ayu's stage presence

I was just thinking after watching some clips of other English artists preforming live and they all seem to miss what ayu has. She may not have a OMG god voice but her stage presence is like that which you rarely see. Ayu might not of moved much in early concerts and that, but she can just draw your attention to her without doing much and not looking sloppy. Even in her tv lives she has that stage presence. Though I did have a friend who thought to begin with she was a hologram in AT2007 :P But what do other people thing of her stage presence compared to other performers, or is it just because she is my top artist I follow that I see her in this light :P

I think there are some performers out there who just have this massive stage presence that make them monsters when it's about performing...

Ayu, Madonna, Beyoncé, Ivete Sangalo, Thalia, Mylene Farmer, Faye Wong, Uhm Jung Hwa...

You can't just not look at them.

It's charisma.

Andrenekoi 23rd November 2015 06:23 AM

^I agree charisma plays a huge part, but it's not 100% of it... It's a mix of charisma, of not being afraid of the public or of the stage, of actually having pleasure of being on the stage.

So once they are there, they feel confortable, and safe, and they give their all to the performance. Most of people are afraid of the judgement of the public, and most of them wouldn't really perform in front of strangers as their daily job.

Even when you check out the performers in pop music, it's hard to find artists who actually seen to be 100% confortable once they are on the stage... You can always find that hint of doubt or fear on their eyes, or they are so reharshed they are pretty much on the automatic mode onde the lights are one. Probably because a lot of them weren't really born to do that, and were mostly pretty people on the right place at the right time.

Spoiler:

Don't forget kumi, though lately her presence on stage has been questionable in my eyes.:P

I find that kumi loses my interest with her tours. I love her intros and dance songs but other than that I lose interest :P
No matter what ayu sings, you are drawn to her :) she's just stunning, and with her eyes help with that too

And I agree with the other comments too :)
I guess this is were the goddess remarks come from

She definitely has great stage presence. She can really make her lyrics hit home at times. However, I feel every step and every wave she makes is choreographed nowadays and it takes away from her natural spark.

Uknow! 23rd November 2015 09:29 AM

She is incredible. I was seeing Rock'n'Roll Circus with my friend and she told me "I'm thinking this performance is one of the most awesome I've seen and she is only singing to the mic" It was About You performance.

She has the charm and only a few artist have it. Ayu has a plus for me too and are her emotions, she always is trying to express the feelings with all the elements of the performance. Remember AT 2007, when the end of the tour was near, she wanted to change 1LOVE performance because she thought they lost fierceness. I also noticed that she can put aside the aesthetics in order to express. She isn't like an idol what her most important thing is being pretty and cool. Ayu only think to take a good performance and express her music, but of course, her acts are very aesthetic too haha

Koda gives me a constant "is this cool enough?" vibe while she is on stage... It's like she is always trying hard to getting the attention, and this IMO makes her presence questionable... I saw some of her performances from before she hit it big, where her only concern seemed to be giving an enterteining performance, and she was completely magnetic, but once the structure got bigger the effect ceased.

^ Best Second Session Tour 2006 for example?. She was incredible. It's my favourite concert of her and Love Goes Like my favourite performance of her career.

Gustavopc 23rd November 2015 01:19 PM

^ That performance is still one of my fav of hers now that you mentioned it

I guess that ayu is also a good performer cause she is very close to the music she is singing. Being her who wrote the lyrics, she knows what every line is about, and so she delivers it in a strong way, be it a sad or happy song. She is not just performing on stage, she is presenting us a story about that song, and that's why she's such a great artist on stage imo :yes

stepYOU1234 23rd November 2015 01:19 PM

Yeah, there is just something about Ayu that draws you in.

Also, @andrenekoi we've got a Mylene Farmer thread going in the general music chat section :D

She tends to have the same effect on her covers too^^

I saw it! Queen Mylene deserves a thread! <3

mizuki-7 23rd November 2015 01:39 PM

In fact Ayu is in Japan what Mylene Farmer is for France when it come to the stage presence/concert etc... they are not from the same generation and country but they are so alike in a lot of aspects !! They are all about emotions and sincerity on stage ! Everything is calculated with precision backstage but they have their imperfection and they play on stage with their heart they are not like robots like a bunch of popstars !

I love that song from the tour, love the background video too :) My friend also like her more because she can dance good, but I guess she is a mother now so maybe that has something that changed the way she acts. But she has some good concert entrances too

It does depend if you're a fan or not and how big.
e.g. I think both ayu and Kuu have great stage presences.
Both got fans because of their live performances and how they act on stage.
But as it's about ayu - she does bore me, when she is just standing on stage, without doing much, especially with high energy songs.
e.g. the DJ set at the last CDL. She just doesn't shine there. Or when she's just using too much dancers on stage. She's often drowned by them. And I do wonder sometimes, if she doesn't feel as comfortable alone on stage as she did in the past.

melissalove 23rd November 2015 05:07 PM

I love ayu but her constant standing around on stage makes it difficult to call her a performer. though her presence is really good.

See Step by step during her last AT I posted above.

ayumisrael 23rd November 2015 07:22 PM

Well, she has to feel comfortable alone on stage if she does the TA tour at the moment.
We still have performances like teddy bear to confirm that too. She looks so natural and powerful.

Corvina 23rd November 2015 07:38 PM

Hm, but she isn't really alone on stage with her TA Tour. Doesn't she still have, apart from her band, also dancers with her?
But that's why I said sometimes. ;)
She doesn't do it often though.
