Why this size?
I never understood why ayu released her old singles in that rectangular size :S does it was only in japan? :rolleyes
|
It was a standard in Japan to do singles like that..
I guess they switched to all 12cm/8" discs later because of all the content you could put on them~ [4 was the max or something on 8cm discs.. on a CD its like 17-18 ;D] |
I have many 8cms singles, yeah I think its a particular thing of Japan 'cause everyone who see them always ask me where I got that strange cds and where I can play them lol
|
Aren't they cheaper as well, I mean not only can you fit less songs but they use less plastic (and probably had crummy quality?).
|
Yeah, they were cheaper D:
It's probably 2x as much to do the kind of singles we get nowadays.. |
too bad they don't have those now. they look cuter to me
|
^ yea i like them too...plus, the covers would look sorta better on 8cm single cases
|
I think they look cuter too, luckily most of my singles are that format lol
|
I only had one music CD like that in my hands... they do make 8cm CDR discs though, and 8cm DVD-/+R discs too.
I guess they used smaller CDs becouse they didn't need to put more on the CD than just the 4 tracks. When people started adding remixes they simply switched to bigger discs. |
I dunno why so, but it's kinda unpretty packaging, IMO :D
|
I like the sort of panoramic view. Vertically, you can do a full body shot, and horizontally, you can show a buncha scenery. The For My Dear... cover is appealing to me because it's panoramic. It's like...extra special widescreen version...lol.

The 3-inch CD single WAS the standard for CD singles in japan for a looonngg time. In 1999 however, just as companies were deciding that maybe they should be brought to the states & europe (back when singles were still sold regularly in the US... who remembers that? :P), Sony killed the format worldwide, citing that it would be too expensive to make ALL cd players compatible with the 3" format. Most cd players & drives will let you play them... the only ones that don't (as far as I know offhand) are older standalone CD players (like home stereo sized ones that only play CDs and nothing else), many car stereos, CD changers, and the iMac cd drive.
Now that DVD players, CD drives, and portable MP3/CD players are the most common ways to listen to CDs (all of which are compatible with the 3" format), Sony are probably kicking themselves for killing off a format that would be saving record labels lots of money (seeing as how they're still very frequently only putting between 1 and 4 tracks on CD singles). |
^ I've learned something new today :P
They have 3" CD-Rs and such now too right? Because my friend used a few of those for burning some pictures onto them....I find 3" CDs kind of cute actually. :P |
Yea i like how they look too...too bad they only hold like 180megs...
|
thanks! (i would love to have WHATEVER in my hands, it's was so adorable *_*)
|
Ah! I'm getting whatever very soon...and TO BE if I'm really lucky. Out of the 6, love~destiny~ is my fav song, but I think Depend on You and You have the best covers.
|
i like the Depend on You and YOU covers the most too, i also like the cover for Trust but i hate how they put the text right in the middle of her face
|
I think design-wise, WHATEVER and For My Dear... are my favorites.
Oh, a quick note is that TO BE is still not sold out yet at alot of CD stores. It's the most common of the 8 singles. |
Yep :) still on sale at amazon japan...but I'm waiting for it to get shipping around cause they said 8-10 days then they delayed a week or two...this really sucks cause I was supposed to ship to a friend who's visiting Japan, and she's coming home soon...which means I'll have to change the address to my home address here in the US...which doubles the cost cause of shipping. Not to mention the time...
