How much do people in your country spend on music per person?

There's a chart at The Economist that shows spending per person in the top 20 biggest music markets for the first half of 2006.

The UK is number one, followed by Japan, Norway, and the USA.

No wonder Japan is up there, considering the prices on their CDs.

I suspected Sweden to be somewhere around where it was placed. I believe it is much lower now than it was only a few years ago. Piracy really had a breakthrough here.

Thanks for this chart.

immel: That happened all over the globe, it would just show that people in sweden uses that more than else I guess?

Norway is on the top twenty of the WORLDS BIGGEST MUSIC MARKETS!? O.o Bigger market than China!?!? I just can't believe. Of course, almost every market is increasing here, every year, allthough CD SALES have gone down in total the CDs sold by norwegian musicians is still increasing. So I guess population taken into consideration every market will be big compared to other countries.

The prices on CDs used to be about Japan level here, like 4-5 years ago, but now it's lower.

But since this music spending, I guess it's not just CD sales.

Because of piracy/downloads etc, yeah, even Norway is a bigger market than China.

But when you think about, China's potential market is HUUGE. Even if only 1 in 10 people bought a cd in China, it'd still surpass Japan's entire population buying a cd. Some record company needs to seriously crack the market and get super RICH.

I'm not at all surprised that Japan is up there. I only bought one new CD when I went there, and the rest I bought used because they're just so expensive. But in the US, CDs tend to range from about $10 (on the week that they come out) to $20 at higher-priced music stores such as FYE. I'd say the average price is about $14 though.
