, Japan is a place where when comedians see a fat person (women, especially) on variety shows, they’ll go up to them and do sumo motions and put that on national television. For idols, some companies have monthly weigh-ins.

So … yeah.

Anyway, Chubbiness has already advertised that all of the members enjoy eating, so you know it’s a gimmick, but at least it’s an original take.

Now how long before they replace all the members like Piggy Dolls or make them lose weight?

YUKARI 29th January 2014 02:35 PM

they aren't fat at all! gimme girls like Matsuko Deluxe!!

AyuGAME 29th January 2014 03:17 PM

they are barely fat...they are so fit..

ak.malfoy 29th January 2014 03:31 PM

That's. Not. Fat. :o

Maemi 29th January 2014 04:13 PM

:D Here are the members' pics, if you are interested: http://www.asianjunkie.com/2014/01/a...ed-chubbiness/

Lol I think the idea behind is good, for a country where idols are pressured to stay thin, I think the approach is a bit weird though lol

The girls aren't even chubby... more like.. normal? They do look very cute though

Kazeyomi 29th January 2014 04:42 PM

The name is.. ugh. It's like there's a tall girls idol group and they're called "Heights", seriously :rolleyes

They're chubby compared to 99% of average thin female idols but they're rather normal for me. If I were in Japan I would be labeled as "morbidly obese" then, lol.

kimmeh 29th January 2014 04:49 PM

How is the girl to the bottom left fat?!?

Delicious n Bold 29th January 2014 05:08 PM

What a damn mess.
If you're one pound over 100 pounds, you're basically as good as a blimp in Japan.

milky_way 30th January 2014 12:39 AM

This reminds me of Piggy Dolls in Korea. How long until they switch out all the members for skinnier ones?

TeamAyu2004 30th January 2014 12:43 AM

marshmallow girls and chubbiness?
Really?

lol

I dislike the name. But if their music is good, then it shouldn't really matter. Although the approach to it is still kind of...strange.

I agree, I won't follow this group but I think the idea is nice in a place like Japan where idols are forced to get thin

Sandy 31st January 2014 11:14 PM

Sure, nice idea but I have a feeling that they (avex) did this for all the wrong reasons :shakehead
I hope their music is awesome and I hope people would respect them but I'm afraid we have all kinds of "those fat girls" -articles ahead of us... Ugh, I'm feeling sick to my stomach already

GREENsora 31st January 2014 11:21 PM

they're so cute! but sheesh, the approach is so wrong

Polyrhythm 31st January 2014 11:47 PM

In related news, Misono does a la Miyazaki and announces her un-retirement.

This is very relevant.

& + H 1st February 2014 02:01 AM

Oh yeah they are so chubby. not.

happiholic★ 4th February 2014 03:47 AM

They are not plus sized if you use North American standards :laugh

Hate to say it, but I feel like they are more of a gimmick than avex trying to promote "healthy body image".

marty 4th February 2014 08:16 PM

Omg... Japan, what the hell?
This makes me so uncomfortable, and I even can't pinpoint why...
