[article] Utada Hikaru Is a Tetris Champion

Quote:

Utada Hikaru is a Japanese pop star that is known in the rest of the world for her contribution brought to the Kingdom Hearts franchise sound track. Now, the singer vanquished 26 from 30 Tetris opponents in a Nintendo-sponsored event that took place in the weekend in Japan.

On Saturday, Nintendo hosted an event called The Tetris Battle at the Tokyo International Forum. The Tetris lovers had to challenge the pop star in a round of Tetris DS.

The j-pop singer is a self-proclaimed Tetris fan since she was 5 years old. In the competition she lost the first two games, but she got back on track winning 26 of her next 28 opponents. More, she defeated one of the Nintendo developers. Utada blamed the unfamiliar Nintendo DS system she used at the event for her lost rounds.

Utada did not do her first game song for Kingdom Hearts. She is the one who sang "Easy Breezy" for the first Nintendo DS advertising campaign in Japan. She also sang the theme songs for Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II, "Simple and Clean" and "Passion" respectively.

Yeah, if you followed her blog, you can see how freakily obsessed she is with Tetris until she had the score at straight 9's.

Great to know she's winning the competition. Such a shame Ayu isn't in it... Maybe Utada might make a song about Tetris soon, I really hope so.

She probably will.

She's doing one about Kumachang, why not Tetris? And why not that jar of sand from the Sahara? D:

Yeah, she was really deflated after the first two matches too. Good thing she came back to win almost everything else.

She could probably make the Tetris song complete with the Tetris theme as backing music. Or even write lyrics and singing the theme.

^She might as well.

Nice to know that Utada is a fan of one of my favorite games.

She's got taste in games. =D

By the way, wasn't this an old news xD

And did anyone watched the competition on YouTube? xD
It was quite hillarious! xD Watching as Utada keep smiling during the games and her opponents was like "zomg wat to do next".

Japanese pop songstress Hikaru Utada, who speaks mean English and whose latest album Ultra Blue is somewhat lackluster, has just posted on her blog that after 16 hours of continuous Tetris DS play, she has achieved a score of 99999999 points. This is astonishing for three reasons: One, in the Japanese game community it's being treated as huge news; two, that a major pop star can find "enough time to beat an RPG", as she puts it, to reach the maximum score in Tetris DS; and three, the fact that it's a slow enough news day that we posted it.

Not exactly, the "Hikki challenge" happened only a few days back. It was part of Nintendo's campaign to promote the DS.

By the way, hikki.blogspot.com has translations of the blog entry about the challenge up already.

It's cool how hikki is good with tetris but she should try some other simple and thought provoking games like Hexic (which was made by the Tetrist creator btw) or Geometry Wars. Or maybe she should get into an actual game like BF 2 and I would be so turned on if she became a top 10 player. lol

seki_kun 25th August 2006 04:46 AM

I wonder how she'll do in Puzzle Bobble? I used to be crazy over that game a few years back.
