SWEETBOX & AYUMI HAMASAKI

Not really new news...but found it just now in sweetbox official site www.sweetbox.com

Probably talking bout that they also love ayu's ver. of their songs

SWEETBOX & AYUMI HAMASAKI
One of the biggest stars in Japan, Ayumi Hamasaki, listend last year to Sweetbox' GREATEST HITS album and loved the music! When she also listend to the demos of the new Sweetbox album she loved them even more and chose 6 tracks for her own new album which was released on 1st Jan 2006: 1. Bold & Delicious 2. Ladies Night 3. In The Corner 4. Pride 5. Beautiful Day 6. Rainy Day .AYU wrote her own lyrics to GEO's compositions and her producer Max Matsura gave them his own interpretation of songs. Hopefully you like the tracks as well as we do!!

and she better not do it again XD

FuNsTyLe 21st February 2006 05:09 PM

Yeah.. And a good thing they stated that Ayu wrote her own lyrics, not just used the same lyrics (cheap)

Btw, is SweetBox' album out? I'd like to hear how her version of the songs sound like

Edit:

Omg... her songs are so lame..!! Lyrics really suck, and the arrangments and melodies arent as good as Ayu's either.. Ladies night sounds much more vague and quiet, whereas Ayu's ver. sounds more tough and really cheerful... Does Jade write her own lyrics? Gee, I'm disappointed in her anyways, cause the lyrics really really suck!
I did like Beautiful Girl (Beautiful Day) though:)

I didn't know she used so many songs! How un-creative... I guess, she was running out of time and she didn't had enough songs for the album. I like most of them, tough.

At first I also had the same opinion as you did, that Ayu rushed it, and just picked some songs. But if you read the lyrics Ayu wrote for them, they don't seem so shallow and unpersonal after all. Ayu takes the songs, and turns them into her own in a way:)

How is using music composed by GEO more 'uncreative' or 'unoriginal' than using music composed by DAI, BOUNCEBACK, etc?

Yeah I totally agree with you. It's nonsense. One thing is that I personally don't like many of the songs Geo composed (although I think ayu's versions were fuller and less bland than the Sweetbox' ones), it still doesen't make it unoriginal. If so, ayu hasen't got many "original" and "creative" songs. It's not like she makes the arrangements or mixes herself either, and that has a great deal to do with the finished song too, f.ex in the case of the parallell songs of addicted and (m)u it's really clear.

chibi_sunny 21st February 2006 06:32 PM

^ its alright for me as long as she writes her own lyrics.

PURIN 21st February 2006 06:37 PM

At first, I didnt really like GEo's compositions but im starting to like a few , like Rainy Day, Pride and Ladies Night, hoever B&D, in the corner are pretttyyyy hideous

Great way for GEO / Sweetbox to ride off Ayu's fame tho lol

Ryoko 21st February 2006 06:50 PM

I think the main problem here is that Ayu used GEO's compositions, and then Sweetbox came out with their own versions of those songs. It's almost like having DAI compose a song for Ayu, and Ayu uses it as a song, and then Do as Infinity uses that same song. It just makes it seem unoriginal.

Exactly. I think ayu was actually very original, if you listen to sweetbox' versions, she added her own touch to those songs and, in my opinion, gave a totally different light to them. If you listen to the sweetbox previews you can clearly tell that. Also ayu wrote her own lyrics and adapted them in order that they don't really sound weird at all. It's not an easy job to transform an english song into a japanese.
Making a cover song doesn't make it less original or uncreative when the artist add their own personal touch. Hitomi Shimatani did a fantastic job to Janet Jackson's "Doesn't really matter", she put her own lyrics and her version actually sounds much better than the original, it was also a song that made shimatani famous so it was definitely very original of her to make such a cover.
GEO was offered to compose for ayu and she accepted but he asked her to choose one of the already created compositions he had done. What does that make it less original than to what actually happened to the "A Song for XX" album in which she was asked to choose among various already pre-produced melodies for all the songs? Not a single difference really ;)

If GEO permitted there was probably an agreement with SWEETBOX as well, no wonder they're proudly announcing that at the moment. It was an honor for them to be recognized by ayu and they surely want the ride they will be able to take on that fact.
amasia landscape made a mini aslbum using DAI compositions of Do As Infinity song and she sang them with her own english lyrics. It was a very original work. I didn't like it because her vocals are weak but if she had done a good job it would have been completely different. ayu by the other side did a pretty excellent job to GEO compositions.

how is recycling written lyrics and using cheap eye candy to draw attention to yourself NOT unoriginal?

GEO's style is typical and generic aka unoriginal.

see?

I agree -Ayu made those songs her own. I'm just saying that people probably feel that it was unoriginal because of the fact that Sweetbox was also using those compositions.

Although I don't particularly care for GEO, he has made some great songs.

She didn't recycle the lyrics other than the phrases "Bold & Delicious" "It's/What's a beautiful..." and "Ladies Night" along with the titles (probably makes less than 5% of what was written in all of those songs). The rest was totally written by ayu and unrelated to the original lyrics (look at the "In the Corner" lyrics, they have no connection at all)
GEO's style is typical and generic, so were the JPOP compositions from A Song for XX....It still was a very original album in my opinion.

Blah.

I'm just happy with the songs Ayu will be releasing in the near future. Not interpretations of other people's songs. I like the way she writes her own emotions in music .. not the ones similar to other artists.

LacusClyne 22nd February 2006 12:27 AM

nice to know that ayu is mention. before we start to debate over GEO's music again, i've got something that worrying me ever since ayu release the songs before SWEETBOX.
Could there be SWEETBOX fans who had NEVER heard of ayu, be very unpleased that ayu took the songs first? we could be disliking GEO's music, but SWEETBOX fans might be angry over ayu. i'm very scared to read what those papers in the future would say....
