CK IN A NUTSHELL
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sV3wzRE1Lv...+Kay+VIVID.png
Name: Crystal Kay Williams
Nicknames: Kuri (クリ), CK
Born: February 26, 1986; Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan
Label: EPIC Records (Sony) [1999-2011], Delicious Deli Records (Universal) [2011-2016], Virgin Music JPN (Universal) [2016-]
Genre: R&B, Urban, Pop, #yokohamaratchetpop
Why you should care: Crystal Kay is one of the biggest names in Japanese R&B, so she's a must for any fan of the genre. Her later works shift more toward the pop end of the spectrum, and she nails that amazingly as well. Crystal has a great voice and knows how to use it, and she is not a one trick pony: ballads, dance pop, R&B jams, rapping, many collaborations, high notes, low notes, she does it all, and you will probably like it.

BIOGRAPHY
Spoiler:
Born to a U.S. serviceman and an ethnic Korean, both residing in Yokohama, Crystal Kay made a name for herself in the J-pop scene with a mix of song styles, some in a standard J-pop format and others based more on American '90s R&B (SWV, Tony! Toni! Tone!). With her first album coming early, in 2000 (when Crystal was only 14), she began building a sound on a basis of R&B, infusing otherwise standard idol material with more of her own musical influence and breaking away from the norm a bit in the process. By her third album, Kay was selling in huge numbers, solidifying herself as an R&B singer before the J-urban movement had begun to develop. Positioning herself as a cultural cross-product of sorts, she continued a rise through five additional albums and slight hints of future overseas forays, with 2007's ALL YOURS hitting the number one slot on the Oricon charts upon its debut.

I've been a bit out of loop with the j-pop scene and especially CK for a while now but I just listened to Rule Your World and I'm totally loving it! I'm not really digging Busy Doing Nothing though, it's a nice feel-good song but a bit.. idk, meh.

Kacku 13th May 2014 03:54 PM

Agree 100%. Busy Doing Nothing is more like what I usually go for but it's just so... insubstantial. It's fun and peppy but there's nothing memorable about it. Rule Your World represents a style I tend to dislike but it does so many things right, it's a really good listen, keeps me coming back.

The video for Rule Your World should be available soon! As in about five minutes from now! Excited!

EDIT: Here it is!

You just said exactly what I was thinking! BDN is so unmemorable, I honestly can't remember what it sounds like anymore.. it's a nice song but it would've been a lot better if they made it more, idk, exciting? It's too safe right now :no

Haha I actually really like Rule Your World's style! The rap part still makes me lol though but at least it's fun and fits the song structure imo

Anyways, I just watched the MV. It looks kinda cheap and CK seemed a bit uncomfortable but at least she looks damn gorgeous! She reminds me of Beyoncé toward the end where her hair is tied on a bun haha. And damn, the guy at the beginning is hot!! :luv2

Yeah that dude is way too good looking.

setsuka 14th May 2014 02:25 AM

k so far its

RYW : great song but bad video
BDN: bad song but great video

hopefully on try number three she will get both right and some miracle will happen it will smash!

i don't understand, why if asian artist want to breakthrough Western market always need to use sexual thing...

We already have so much prove that it's not working.

tokyoxjapanxfan 23rd May 2014 03:52 PM

I'm super underwhelmed by the three songs she's released.

I never really felt like she should try to break into the western market. In Japan, she was different; special. Her sales were pitiful, but at least she was established lol. But in the western market, she's one of so many girls doing the same type of thing. She'd have to do something to make her stand out... and she doesn't seem to have the production behind her to achieve that.

I don't know, I hope she gets back to Japan eventually. I still think she could revamp her sales if the promotion was there. But that's not really her fault...

TeamAyu2004 23rd May 2014 04:04 PM

I didnt realize she was trying to break into the western bizz...
Hmm... Havent listened to the first song, but this one, rule your world is okay.

I find it odd that people pick mediocre sounds and visuals when trying to break out... you need to go all out to impress people... not well... lets see if this works.

Kaiouforever 3rd July 2014 06:55 AM

I need some new Japanese singles/album from her!

tokyoxjapanxfan 3rd July 2014 03:46 PM

I as well.

I noticed DJ Kaori has Forever on her latest remix album. Haven't heard it yet though

orangeakira 3rd July 2014 04:26 PM

So many asian artists have attempted to breakthrough in the American market and fail. Most of the time their songs are actually pretty awesome. I think people are just afraid of the "weird" Japanese stereotype. Also a lot of people are kinda uncultured. (I've run into so many fucking people who thing "Gangnam Style" is Chinese) I really wish her luck with this. Rule the world is a really sexy song.

Also whatever happened to Dum Ditty Dumb?

NintendoHTF1242 3rd July 2014 08:19 PM

Rule Your World is honestly really, really sexy. But the rap section is so awful and embarrassing that I hope she doesn't think she can breakthrough with that. Especially because she labels her music as YOKOHAMA RATCHET POP. What.

tokyoxjapanxfan 11th July 2014 06:17 PM

Ugh you guys I really need new music from her :-(
New Japanese music that is.

It was her 15th anniversary on July 1st. I was actually Crystal's fan before Ayu's. ;)

ILoveGeniuses 15th July 2014 03:08 PM

RYW I like but BDN is boring and unmemorable. Still I feel both aren't as good as the stuff she was doing in Japan. Still, if she's trying to break into the US, shouldn't she be trying to get some promotion outside of just posting the videos on youtube and other online social networks? I haven't heard her on the radio or heard about her being on TV or in any magazines. :(

NintendoHTF1242 29th August 2014 09:08 AM

As with any Asian artist wanting to crossover, I want Crystal Kay to be successful. But her approach to the market is just so wrong. Busy Doing Nothing is really, really good as a lead single or whatever she's doing. But Rule Your World and Dum Ditty Dumb have the Japanese lyric sections and honestly, that shit won't fly here in the US mainstream. I know she's experimenting and whatever, but I would love for Crystal Kay to become popular. Especially since she has the attitude and swag for the US mainstream. But Crystal rapping the Hibachi menu in the Rule Your World breakdown is so cheesy and awful. She needs a better approach in regards to her music. Because honestly, Rule Your World is SO sexy and I can see this song becoming a hit; but that fucking. awful. rap. I get that she's trying to promote her "YOKOHAMA RATCHET POP" thing but like, just no.

^I think it's because they don't understand that our marketing strategies and techniques work much different here and also the differences in our culture. There's a lot of overly emotional and even sappy/cheesy popular stuff in Japan, but that just won't work here. People don't want it. There is some old music in the past that used to be like that a couple decades ago, but that's also something that you can't base our current music off of when you want to enter our market.

Pretty much. Rule Your World is really good. The instrumentation is sexy, Crystal Kay's vocals are sexy, and the lyrics are on and poppin'; but then that cheesy rap section ruins the entire thing. Same with Dum Ditty Dumb; the chorus is good but she overloads it with Japanese and the US mainstream doesn't want that. Busy Doing Nothing should have done good but Crystal doesn't know how to promote at all. Maybe she could do some big collaboration or something.

ILoveGeniuses 30th August 2014 01:40 PM

TBH, with her not being fully Asian I'm surprised she doesn't know as much about the other side of her heritage that she could pull it off. I honestly figured if anyone in the Asian music industry wouldn't add all the Japanese and cheesy stuff in it'd be her. I hope the way I phrased that didn't come off offensive in any way....
