Yuna Ito's ENDLESS STORY is not original

Hey everyone! I sent my friend Yuna Ito's ENDLESS STORY and he immediately recognized the melody as belonging to Faith Hill's "If I'm Not in Love". I listened to both songs and the only place where they slightly differ is the chorus.

Well, you can't expect every composer to come up with a totally original melody all the time, can you. =X

Well the original composer is credited in the CD booklet, so they must've purchased the copyright to the melody. So no harm, no foul...
Thanks for the info though. :)

They probably did this in an attempt to establish her as an artist (She's new, according to what I read in another thread). Although I'm not sure how popular Faith Hill is in Japan...

I just got out my mom's Faith Hill CD, and yeah, it's almost the exact same melody, expect the chorus. If I recall correctly, the author of the NANA manga wrote the lyrics for ENDLESS STORY, so I guess they put the Faith Hill melody together with her lyrics and then tweaked it.

Thanks for pointing that out! I knew that ENDLESS STORY reminded me of another song...

Ai yazawa, the author of NANA, didn't write the lyrics to ENDLESS STORY. She only wrote the lyrics to Mika Nakashima's GLAMOROUS SKY. In the booklet, the songwriters are:

lyrics and music: D.A. Thomas (I believe that's Diane Ann Thomas)
Japanese lyrics: ats
arrangement: H/\L

It also has the copyright listed as well.

People do this type of thing all the time, in America, Japan, everywhere. So it's not uncommon to find that someone has excerpted another song from another artist or did a different version of it.

I know that Faith Hill has done TV commercials in Japan, but I don't think she is very well known there.
