Ayumi, the Smashing Pumpkins, and Sept. 11 ???

Ok...I have two questions.

I've heard that the song Endless Sorrow was given that title because Ayumi is a fan of The Smashing Pumpkins, and they had a cd or something called "Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness."

Infinite Sadness = Endless Sorrow ???

And also, is A Song is Born really a tribute song to September 11th and was the planned cover of the album I am... changed in response to September 11th?

I heard about the A Song Is Born thing too I think it was in relation to September 11 but Im not sure about the Smashing Pumpkins one :think thatd be pretty wicked tho

Calico 9th October 2004 05:27 AM

A Song Is Born IS in tribute to Sept. 11th. A bunch of artists collaborated together, and all of the sales of their singles went towards a Sept. 11th fund. The singles includde A Song is Born (Ayu and Keiko), Lovin' It (Namie Amuro and VERBAL I think...) and The Meaning of Peace (BoA and Koda Kumi).

I also heard that the original title of Endless sorrow was SEPIA...but because some other artist (I think Shela?) was coming out with a song called that around the same time, they told Ayu to change it. =\ I only heard that once, somewhere...

^ May have been the same place that I heard it was derived from the Smashing Pumpkins, haha!

Lovin' it seems like an odd song name for a tribute to Sept. 11. Then again, I don't think I've actually heard it.

Actually, the planned cover (rumoured) for "I am..." was Dearest's. Or at least that's what I read.

I'm not sure about the Ayu-Smashing-Pumpkins connection. This is the first I ever heard about it. Calico hit it right on the nose about A Song is Born.

But about the I am... cover. According to Ayu on TIME magazine (at least I think it was TIME), she said that it was going to be more extravegant and what not, but decided to go that route since 911.

That's Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness. Great album, I must add. However, I have never heard of this supposed connection.

interesting idea, but i dont think SP and endless sorrow are connected

PickleCookies 10th October 2004 01:40 AM

Smashing Pumpkins suck. (in my opinion :rolleyes)

Ibitsu Kokoro 10th October 2004 01:45 AM

If you read the interview, ayumi had a rock influence at the time of i am and was listening to the smashing pumpkins. Oh and picklecookies, some people might like them so don't just make a statement like that.

PickleCookies 10th October 2004 01:52 AM

Better?

Lorelei 10th October 2004 02:47 AM

If there is a connection between SP and Ayu, and even if there isn't, it could just be a coincidence^^ stranger things have happened.

I thought Ayu listened to them when she was little, when her neighbour's brother influenced her music taste or something. Maybe I remember wrong..

ohsixthirty 10th October 2004 07:50 AM

Oooh, so Endless Sorrow is inspired (title at least) by the Smashing Pumpkins. :)

Nothing wrong with those good old Pumpkins.

Billy Corgan : Billy Corgan, Smashing Pumpkins.
Homer : Homer Simpson, smiling politely.

Mmm ... well, I don't think Ayu ever released that album cover. However, I think it's great that she chose I am ..., the current one for the cover. It is like so totally pretty and I just love it so much. It's kind of sad too, I mean yar, it's all to remember those who were lost. It's the least Ayu could do, promote world peace (only to fall on deaf ears ...)

kournikova 11th October 2004 01:12 PM

dun understand... .. ^^

julian 11th October 2004 03:03 PM

Now I'm curious, did she actually already do the photoshoot for the original I am... album cover or did she just change ideas at the last minute? I'd love to get my hands on the original album pictures if they exist

007_kenshin 11th October 2004 03:34 PM

If I remember somewhere correctly, she had a completly different Album she was going to have but she changed it at the last moment due to the disaster of 9/11

She thought that people were in a state of distress so she changed the mood of the Ablum into I am... and A Song Is Born was a charity single duet with KEIKO for 9/11

Delirium-Zer0 11th October 2004 05:43 PM

I think she had the idea, but I don't know if she'd taken the photos yet. The album was due out for release in october or november though, and it was delayed to 1/01 because of the change of plans after 9/11.
