New York, NY – July 22, 2005 – With the growing popularity of Japanese pop culture in the U.S. in video games, animation (anime), sports, fashion, movies and music, the top-ranked AOL Radio Network today announced the launch of its exclusive Japanese Pop station. The station was added to the roster by popular demand after the successful May launch of AOL Radio's Video Game Scores station, which features original music scores from popular video games, many of which are Japanese.

“It’s not surprising that the demand for popular Japanese music is so great,” said Mike Spinella, a music director for the AOL Radio Network. “The influence of Japanese culture is everywhere in U.S. as a result of popular video games and anime; and now we see it in everything from Gwen Stefani’s Hirajuku Girl entourage to the popularity of baseball stars such as Ichiro Suzuki and Hideki Matsui. The AOL Radio audience is extremely music-savvy and always seeking out new genres of music to explore. We’re excited to respond to the multiple weekly e-mails we’ve received by offering the Japanese Pop station.”

Bringing together Japan’s most popular Hip-Hop, Rock and Dance music, the Japanese Pop station features a diverse playlist of hit “J-POP” artists including Hamasaki Ayumi, Utada, Puffy AmiYumi, Yuki, Orange Range, Crystal Kay and many more.

AOL Radio’s Japanese Pop station is available 24/7 for fans, free on the web at AOL.com and www.aolmusic.com, as well as at AOL Keyword: Radio.

The AOL Radio Network is the #1 online radio network with over 16 million unique visitors per month,* and over 200 stations of music, news, sports and talk. The network has more than 175 originally programmed music stations, which also feature recordings from AOL Music's popular AOL Music Sessions, intimate in-studio performance series; AOL Music LIVE! weekly concert series; First Listens, worldwide debuts of the most eagerly anticipated songs before they are available anywhere else; All-Artist stations and Celebrity DJ stations. In addition, the network features third party stations from some of the most respected names in broadcasting.

Click yes to Install the components, and click on World, and you'll see 'Japanese Pop'. I turned it on and LOVE PSYCHEDELICO's 'Your Song' was playing!! I was like, 'Yes, I know this song!' Utada's 'Addicted To You' is on now.

wow...hope US can hear how GOOD the japanese music was

Coelacanth 24th July 2005 02:33 AM

For me they keep playing Utada, Porno Graffitti, Ai Otsuka, and Kazumasa Oda. I think there are different playlists because my friend and I were both listening at the same time and he was getting different songs than I was. :shrug

Annabelle 24th July 2005 03:01 AM

I think it can make people discover Japanese music, it's a really good move from AOL (this must be the only good thing they've done actually..). My playlist is filled with Crystal Kay, Gackt, Hikki and Yuki songs :P The "Buy the cd" link dosen't even work :no

Off topic: "See Hilary evolve from Tween idol to Sexy Diva" OMG :lmfao

MsMiyabi 24th July 2005 04:34 AM

I tried it out and heard Crystal, Ai, Hikki, and someother artist .

It works fine for me but give aol a change for more music

evil_rem 24th July 2005 08:30 AM

It sounds awesome, but sadly it won't work on my browser. *shrug* At least it will get more people listening to Jpop!

NyoNyo 24th July 2005 11:45 AM

uhhhh..... some question.

can we use the radio without installing the AOL? i don't install AOL.......

i wanna hear it too T^T

and is it only for US?

Mirai Noah 24th July 2005 05:09 PM

Interesting... I'll give it a try!

Minimum_Payne 25th July 2005 05:35 AM

damn I hate AOL but this is a great idea. I hope MS follows up with something similar. :D

the thing I don't like about these internet radio stations is it's just pure music, unlike real radio stations that has djs who would talk a little, read some fan e-mails, have a few laughts and then play music again.

Yes you can just use internet explorer 5.5 or higher. Just click the Listen Now link on the homepage. Then accept the installation for the player :)

I think this is really cool, but they should feature it on the front page or something. How are people suppose to know about it despite it being introduced?
