New I-pod

I won an I-pod and as the package says "1GB - 240 songs" but it can only hold 130 songs and uses only 900MB space....why is that so...its my first i-pod....

micster 2nd April 2007 05:22 PM

Ouch a 1gb ipod

well usb drives have to use so much on firmware for the hardware. And if you are having long tracks or high bitrate ones then the space will be used up more so less songs.

thinkingoutloud89 2nd April 2007 05:50 PM

but why does he give me just 900Mb space isnted of 1GB...thats a lot !

micster 2nd April 2007 05:52 PM

100mb is used up on the firmware im guessin. I mean ipods are very stylish with there menu systems so im guessing thats why

thinkingoutloud89 2nd April 2007 06:00 PM

wow...but 100MB is much...anyways thank ya^^

Most memory is like that. It's like my memory stick showing 3.75gb instead of 4. It comes down to the individual product, apparently a lot of the first Nano's had less space then advertised where some did offer pretty much what Apple claimed. Firmware has something to do with it as well though, try and use the "Restore" option in iTunes and see if it makes a difference.

Yeah, itunes actually says altogether there is about 28 gigs on my ipod .. it says 30 on the back XD

but yeah, there are over 400 pictures saved to an ipod [mine at least] once you get it

xiaou-xijiang 5th April 2007 12:11 AM

that happens with every ipod. My 30 gig holds about 27 gigs. some of the space is used for the firm ware as micster said. Since mine is video it takes up a lot more than 100 mb because it needs that memory to support all the features.

the same is true for yours.

mishidabo 5th April 2007 12:22 AM

yeah just dont get yourself overworked with this, this happends with everything..mine is 80gb but it doesnt have 80gb of free disk space

I also have the 80GB iPod Video and I get about 75.40GB so I lose 4.60GB. Ill tell you all why u lose space on ya HDD or Flash Drive or w.e its because the way a computer reads the Bytes on the HDD, its a little hard to explain but yeah thats a fact and its the same with ordinary HDDs as well :)

PS: It has nuthin to do with the Apple Firmware (because the firmware is less than 10-15MB on its own) :D
