How many rock-ish songs does ayu have?

As I know, ayu has few rock-ish songs, but I am not sure if I am right..
Here is the list:

Because of You
Memorial Address
GAME
About You
is this LOVE?
(miss)understood
A Song for XX <--- A BALLADS that version
Ladies Night ~another night~

Please help me to edit my list and correct me.

End of the World
girlish
I am..
NEVER EVER
Daybreak
Heartplace
alterna
criminal

PickleCookies 21st June 2006 05:12 AM

still alone

SunshineSlayer 21st June 2006 05:29 AM

Liar
Free & Easy
Step YOU (poppy, but still really rock at heart)
Surreal
Evolution
Unite
Endless Sorrow
M (to a lesser extent)
A Song For Xx

She has many really. She probably has close to as many rock songs as she does pop now.

ruixiong89 21st June 2006 06:48 AM

Mmm ... I wouldn't really consider UNITE! as a rock song. Neither do I think Endless Sorrow or Free & Easy are rock songs. I think they are rock-orientated songs but I still they're pretty much pop than rock. I don't know, it's up to you to decide.

Songs like I am ... and (miss) understood are very obviously rock.

sora2522 21st June 2006 07:06 AM

humming 7/4...liar....most of the songs on MY STORY...
about you
INSPIRE....
look on MY STORY...there's alot on there

First of all I'd just like to write that now a days, and especially in japanese music, there are hardly any boundraries in music, and thus it's hard to make a line for what's rock and not...

In japan it isen't rock just because it has lot of el guitars and the like, then Kacchoize! JAPAN would be very much rock, but it clearly isen't. Like f.ex in the case of M, there are so many dance elements that I woulden't consider it rock. The beat and overall feel is not what I associate with "real" rock, same goes for UNITE, evolution, STEP you, free&asy and also evolution IMO (the beat always makes me think of drumnbase og jungle like stuff lol) etc...Think about the music that real rock bands make, take f.ex l'arc en ciel, which of ayu's songs could they've done unaltered?

I feel that on albums like I am... and MY STORY which people tend to describe as "rock" or at least rock inspired, I think it's because there's a darker feel to the album or because there are more elements from rock overall without it's making many of the songs in particular within the genre.

I'd love to hear HANABI chicks opinion on this though! :yes

SunshineSlayer 21st June 2006 11:41 AM

How is is this LOVE? even questionable? It's easily one of her most rock songs, almost metal even.

And L'arc could perform every one of those songs unaltered - l'arc plays extremely diversified rock music.

Me? I don't know too much about music genres, so when people like you or sxesven say that you don't see it as being rock like the kind that rock groups/singers have, I trust that and think of it as rock/pop mix, because Ayu is a pop singer. I don't listen to artists that are classified as rock much, so I don't know what the difference is, and I usually trust those that know more about it. I usually refer to Ayu's songs as rock-type songs. It's all probably down to personal views though, because I've read here where people say songs like Startin' and INSPIRE are rockish, but to me they sound more like most pop tracks I've heard from 50s/60s to the present. Some like UNITE! have such a strong mix of styles, I don't know what I should call them. I agree with your list as sounding more like rock/pop to me.

That's ok. :) I don't see how something like Ready Steady Go though is any less poppy than something like Step YOU.

What makes me not classify STEP you as rock, is partly the streamlined feel of the song and the fact that the arrangements aren't that edgy, there's mostly clearly synth sounds. I feel like it falls into the same category as ladies night (original version).

The fact that the verses are sung in a very 'cute' voice brings me to say STEP you isn't a rock song.

pop/rock maybe though :)

I listened almost only to metal before I got into Ayu, to me is this LOVE? is very much metal, but IMO genres are decided from person to person.

I find many of the sounds in STEP you remind me of rock-ish-ness, especially the drum beat. It's very light thought.

spacelion 21st June 2006 06:17 PM

What about WE WISH? It's kinda rock-ish.

alternarist 21st June 2006 06:31 PM

how about No way to say? Rock ballad?
